LETTER TO THE EDITOR: R.U.M, An Unwise Move

Saphire

Dear Editor,

Carnival is an important part of our society and I for one L?VE the Celebration- I find it quite liberating – what concerns me is when organizers of carnival  attempts to transform the celebration and carnival becomes corrupt in its meaning.  We Dominicans need to think long and hard as to what we tolerate as a people.

Listen, I recognize that everyone is free to express themselves, creating the opportunity for perspectives to freely roam. The organizers of this band was I’d assume trying to make light of a heavy situation in Dominica, and they thought it be creative with the Acronym RUM- meaning Ruthless and Undefeated by Maria. On one hand, some are not bothered by it; on the other hand, other people are somewhat offended and others are disgusted by it and rightly so.

As an organizer of any event, it’s really important to listen to the people. The key characteristic is empathy.   We are increasingly encountering shocked reactions by the people at the theme, the section names, at the flagrant display of fleshiness by the costumes, at this time the high costs of costumes, and some have even raised the issue of the character of women who model these costumes. The organizers are apparently being dismissive and need to recognize that the reality is that these “haha’s” to some, is particularly offensive to other people.  Such who may be offended tend to fall into professional categories like teachers, media representatives, religious leaders, parents, and all kinds of other people.

The wife of the prime minister should consider changing the name and to be quite frank in my opinion, should not even have had a band especially at such a high price per costume that is not serving as a fundraiser and a great majority of the residents cannot afford at this time. Additionally, it is obviously beyond offensive due to the real harm that may result.  The display and expression of language in music and art form can be appreciated by some, and at the same time others may have a different outlook.  This may be especially so when social morals weigh heavily on the types of apparel donned and suggestive motives at national activities. If the organizers and Mrs. Skerrit, really cared about the plight of the people of Dominica, they would quickly amend course, as the theme is making a significantly large portion of the population feel unjustly offended. If the wife of the prime minister can wrap this basic concept around her head – that there are people impacted by those words, changing the name would be a no brainer- but then again, it would require an individual to have a heart, a brain and to be reasonable to do so.

The one thing we can agree on is that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Thus, Mrs. Skerrit certainly, or anyone as a matter of fact, has the choice to name their band, conduct their businesses, etc, in whatever way they may choose- it’s their prerogative. What everyone must equally understand is that no one, none of us are free from the consequences of the choices we made and continue to make.

Carnival is not meant to depict women as sex objects, nor in a degrading or offensive manner- and that is precisely what the wife of the Prime Minister insists on doing – Melissa Skerrit has the power to shape the image and status of women in our society, instead, she chooses to do the complete opposite. Just look at the shocked expressions on the faces of the audience in disbelief as the costumed women walked the “runway” in the middle of streets of Roseau! Is that the images we want to impress upon our children as their future selves? Is that what we want our little boys and little girls to grow up thinking of women as just “eye candy”? Thanks Madame Prime Minister, you’ve certainly created a lasting impression on the minds of our children, unfortunately. Bravo, NOT, for supporting the stereotypes of women- there is a saying that one’s priorities speaks to ones character -you are who you are and it shows over and over again!

To conclude, as a respectable woman, as a mother, I strongly discourage the use of such terms, such language especially from the Dominica Prime Ministers Wife Band- in my opinion it is in poor taste and sends the wrong message to the people of Dominica and the global community- it was a rather unwise move.

Patriotically Yours
Sapphire Carrington

This is a very hot topic. While I understand where everyone is coming from. As a member of the band, I can tell you sometimes it’s a good way to just release stress. You need to understand everyone has their way of getting rid of stress.
One and only while I agree with you on some points calling someone a hypocrite is a tad excessive. For the Dominicans that find it offensive and gross, you can walk away and turn head, but trying to control something because of moral values is wrong.
    Have a blessed day

lol. most, if not all countries i know, the head of states have wives/spouses who hold high offices. educated, multiple degrees, lawyers, doctors, role models to all, etc. here in dominica we have the head of state’s wife (first lady), organising carnival bands and having our young ladies parade themselves basically naked in the streets. until this years launch, all band organisers i know held theirs at closed venues, so only folks legible to participate in these bands wld attend. this year the pm’s wife find the little children need front row seats to that kind of exposure. so lets do it big afternnoon in the middle of roseau. kudos to u frst lady.

lets not forget the very ‘convenient name’ R U M. segments..tarpauline, rashan, curfew. yeaaa, because my whole home leaking cuz tarpauline roof tear not enuf. ohhhh, because im still eating rashan since ive lost my job cuz of maria. ok frst lady. how very sensitive of u. but i still have life right? lol. i swear allu pple giving…

All the energy used to jump up in the streets would be better used to clean up all the debris throughout the island and for re-building. Debris is being piled up with no viable plan for proper disposal such as the re-cycling of the material that can be re-cycled such as plastic, tin and cardboard. The Prime Minister should designate a clean up week and have everything taken to one designated location for proper collection. He should use the monies from the CBI programmed and the donations to pay the young people of the island to do that, that would give them gainful employment and these monies would flow back into the local economy. Leadership is what it is all about.

