Antigua/Barbuda Labour Party wins general election

Gaston Browne led Antigua Barbuda Labour Party to landslide victory

The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), led by 47-year old Gaston Browne, will form the next government in that country after the general election held there yesterday.

The ABLP secured a landslide win over the United Progressive Party (UPP) that had served for two terms from 2004 to 2014 under Baldwin Spencer.
Preliminary results show a 14-3 win for the ABLP in a general election, reports state, was marred by allegations of vote buying and other irregularities by the UPP.
Incumbent Prime Minister Baldwin has conceded defeat.
Dominica News Online will bring the reactions of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and UWP leader Lennox Linton on the Antigua election results, later.

Possi in US chupzzzzzzzzzzz…what u know about UPP…Mr. Spencer and Mr. Linton are just the same…uneducated and full of empty promises.

They curse people left, right and center, call the elderly rag tag and greedy…turn their backs on the youth, call them prostitutes etc. they are very vicious, self centered, rude and don’t care leaders…I know so because I am a citizen of both…don’t even dare say I’m not a loyal citizen because you are in the US and just maybe holding a passport or hoping to do so sometime in the not too distant future.

Mr. Spencer proclaimed to the world that the Lester Bird gov’t was TAXING THE PEOPLE OUT OF EXISTENCE and how he would release them…the first thing he did as prime minister was to raise the tax to 15%…today one month electricity bill is $300+ dollars and if not paid on time its citizens will suffer the consequences of being without electricity and the list goes on and on…and you’re talking that crap to me, “mr. spencer you are a true man of the people and for the people of antigua /barbuda”. I BEG TO DIFFER! MR. SPENECR IS A WICKED MAN…I know so because I’ve lived there…walk the streets of Antigua and ask the people…trust me they don’t share your sentiment. chawwww! NEVER!

The winds of change are blowing through the Caribbean….People are no longer accepting corrupt and incompetent governments….it is as simple as that ….You don’t deliver …. you are kicked out. A country does not belong to politicians who think they have a right to remain in power whether or not they perform…DOMINICANS it is our turn next to kick out that lazy and incompetent government and elect the UWP….a party with a VISION…After 14 years SKerrit still do not know where he is heading LABOUR has FAILED…
    CHANGE IS A MUST…NOT AN OPTION…..

Personally, I believe this is a revelation of the hard fought works of Martin Luther King Jr and persons like Rosa Parks when they fought for people’s liberation. Democratic election of such magnitude demonstrates that the people of Antigua and Barbuda enjoy the power of the vote. Not just voting but a freedom to express their collective disagreement about things that are not fit and proper for the citizenry. It is definitely not turning to Labor for the answer but to tell the UPP, you are not making best use of the opportunity we the people gave to you, so your’e out.

I just can’t wait for Skerrit to declare the date for our ELECTION for the electorate to put his worries and troubles to rest. The massive ground swell for change is a worrying thing for him, but my advice is THE LONGER IT TAKES TO CALL THE ELECTION, THE MORE DAMAGE THAT IS CAUSED TO THE CORRUPT LABAR PARTY.
It’s amazing to see how rapidly a people can change. I sincerely hope that when LINTON AND UWP/TEAM DOMINICA assumes office, they don’t INSULT and deliberately IMPOVERISH the people like Labour Party has done.
    GOOD SIGNS ON THE GROUND
KEEP TIGHTENING THE NOOSE AROUND the neck of the corrupt Labour Party.
    HOW LONG?
I LOVE LINTON AS PM WE!
    NOT LONG!

I know it is a waste of time commenting on DNO now a days since they don’t seem too inclined to modify, but I will still share my opinion.
The result in Antigua is not good news for Skerrit and the DLP. I heard him this morning trying to take comfort from the ALP win, but I am quite sure in his heart of heart if UPP had won, he would have felt much better. After all, After all, he knows they are two different islands with different issues and many people I know that voted ABLP yesterday are rooting for UWP here. The message from this result is, the incumbent who had been in power for 10 yrs was voted out for the opposition. I bet you if UPP had won, Skerrit would say It is proof that the people have spoken and the people have said loudly that they have we cannot change an experience team for an inexperienced team. So yes, a win for the opposition in Antigua has Skerrit worried more.

