The News Editor of the state-owed radio station, DBS, Curtis Matthew, is among Dominicans who will be awarded this year for service to country.
Prime Minister Skerrit, at the start of an interview with Matthew on DBS Thursday morning, revealed that the veteran news reporter would be receiving a national award for his “exemplary service to country”.
“The Cabinet would have taken a decision to advise His Excellency the President to bestow upon you the Meritorious Service Award for outstanding service to the country. You have been exceptional and I want to be the first to congratulate you,” Skerrit said.
Matthew has been employed at DBS for the past 32 years. He started off as a sports reporter, moved to news some years later and has been the radio station’s News Editor for the past 18 years.
Matthew’s journalism career is characterized by commitment, hard work and a certain doggedness in his reporting style that causes him to stand out among his peers.
Dominica News Online congratulates Curtis Matthew on having being selected for this national award.
Hey Curtis, I just realise this put you on the same level as whiny Parry Bellot. Really Curtis, this is more like a slap in the face with a wet fish than an honorary award. Sorry man.
PC rime Minister Skerrit,
At the start of an interview with Matthew alias Little Sally Walker on DBS Thursday morning, revealed that the veteran news reporter would be receiving a national award for his “exemplary Kissing it service to Me & my Cabal”. over the last 14 years.
Mr. Matthew is very much undeserving of any national award for journalism. It’s not the longevity in the business that counts but the quality of your work. A good journalist must ask the hard and probing questions to get information, especially when the government activities (the people’s business) are mostly shrouded in secrecy. This particular news person asks the supreme leader and his incoherent disciples cotton candy questions. The opposition members are painted in a dim light.
This is exactly why the country is in this untended state of bad roads, crumbling bridges, mole infested public buildings, shabby health services and profound economic decay. The government places its loyal party enablers in key positions throughout the civil service and strategic positions
Awards given by government that should mean something are now tainted with bias and suspicion.
Emo news has done more to give a real picture of dominica than this guy
I wish I could honestly say this award is well deserved. But when I put this accolade in the context of whose decision it is to confer it, I can’t help but make the following assessment: A good journalist asks the “tough” questions of whomever he/she is interviewing, in an effort to get at the truth, and in the interest of disseminating proper information to the public. If you seek to tear down and embarrass who you don’t like and “go easy on”, shield and glorify those whom you favour, in my view you are not a good journalist.
DNO, can you please apprise me why my innocuous comments have not been published? The media should serve as a watchdog over the government and politics. The government-control news entities and many other ‘locally independent’ media houses are being used as a cover up for the current administration’s fallacies in public life.
Are you succumbing, like many other media houses have done, to the government’s allurement and pressure to publish things that are only favorable to them? Have you lost your independence? Do you still pride yourself on publishing the news and comments without fear or favor? I just hoping that you will remain nonpartisan and you cannot be bought or intimidated.
Wish that you will always present the unpolished truth, favoring no sides.
If you are fiercely independent as you have claimed to be, publish my previous comments, they are innocuous.
ADMIN: We will continue to publish stories and comments without fear or favour of the government, the opposition or the commentors themselves. Happy Independence.
Thank you DNO for your reassuring words. Now, publish my first commentary. I put in some effort and it’s instructive and edifying. It’s just critically positive.
ADMIN: Which commentary? If you still don’t see it you can try resubmitting it.
This is what happens to you when you associated yourself blindly with failed inept Skerrit.
“When have u heard him ask a tough question to any minister of govt….”
“another lick bottom African..”
“…and yet another one of the cabal is rewarded for singing for his supper!”
“So Skerrit is honouring his Public Relations team with “National Awards”
I`m sorry for Curtis reducing himself as this journalist all in favour of Skerrit. Following the news there seems to be no challenging questions to account for this and that, which has been questionable for years that our people asks. Curtis to me, has not been investigative enough of Skerrit to us. Just like Hon Linton did as a journalist who research, investigated the Bin and Fertilizer Bobol without fear, friends or favour. Curtis please elevate yourself to this level and not down to that poor level of Skerrit where sadly some see you as this boy with a fear of Skerrit then you have not at least receive that “Honour?”
Skerrit…
Whilst I congratulate Curtis Matthew for his award, it sends the signal that this award is ight weight . For someone who has been in the profession for such a long time, Curtis failed to bring objectivity to the news and information business he is in. With so many issues happening in the country over the recent past, this senior journalist failed to ask many important questions on behalf of those who look to the profession, whose business is to shine light on important national and international issues affecting the daily lives of citizens. In the recent past he forgot that his profession has been given constitutional protection. At least he earned his paycheck and now an award but the public lost the independence of the media. All he had to do was ask questions on our behalf.
So Skerritt is honoring his Public Relations team with “National Awards”
DBS has replaced GIS, that’s why.
No surprise..Just now Skerrit will bestow upon him an honorory Doctorate for his Skerrit type of journalism..Only in Dominica!!!!
Skerrit Must Go
Skerrit Must Go
LAZY Skerrit Must Go Now
Curtis, congratulations man but I have ver mixed feeling about that. It tainted by you never challenging government and Skerrit. I know you have to make a living but I cannot give you much respect for that brother though basically I do think you are a decent man.
…and yet another one of the cabal is rewarded for singing for his supper!
Serious question, I’ve been seeing the word “cabal” used a lot on DNO lately. Did someone use it in a speech or something?
I know what the word means of course, I’m just curious about it’s sudden popularity in Dominicans’ vocab
If you know what it means you will know that perhaps it is very appropriate.
Yes, it’s being used as much as resilient, resilience, resiliency…all from the same speech
another lick bottom african
When have u heard him ask a tough question to any minister of govt..
Curtis is a good man, with great opportunities ahead of him. Well respected, the sad thing is he does not present himself as this journalist, and this is sad. It appears Skerrit (Scare-it) and his government has strong hold over DBS, its staff and Board of Directors. So, Curtis appears to be in the wrong camp. Listen to the BBC, UK State owned and listen carefully to the journalist who scrutinise and pepper the Prime Mininister, anyone and government Ministers on matters of Sate affairs. The Prime Minister of UK and Ministers etc must present and make themselves available as they are servants of the country. They need to know who is doing what and where. In Domininca it appears that DBS is solely owned and run by this Skerrit and his failed useless Cabinet. DBS seems absolutely own by the Government and the Corrupt failed Labour Party. A set of bad bedfellows. Bad company, failed in execution of duties.
Curtis, please take note, you have years ahead. Start thinking of your future.
Congratulation Sir, well deserved.