You all complain to much, the PM went on tv begging for help…broke down as strong as he is…he got money for Dominica, some of the money I guess was used to finance carnival (as I heard) , guess what? The money will be made back. Ppl want to enjoy themselves, let it go….you complain because the band costumes are half naked, you complain the half the country has no power even though we got it hard by a hurricane you all want power in months time, if the PM had cancel carnival you WOULD complain that the PM is stupid for canceling carnival, PeOple from USA and Canada set charities and groups to help you and send down food and guess what? I know certain were still complaining! You all complain way too much for everything…anyways I need to move on to my next post, sapphire and her silly post has taken enough of my time. But I will say this. You throw moral values out there, you throw bible verses out there, say what you want.

Yes those costumes have no place on our streets…we need to all band together make this stop. While we are at it, let’s also
Blast the TV companies for showing movies with adult scenes…nudity on tv is wrong and it goes against our religious beliefs
And morals!!! If they refused let’s all cancel our cable tv because what we see in tv is wrong….which one of you will cancel your tv to avoid seeing sexy half naked women?
Which one of you will stop watch ugly body parts on tv as someone yet in one of the posts?
Which one of you will use religion and moral values as a weapon to block your action, comedy romance and drama movies because they contain nudity and 1 or 2 sex scenes?? I can guarantee NOT ONE OF YOU WILL. But by all means it happens on our streets and we blast the organizer…All of you are hypocrites!
Oh I almost forgot, you might as well cancel the internet, kids can look up anything and delete the history and you won’t know.

  6. January 16, 2018

i thought long and hard about it. I honestly believe the PMs wife never thought that her actions would be so distasteful for some. those of us who don’t like the costumes should forgive her . she is just human. However, we should applaud sapphire for recognizing that this was a bad move after the devastation and the names are not fitting. In this country, it appears that there are two perfect people in D.A Mr . skerrit and his wife. They are not perfect and they make mistakes and people have every right to say that.
to the women who wish to flaunt their mans bodies for other men with no moral code or principle by which they live, i hope u are so sexy and tempting that you get to model naked.
Big up carnival models- but watch your back ur lil girl looking at everything u do!

Sistah I love this story and have read it a few times–thanks a million Saphire.
But lets face it–you gave this lady Melissa way too much credit—She is no Michele Obama for sure-and lets face it, she has the backing of her husband Skerrit the PM of our home.
That is where Dominica is today.

      Love your name Saphire

Very good article. Pretty blunt, yet not offensive. I agree that the wife of the Prime Minister should attempt to set the standard for morality and acceptable conduct. I agree that those costumes have no place on our streets or anywhere for that matter.

I will not join in personalising the issue and castigating the lady but there are some things that are just not done, particularly when you are in public life. Although not an elected official, the wife of the Prime Minister is in public life and everything she does is going to be scrutinised.

Poor judgement on this one madam, no argument necessary.

Thanks for your well written piece Saphire.

Go easy on Mrs Skeritt. She is just being real to the game we call Carnival. First, lets look at the origin of the word, Carnival. Latin words carnis (Human or animal flesh or meat ) and levare (to leave off, something or all out) So! Many of us already know that! We either embrace ALL the symbols of the god of Bacchanal as is, or Goodliness. Well, Christ-like! Not a little of this on Meatday/Tuneday and a little of that on Wednesday / Lentday. Individually, we have to make a responsible choice. Long before the emergence of Christianity, people whom we call pagans today had wild celebrations centered around “Rum and Iron”. We in large numbers have become familiar with the requirements of Christ to come clean.

Heads up! So too Carnival an old practice by “massa” to keep down rebellions of any kind.

Ps! Melissa can only DO Melissa not MO. Be real folks.