Antiguans wanted change. This is what Dominicans must do. Don’t vote for party name, vote for the issues affecting the country. No matter how much vote buying the government will do, that will not stand. Regardless of all the bribery and vote buying, the people spoke. They want a change. This is how democracy works. Let us show the present dictator that we have, how democracy works. Dominica was not willed to this corrupt government., This is the lowest we have become as Dominicans. The poor have been made depend to depend on Skerrit. They have taken away the public works where the poor man would work for himself and earn a livelihood. They have taken it away to give their brothers and friends, the contracts and the jobs where they get their under the table cuts. Please Dominica, don’t be afraid. Let us join the prople’s revolution and reject Skerrit and his cabal government who have become millionaires on the back of the tax payers. Change is a must in Dominica. Let us do like the people where the last two elections were held, vote in the opposition. Yes, it is time for change. Dominicans, we are an intelligent people and we will not be fooled again. Let us look out for the spin doctors to come but we know that Antiguans wanted a change and voted for a change.

@anonymous..”Let us look out for the spin doctors to come but we know that Antiguans wanted a change and voted for a change.” it looks as if you don’t have to look far to find the first spin doctor. I wonder what would be your spin if UPP had won.

    June 13, 2014

the result of the Antigua election tells us in the democratic world that two terms really is enough.any party that keep pushing for a third term is nothing more then anti democratic. so the educated and patriotic citizen should understand that concept.if not corruption, division, and poverty will take dominance over us hence the RED CLINIC
    which is obviously not sustainable..

Like I have said , the opposition won because the electorate was fed with bad governance and corruption. It doesn’t matter which colour or party the political opposition was. It’s just that we were fed up!!

    June 13, 2014

The wind of CHANGE is BLOWING! Change is a MUST, not an option! We in Antigua spoke yesterday. We told our government that we are not going to vote color or party but for Development. I listened to Skerrit this morning trying to make people believe is labor we turning to. What a lie! We had labor for many years and we saw they were going in the wrong direction we kicked them out and voted UPP in 2004 and gave them 10 years to correct our national image that was so badly damaged by the ABLP of Bird. He corrected our image but of late they were going the corrupt route of the Bird administration and they did nothing to improve the economy, so we, being a politically educated nation that vote ISSUES and not color kicked them out! So this is not good news for Skerrit who is now known to be one the most corrupt administration in the Caribbean and our economy is at the worse it has been since our independence. So we did not vote ABLP because we saw labor as the solution; we voted for CHANGE. In Dominica the DLP is the problem and we will turn to the UWP to see what they have to offer. If they go the same route of Skerrit we shall teach them a lesson like we did in 2000.

    People voted for Change!

  31. June 13, 2014

The vision of the ABLP is close to that of Team Dominica UWP in Dominica we need to make the change .The DLP in Dominica is not the same party of Edward Oliver LeBlanc and it’s time that all Dominicans remember that especially when they go to the poll, As for the up grading of the Voters List I’m very proud of ABLP in Antigua they kept pressing the UPP on that until they conceded, it’s time that Dominicans put fire under the pot it’s time we demand that change from the GOVT of Skerrit we should have a very smooth election whenever it is called.
Dominicans remember it is not only the responsibility of Team Dominican UWP it’s all of us business so I call that we start putting on the pressure don’t be afraid to voice your opinion,

DLP is making sure that the people on the Island don’t have much chance to demonstrate or whatever regarding the Voters List so the people should make sure a change takes place at the POLL
It is not the people in Dominica that will be putting back the DLP Party in power that will happen by those folks coming in from the Diaspora and that’s wrong, so I hope they will respect the folks back home to make the choice they want and we out here should accept if.

CHANGE IS A MUST AND STAND BEHIND THE FOLKS AT HOME.

After ten years in office, the Antiguans have voted the UPP out. The theme on the Antiguan Laborites’ tee-shirts during the campaign was, “WE CANNOT EAT CONCRETE; WE WANT MONEY…..” So here you got it my people.

While the Antiguan Laborites cannot eat concrete, Roosevelt Skerrit believes he can dazzle you with infrastructure, Chinese concrete, Chinese jobs rather than jobs to put money in your pockets. Wake-up my people! It’s not about Labor or party, it’s not about who is “RED,” it’s about survival of our people and recognition of our sovereignty.

Antiguans made that change, now it’s left with you to make that change for the future of our children. Take heed people!
