KEK celebrates 40th anniversary

Konmité pou Etid Kwéyòl (KEK) started celebrating its 40th anniversary on June 1, 2021. Several activities will be held held over the next several months to mark this milestone.

These include the launch of a KEK page on Facebook and various media programmes and features in June, a panel discussion on the history and work of KEK in July, a fashion event in August, a special KEK commemorative magazine and a Kwéyòl Choral Speech competition in October and a Swaré Kwéyòl in November at which several Kwéyòl stalwarts will be recognized. In addition several video features on the work of KEK will be released.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, KEK wishes to pay tribute to founding members who have passed on – Anita James, Marcel Djamala Fontaine and Felix Henderson – for their tremendous contribution towards the development of Kwéyòl. KEK also extends gratitude to Alwin Bully, under whose guidance as Chief Cultural Officer, KEK was established on June 1st 1981 and to Raymond Lawrence Chief Cultural Officer and member of KEK for his guidance
and support during the past three decades. KEK recognizes and pays gratitude its founding members and its newer members – who all continue to work diligently in promoting Kwéyòl in Dominica today.

KEK also recognizes and thanks the numerous cultural groups, musicians, writers, storytellers and poets, institutions and persons in the public and private sector for their contribution to the preservation, promotion and development of the Kwéyòl language and culture. KEK acknowledges Radio DBS for its pioneering work in Kwéyòl and the media, its signature programme Espewyans Kwéyòl and its more recent initiatives and commitments. KEK also salutes its many regional and international partners, friends and colleagues in the Creole community of nations (Bann Zil Kwéyòl) for their assistance and solidarity in the forty-year journey. Finally, KEK pays homage to Mabel “Cissie” Caudeiron and Edward Oliver LeBlanc who laid the foundations for the creole renaissance during the 1960s and beyond.

In recognition of its contribution to the development of Kwéyòl, KEK was awarded the E.O.LeBlanc Trophy.
