Riding on the accomplishment of have already won eight crowns, Dice, according to reports, brought his invincible “A” game to the calypso finals on Saturday night (March 2).
The other contenders of the evening were left to battle for the other three positions in the top four.
2018 monarch Bobb, in the judges’ collective opinion, did not do enough to retain his crown. He placed second (1st runner up).
Tsaha P, Dominica’s first and only female monarch in the national competition thus far, gave powerful renditions in both rounds to earn the judges’ approval for the 2nd runner up position (3rd place) and Web who has impressed throughout the season, clinched 4th place.
Dice accepted sponorship/assistance fro a few business including Astaphans and ACS. Isn’t the owners stalwarts of Labour? Isnt that what he calls Jumbie Money? Astaphans is Tony Astaphans and ACS Is Timothy. People be real it is calyspos and you cant use the crowd enjoyment of Dices performance as a basis of people who want change. So many persons who i know including myself danced to that song and are certainly not UWPites.

Dice was singing calypso and has won 9 times. That is a great achievement by a Dominican that deserve world wide recognition. That is success to be proud of. That is Calypso. What surprised me most is how well ‘ Jumble Money’ touched the heartstrings of the people. It clearly indicates that the masses are saturated with frustration and are yearning for something or someone to alleviate this pent up discontentment and exasperation. The messenger delivered an unequivocal message, Dominicans are not going to be bribed with no ‘jumble’ money, party, alcohol this time around.

So sad to see a man with such talent unable to produce not one regional hit. Somebody is using the poor guy for their own selfish political reasons but he doesn’t realized that his career can’t go beyond the shores of Dominica.
He’s competing for the local crown so it’s understandable that he keeps his focus on national issues. If he really wants to venture further afield, I guess he will compose songs for that purpose. This is an opportune moment to celebrate the man’s unprecedented accomplishment, not a time to go fault finding. Be happy when ordinary people work hard and succeed. There is absolutely no need to agonize over honest accomplishments. More power to Dice for winning the calypso monarchy for an unprecedented nine (9) times.

There are over 20 other calypsonians and each one will decide and choose their theme and topic, focus for calypso based on the situation in Domininca, it`s called social commentary. Some of the songs are payed outside and also , we d not hear or have listened to calypso songs from other islands, apart for Trinindad. OMG did you see when Dice was singing how the large crowd was reacting? It seemed like it was a UWP convention- much better than the one in Londonderry last week. The only difference is that people paid their own $$$$ to get it and bought her own drinks as compared to the Jumbie $$$ which provided transportation and bought food, drinks and everything else for those who went to the comedy show in Londonderry. So the election date has just been pushed back again after Dice won the crown.

I totally agree with you have to “out-Dice Dice” to win. Simply put, Dice is the nine-time Monarch, a record which seems to be unequaled across the region where this wonderful art form is practiced. Giving the edge to Dice may not necessarily be a nefarious act on the part of the judges who are tasked with the challenging job of choosing the winner. After taking in last night’s competition via an online medium, I felt that four competitors, including Dice, stood a good chance of hoisting the trophy. The contest sounded so close that I would not have had a problem if any of the other three calypsonians had been crowned the winner. Not knowing Dice’s age, I can only assume that he is a relatively young man who still has a good upside in which his “creative fire is stiil burining hot”. This means the challengers to the throne will have to continue to raise their artistic game in order to unseat King Dice. I truly believe that this stiff competition bodes well for state of Calypso in DA.
Dice was just special. Both songs were fantastic and could cause tears to run down the eyes of the hardest man. His 2nd song about Jumbee money? OMG, if I were a pastor, a priest, the Bishop, Evangelist or even the President, I would call PM Skerrit last night and ask him to declare today a National Day REPENTANCE, so that everyone could take time to examine their heart to see what role they played in allowing “Jumbee money” to be the main stay of our economy today. I remember when I was growing up my parents warned me so much about Jumbee money and told me when Satan gives he wants something in return. He was just spectacular that I had not seen anything like that through out my many years of going to the Calypso final. I am a strong supporter of Checking but after Dice sang came in the first round I honestly said it was over, even if Dice blundered in the 2nd round, only to find out that his second one was even stronger

Are you suggesting the censorship of calypso as was done during British rule? It’s obvious that you are not familiar with the history of calypso music. Even with this censorship during British rule, calypsos continued to push boundaries of free speech. Calypso is one of the most powerful art forms and must be given greater respect in our society, not censorship.

Calypso is supposed to be a true reflection of what goes on in the society. It’s social and political commentary. The winds of change are blowing and ruffling plenty feathers. The majority of people are hungering for a fresh beginning. They want the antiquated politics of division, blatant victimization, confrontation and corruption be gone.
So he should have sung “Captain the Ship is Sinking”, or the one by Mighty Sparrow “Good Citizen””!

However, the Healer and Tasha P gave solid performances in the first round and Dice capture the crown with a masterful performance in the second and rightfully deserve the monarch.
That is not a fault. Politics is in the air on the world stage. So this person has no idea of what is going on in the world. Dominica has a lot of entertainment potential. We should be looking at the next level, the professional level where entertainers can making a living with their talent. Where are our promoters and managers.

Dice has basically redefined the genre to his style. It is popular and the judges have (maybe inadvertently) bent the criteria to fit. A Dice calypso is now the de facto standard of excellence for calypso m Waitukubuli. What that means is that for anyone else to win while he is competing .. you have to ‘out-Dice’ Dice . I am not sure that is what the Association our the calypso ‘industry’ needed or wanted… but that is what it is.
