Labour Party brought in to rescue things – PM Skerrit on Antigua & Barbuda election

ABLP leader, Gaston Browne wins election 14 - 3.
ABLP leader, Gaston Browne wins election 14 – 3.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has congratulated Prime Minister elect of the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) Gaston Browne stating that it is clear that when things get difficult in the region the electorate look to the Labor Party movement to “rescue things.”

Browne emerged victorious on Thursday when Antiguans took to the polls, removing Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of the United Progressive Party (UPP) from office. Browne won the polls with a landslide victory earning 14 seats to Spencer’s 3.

Speaking to state-owned DBS radio on Friday morning, the Prime Minister Skerrit noted that he will continue to work with Browne. “I wish to congratulate comrade Gaston Browne on his victory, I wish him well…we will continue to work together; I worked very well with him while he was in opposition and I have no doubt that I will work well with him when he is in government.”

According to him the win was expected based on a CADRES poll conducted. “It is clear that the election results in the region show that when things get difficult and challenging, that the electorates of the region look to the Labor Party and the Labor movement to rescue things. The government was experiencing some economic and fiscal challenges and the people felt they needed to bring back Labor to help rescue things because clearly one would understand and appreciate that the economic situation in Antigua deteriorated to an extent and people felt that they needed Labor.”

The Prime Minister encouraged Brown to focus on the challenges in Antigua since as a new Prime Minister he has a tremendous task ahead of him. “As a new prime minister, first of all there are some real challenges in Antigua that he would have to focus on and of course, on a regional side you have a number of the regional integration movements in terms of the economic union and the unfolding of the various elements of the OECS Economic Union, so he is going to have to pay some attention to this.”

Meanwhile, speaking to the Antiguan media, outgoing Prime Minister of Antigua Baldwin Spencer wished the new government well. “The electorates of this country have made a statement. The verdict of the people of Antigua and Barbuda is one which says that they are willing (to have) the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party governing this country at this time.” According to Spencer, he had already spoken to the Labor Party leader Gaston Browne to concede that the trends showed that his party was destined to win control of the country.

If a man is offering freebs, then we go for it! Why do we have a problem contributing to nation building? Freebs and bribes cannot run a country, it is a short term fix, we should look at long term fixes and get away from the instant satisfaction! The AlP promised the immediate repelling of the PIT as soon as they get into office, am still awaiting for the promise to be fulfilled! Please tell me what does the word immediate mean? Folks be pragmatic and realistic when you go to the poles in DA as oppose to the folks in Antigua that voted for an economic plan that has failed in the pass! there is nothing wrong with electoral reform, as it is for the good of the country democratic system! The ALP and DLP have one thing in common, they are innately corrupt and corruption is never good for any country, rather vote for the administration that will best run your country and keep it scandal free!

It is very easy to see who supports DLP and who supports UWP. Nothing DLP supporters state is pleasing to them.
UWP supporters are the worst set of people, critical, vindictive, troublemakers, creating division and disunity in the land. You are not correct, you know. You turn people off voting for UWP.

    June 16, 2014

Boy my people are not easy. How easy we forget. In 1995 the Freedom Party was voted out by the United Workers Party and the following years was bare fiasco for the people of Dominica. These guys could not and did not have the “testicular fortitude” to run a country. So we ended up with:
Civil Servants Salary being paid by the 10th & 15th of the following month.
Government borrowing at commercial interest rates – 13.5%??
Force a Netball court at commercial rates – now standing dilapidated – what a waste of money
Dismantle the DBGA just to spite Scotland and drive bananas to the ground
Sell DOMLEC to a foreign company so that the UWP Govt. could pay civil servants salaries – note that the electricity company of every Caribbean country is state owned. Numerous power outages followed
    Frequent water outages
    Roads in a poor state
A 3% sales tax that was not managed
And then came 2000 and they lost the election, UWP still owing Earl Williams 6 months salaries
During their term of terror Dominica UWP racked up massive public debt – according to IMP the public debt doubled between 1997 – 2000. Dominica could not meet its external financial obligations, and so external financial support stopped. And the economy continued to decline until the LABOUR administration started to clean up the mess/damage/disaster that Hurricane UWP left behind. The job of cleaning up the mess killed 2 Prime Ministers. We became the laughingstock of the Caribbean and the wider world, being led by an “unnamed farmer” who though he was up to the task but failed miserably.
A 4% stabilization levy was implemented to help stabilize the country, plus the govt had to increase the sales tax to 5%. According to IMF growth in Dominica started to pick up somewhere around 2004 under the LABOUR administration!
And now other Caribbean countries are looking up to Dominica and now you say change is a must? Change to pre 2000? Skerritt is the only PM that has the “testicular fortitude” to implement the much need rehabilitation and infrastructural works in Dominica. Yes LABOUR care!!! just look at the YES WE CARE program, Universal Secondary education, a cadre of well trained, highly motivated workers, a better and much more efficient Medical Health System, expanded energy production and the list goes on. Show me what was UWP did for Dominica between 1995 -2000/Jan. LABOUR dared to go where no prior Government had the guts to go. DOMINICANS I still remember, and I am sure that most of you do, but for whatever reason we want to regress. Be smart my people. LABOUR POWER ALL THE WAY COME NEXT GENERAL ELECTIONS!!!!!

