Letang calls for budget provisions to increase public officers’ salaries

Letang (r) with DPSU president, Steve Joseph

General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang wants to see provisions included in the 2019/2020 National Budget to increase public officers’ salaries.

“I believe that budget provisions should be made to pay public officers a salary increase,” Letang said at a recent DPSU news conference. “In that budget, we should see provision being made to actually implement the recommendation of the job classification review committee.”

Letang complained that over the years, the union has never seen much in the budget for public officers.

“We have not always been part of a pre-budget discussion and even when we are invited, we are invited a few days before the actual budget presentation,” Letang remarked. “I will not be surprised if there isn’t much in it for public officers.”

He continued, “Because if the intention was to include in that budget certain things that will be to the advantage of public officers, then government would at least see negotiations as a pre-budget discussion with the union and would have been very happy to have started to commence negotiations with the union.”

This is the only Gov’t in the history of Dominica which never shows interest in increasing any form of salaries on Island.
Please, do your research to find out why they were forced to give peanut salary increases over the years.
They are very interested to keep public officers poor.

government is not smart as i see it when it comes with public servants re salaries
these people are the ones who keep the country running, give security, treat the ill, stop fire, teach the children for the future and keep criminals from the streets. even in dangerous times like hurricanes and sometimes whilst there family are not secured.

thats why certain countries will always thrive because they take care of these institutions.

He, Roosevelt Menard Skerrit might not have anything placed in the budget for public officers but while reading his speech he might just throw a temper tandrum and include something.

Is this because Public works is doing bigger and better things that add value to the General Public & Public services department or is it because they just want more money for doing the same things?

Skerrit and his gang are turning our country into one where the salaries are so low, the people are forced to depend on the government for things they would have otherwise provided for themselves. This dependence on the government puts them in total control, they will start making laws to suit their agenda, control the police, control the media. Skerrit is trying to turn our country into a little Cuba. If you, my fellow Dominicans don’t wake up and you put these guys back in, you will be on your own. I personally will be on the next flight out because I know soon after that you will be applying for permission to leave the island like they do in Cuba.

It’s blatantly obvious that the present administration has no respect for DSUP president nor its members. The main reason for this lack of respect is Skerrit and his subservient underlings are convinced that the members are not solidly behind the leadership of their union. If every member were to get behind their leaders, the government will have no choice but to acquiesce to the demands of the union. Nothing good comes easily, it takes sacrifice. History has shown us this in the examples of Gandhi, Magellan, Martin Luther King Jr., et al. Cowardice, dependency, indifference and laziness accomplishes nothing. Only by stoutly standing behind the leadership of your union will they get the courage and the confidence to bring home the beacon.

Ibo MALAPROP France, don’t you think that the reason why the members are not solidly behind the back of the leadership of the union is because they are seeing that the union leaders are acting in their(leaders) interest and not really for the members?
Letang is a Politician and looking for position.
Talking about lazy. Tell the Dominican public what has the UWP have done to assist Dominica in it’s recovery after hurricane Maria?
What has the leader of the opposition done?

:?: For 20 years this union have been crying out to this one-man rogue regime prime mistake and all he, the union and public officers receive in return, are insults and disrespect from the one-man rogue regime prime mistake! Five percent was cut from the salaries of public officers, while the rogue regime incrised theirs and no actions were taken by the union and public officers! The rogues continue to offer the union and public officers three zero percent and the public officers remain inactive while they allow the one-man rogue regime to call elections after elections and still hold on to power, for the most part illegally! If the union and public officers allow this one-man rogue regime to announce another elections without stopping him, then alas!!!!

A government ability to pay or increase payment of wages depend on the CURRENT Revenue collected. So give us some actual numbers to work with. Letang can look at the actual numbers of the last 3 financial years in the annual estimates and demonstrate that the government have the ability to pay.
as the leader of the CSA he can publish those numbers on DNO to inspire pubic awareness and support for the CSA cause and not his political cause. His approach is not that of a negotiator but that of a blackmailer .It sounds like a demand for a ransom……”pay up or I will shut down the country.”
Drigo (police), and nurses have the same approach. Their actions look like a practice /rehearsal for a May 29, 1979 type shut down of the country. Their activities of D-Day, 2017 is a case in point.