If Skerrit thinks that people on Dominica are happy with his performance then why is he still trying so much to recruit Dominicans overseas?

  16. Cerberus
    June 15, 2014

I do hope that mr. Skerrit’s message that the people of Antigua turned to their Labour party for succour is not an advertisement for the performance his party of the same name that controls Dominica’s Govt. I do hope he does not see himself as an example for others in the region to follow because that would belie the economic facts. Let’s examine a few salient performance indicators of the of the economy of Dominica, in comparison with Antigua.
Antigua has a population of 89,000 against, Dominica 72,000:

GDP: Antigua U.S.$.1.76 billion, Dominica U.S.$. 497 million
GDP growth rate: Antigua1.6%, Dominica 0.4%
unemployment (15-24 yr. old): Antigua 19.9%, Dominica 26%
    Budget
    revenue: Antigua U.S.$.229.5 million,Dominica U.S.$148.1million
Taxes revenue: Antigua 19.5% of GDP, Dominica 29.8% of GDP
    (all figures for 2012)
To this we can add other factors such as the abysmal performance of Dominica in attracting foreign investment compared with Antigua and the fact that whereas Antigua also has its economic citizenship programme their citizens do not require visas for either Canada or the the Schengen countries of the E.U.

There is little that Antigua can learn from Dominica. In my opinion the people of Antigua have chosen for Change and the only thing the Labour party in Antigua and that of Mr. Skerrit have in common is a name.

It is about time Dominicans realize the Skeritt led administration is not an economically-minded Government. It is a proven infrastructural Government. In order words, the Minister of Finance does not understand how the economy of a country works. He believes the building of bridges, repairing of schools, roads, houses for the less fortunate and hand outs are what it take to drive an economy.

Please take this result as an indication that Dominica needs a change of government.

I am confident that our current government have tried to serve us to the best of their collective ability; however we need to consider introducing a fresher perspective. So please, I urge you to make the right choice when you go you go to the polling booth.

It is very interesting that the economy of Antigua is doing much better than that of Dominica, yet you have Skerrit and Astaphan admitting that the Antiguans voted for ALP based on the poor performance of the Antiguan economy. The message is therefore clear, under the watch of DLP Dominica has become the worst performing economy in the region. Even St. Kitts with a much smaller population, is doing much better than us. One of the main concerns of Gaston Browne and the ALP was the inability of the UPP governmenr to attract significant foreign investments. Recent reports reveal Dominica to be in last place in attacting foreign investments. So if Antigua like every other island in the region are doing better than us in all areas of economic development, and these islands are voting for change to further improve their respective economies, the question is, under the circumstances what must Dominicans do? Are we going to continue to wallow in economic dispair and mendicancy or are we going to vote for positive change? I SAY CHANGE IS A MUST AND NOT AN OPTION.

  23. June 14, 2014

It is NOT the PARTY that won the election, it is the PERSON LEADING THE PARTY. Antigua and Barbuda responded to a CHANGE.

Mr Skerrit I think you have not fully understood what happened in Antigua. Antiguans asked for change against corruption, economic wealth of Politicians, unemployment and economic instability. Are you not seeing the CHANGE right in your face? How long are Dominicans going to sit and see Chineese engaged on all our projects while we sit by and Look?
How long will dominicans sit and ministers becoming richer while the masses get poorer?
How long will Dominicans sit and not see justice in the G.O.N case simply because a few might go down to?
How long will small business people sit back and see Chineese taking over Roseau and their Government cannot lend a support?
How long will Dominicans understand that if Ambrose George was so clean ,which we know he is not , two prime ministers would not fire him? Wake up Roseau South!
How long will Dominicans continue to allow these politicians take them for fools, We heard of Bin and Fertilizer Bobol,Villas, French passports, are we going to continue to sit back?
Also how can we ingest that a man who was just a minister a few days ago is now president and we still expect him to be neutral, is that democracy?
Why are we not able to clean the voters list like Antigua, how long will that take?
Finally Change is there- I can feel it!!!!

You got it wrong and that’s what Dominica will do too. change the govt, it’s time for change. Antiguans gave Spencer govt several chances just like Dominica gave you several chances. Things are not getting better because you guys have become complacent and have taken advantage of the positions. You have abused the system and now it’s time to change. So stop holding up the election, clean up the list and stop importing voters and see what will happens . Stop holding the country hostage, stop, being so scared of losing, if you are doing a great job then you should have nothing to fear. You would not have to buy votes in secrets. You know know you are scared, you know it is Impossible for you to win without cheating because Dominicans have already decided and you are playing games and buying time to cheat once again. How long do you think that the heavenly father is going to allow you to keep his children in shackles with you red clinic while you fatten your purse. Enough is enough, people are frustrated, it is time for a change. Just as how God gave Moses the power to part the red sea to lead his children from captivity, God will make a way for Dominicans to break free from your shackels. Remember the ABLP was in the opposition, the UPP was not doing too badly but a change was needed and the people effected that change; be on guard Mr. PM, we are coming to effect that same change in Dominica. But remember the old saying that “love is blind” and that is no excuse for indulging your lover’s behavior and ending up with a battered-wife syndrome. If you want that for yourself that is fine but don’t insist on imposing your lover’s whims and fancies onto others.

Under no circumstance can Skerro and his DLP win the next General Election if we have Free and Fair Elections with a clean Voters list and Voter ID Cards. Skerrit knows this to be true , that is why he is determined to bribe Dominicans living overseas and other people to come to Dominica to vote for him. Enough of you Skerro , just like the UPP in Antigua you have made our people Beggars and our beautiful island the poorest island in the Caribbean. Change is now a must and not an option. Congratulations to Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party. All the best to you Antigua PM who will now lead the people of Antigua. I noted your happy smile. You have every reason to look the picture of jubilation. May God be with you.
Prime Minister Skerrit had every right to congratulate him. From one PM to another, it is protocol and a mark of friendship. The people wanted the Labor Party and they got their elected wishes.
I know some Antiguans, the type of people they are, I know they would vote for the Labor Party. I must telephone one of my Antiguan friends in Ontario about this. I have no doubt this friend is satisfied with the outcome of the Antigua election.
To those whom I know who reside in A/gua, I have no idea if you access DNO. Nevertheless I am sending my best wishes to you that Antigua will be well-governed by the elected PM and his Party members that, under his leadership, all your wishes for Antigua will be fulfilled or at least most of them.
I visualize it is not an easy matter being a leader of a country especially in this era. Times are not what they used to be as in previous years. The world is changing and with every generation people are constantly changing including demanding of their government. The latter is not always fair to the government.
God bless everyone of you and that you will cooperate with your government to make Antigua a better, happier and safe place to live! Hope to visit again sometime.

    June 13, 2014

By the way Mr prime minister, did you follow the process? It was mostly about cleaning the voters list, providing voter identification cards, under the supervision of an independent electoral commission, operating without direction, interference, and/or hindrance from anyone, whether it was the PM ministers, or agents, and operatives of the government or the party.
If you are so confident that you are going to win the election whenever you choose to call it, or whether it calls itself, then ensuring that the voters list be cleansed, and that voter ID cards be provided, should be your priority.
You should also not be afraid to debate the issues publicly. You owe that to yourself, but moreso to the people of Dominica.

The same malaise which plagued the Baldwin Spencer administration in Antigua, is what we have presently on island: High unemployment, Low Foreign Direct Investment, and acvctivities which were not transparent. In Dominica the Labour Party was brought into office to DESTROYING THINGS . It is done by inept, incompetent, clueless, DUNCE and INSULTIVE LEADERS, who are obviously too GREEDY to think properly. Imagine a Minister Of Finance who has absolutely bo knowledge of any business subject, being the Finance Minister of a country! How can the economy move Forward? Imagine a government who came into office and met an international airport at its early stage of construction, and totally abandoned the idesa, only to come back later when OPPOSITION PRESSURE is make to bear on him, and an electiojn defeat is staring him in the face, to say yes we need one. The same goes for the WindsorPark stadium. The structure was bulldozed.

If you wish change, may it not be a hanger for your jacket and a noose around your neck. Think of the Europeans who trusted Hitler. He promised them better times. They voted for him and what they got for it was total harness and hardship and a mad and godless man who deprived them of their human rights. You should know the rest of this sad history.
Pray to God fervently with love in your heart and ask him to always give Dominica a worthy PM. Never wish for the worst or wish anyone bad for your prayers will not be answered. If they are, fortunate to be answered as you think, you may suffer for it.
I would not vote for a leader who is hoping to be elected, to be vindictive and cannot wait to get at the former PM. It depicts wickedness of heart. Who wants such a leader? Dominicans should fear such a person.
Fear the unknown to a certain degree for you cannot see the future nor can you foretell it. For the present you know what you have. Be satisfied and thank God. Keep this in mind.

It is always a wonderful thing to see people come together and speak with one voice. This victory by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour party is simply a message of change is a must. When things are not going well in a country the power of the people through ballot can speak volumes. It does not matter which political party is in power. All we can do now is wish the newly elected Government of Antigua well. The Dominican people should definitely take a page from what transpired in Antigua. If the party in power is not performing or unable to address the issues that are of concern to the electorate simply replace them. Change is change. It does not matter what party.

This man just wants to put a spin on things to fool Dominicans. This critical matter of electing a government is not based on a party but rather is based on the team of people with the better vision, the people who can best represent the issues of the Dominican people and the people who can bring development to its country and people. We had the DLP in government for fifteen years and the reality is this Skerrit led government has actually brought us to the lowest any country can become. We have all become poorer except him and his ministers. The prime minister has allegedly become the richest prime minister in the Eastern Caribbean during his reign as prime minister. What have we benefited? Yes, poverty. It is so sad. If this government had done well for Dominica, why are they buying voters and giving bribes to people to vote for them? Why are they not cleaning the voters list and why are they going overseas to bring in illegal voters, people who have been out of Dominica for over five years? Mr Prime Minister, you are just spinning things and hoping that Dominicans will be fooled by what you say. Antiguans wanted change and will not give a Government more than two terms in office. Yes, we want change, too, in Dominica. There are other gifted , intelligent and honest sons and daughters of the soil who must be given an opportunity to turn things around for us in Dominica. We need to be rescued from this DLP whose only concern is for themselves and their families. Dominica belongs to all of us, sir, and we need development. You had fifteen years and this is more than enough. You and the DLP have failed us. Papa Bon Dieu please deliver us.

  66. Aie Dominique
    June 13, 2014

You have this thing wrong Mr. Skerrit. The trend we are seeing is that of a wind of change blowing over the caribbean. It is the incumbent that is voted out and the opposition voted in. That’s what we saw in Grenada a year ago, that’s what we saw in Antigua yesterday and that’s what Peter Wickham indicated will happen in Dominica during his secret poll. I know you are trying to take as a moral victory but I know all no you KAKAing on you. Like Antigua last night, many of Spencer’s supporters who sang his song and shouted UPP up to the eve of elections voted him out the day of election. Our problem in Dominica is worse than that of Antigua and if Spencer’s supporters voted him out you should expect to be treated similarly by many of your supporters that just do not want to talk now, but will do their talking at the voting booths.

Antiguans wanted change. It isn’t party politics. The issues were debated and the people were fed up with that standstill almost backward economic development so the voted for change. Also they cleaned up their acts and got the electoral department in check….free and fair.

All the things you are doing to Dominicans and to Dominica you feel that you will win? You expect others to feel sorry for them? Do you know why they need money and for what? How many of them completed school, graduated in order to obtain a well-paying job? How many are educated? They want money they should do their utmost to seek employment.
Every country has poor people, many of whom did not apply themselves in school, were not interested in school and lived a leisure life.
Did the government place them in that situation? Today, they are blaming the government for their hardship and downfall. Do you know that everyone is responsible for him/her self and are obligated to fend for themseves? If they have done that and all else fails, then it will be understood that the government will come to their aid. They should first prove that they tried to obtain employment, to help themselves. This is the way I know it and most people know it.
What is wrong with those who refuse to even consider it but expect the government to give them money and all the time? In bygone years their ancestors never got financial help even though they were in need of. Today, some of them get help and they still lack appreciation. Ungrateful people.