Let’s all dress up and cover up from head to toe like certain ppl and let’s lets also ban certain movies and shows on tv…let Dominica have morals to the max not just at carnival

  12. A Kind of Opinion
    January 15, 2018

I expected someone to speak. hmm. The ladies, the bodies, the costumes… heck! Get over it! Sad to say we are leaning closer to how the Brazilians and Trinidadians revel but there are many women who do so without even joining a costume band! they do it plain on Jouvet. Women have their choice, although it may not be in line with your bible preaching but to each his own. Whatever! The theme, the theme, the theme… honestly… seriously… Tarpaulin? Curfew?…. Like where is the ethical reasoning and compassion behind this? Just the word Tarpaulin can trip a “Roof-less” person. There are many many still affected and traumatized from Maria. Who wants to be reminded that they are Roofless anyways?! Regardless they are undefeated, they still hurt someway somehow. Persons will join regardless. It is their choice and if they think spending money on a costume band is a priority then so be it. The theme just needed a revision. Sounds kind of un-compassionate to circumstances. Bye!

even if I love melissa why can’t I tell her that those outfits defame women and herself? A category five hurricane devastated the island and your husband pleaded with the UN for aid and now you’re launching a costume band that is the most pricey and has the most outrageous attire. As a public figure, everything you do is scrutinized and this time I do not agree with the decision made by the PMs wife.
Address the nation. Give women, mothers a pillar of hope. Not an immoral dressing that they have to pay for.
And trust Dominicans to associate politics with right and wrong, especially those who don’t mind seeing women and children half naked.
What sort of women empowerment is that!

I see no issue with the bands coming out. We have to show the world that Maria put us down, but we’re not out! Other countries are moving on from their hurricane woes…though there remains lots to do, we cannot sit and dwell on the fact that maria take everything. We have to get up and go out and do for ourselves. If people want to spend their l’argent on carnival costumes and rum and sewo, who are you to tell them “NO!”? You are the money police then? You want to tell people what to do with THEIR money that THEY work hard for? Give me a break tan!

      Lyn
      im so surprised at your comments ;
”you want to tell people what to do with THEIR money that THEY work hard for ?
Are you trying to imply that the Diasporans who sent money home after Maria, did not work hard for theirs ?
Had not Dominicans receive that much assistance and relief,do you think they would all have the disposable cash to spend lavishly now?
I know of civil servants who are yet to touch their December wages,no need to, for the first time in their lives .
A friend told me,a family member who had been constantly requesting a barrel from his relative who lives away, almost went mad, when he received an empty barrel from that relative, the documents stated, ”1 empty barrel, had no money to fill it.” I creased up laughing.
We Dominicans need to be very careful what we are projecting out there to our donors
and those who brave the cold every winter, to sacrifice sending barrels full of commodities to friends and family who, then appear better…

      • dee
        January 16, 2018

than those sending us the barrels .
we need to remember , disasters could keep coming from now on ,and these donors, will now have second thoughts the next time around .
You see all that relief stuff that is lying there in containers on the port ,
mark my words , they tell a story ; not an encouraging one .

This piece, though inconsistent in the address of Mrs. Popone-Skerrit (who, btw, cannot be stylized “Madem Prime Minister” as she doesn’t hold this office), raises some interesting points post Hurricane Maria – should we make light of the hurricane so soon afterwards? Should the costumes be so skimpy (for certainly they are!)? Should the organisers have listened to the people more? The answers are all “maybe”. Calypso has already started to take a swing post Maria (“Everybody loot in a line”), the costumes have become skimpier with each progressive year, and clearly the organisers are aiming at a particular sector of society that could afford these costumes in the first place. As for the “RUM” name, prior to the publication of this letter, the designation of the letters had been changed.

We must learn to live and let live – everyone does not process or recover in the same way. Allow those who choose to do it this in way to do so – it is only ethical (which, btw, is not…

    January 15, 2018

Right or Wrong? (speaking sole about the language behind the theme, I love the costumes)

I am amazed that people of sense thought that this could be a theme of a carnival band being put on by the PMs wife and it not receive harsh criticism. To me this goes passed being insensitive, and just being a poorly thought through marketing scheme.

You have launched first, have nice costumes, and likely a better budget than other bands… literally all you had to do was choose a unifying theme. Thats the sad part to me.

    Bless.

It is naive to expect no comment on the public behaviour of a person who is in the same public limelight. I would be very surprised it would make mrs.Skerrit happy if she were ignored. It is clear she loves the attention and it is only natural that her exposure provoke reactions, be they supportive or otherwise.

  23. January 15, 2018

I started off reading this piece convinced that it was coming from a deeply moral Dominican who is concerned about the welfare of our young women and all women in general. However, as I proceeded I found that the contents of the letter degenerated into a crass attack on someone with whom the author likely has some personal unresolved matter. It is unfortunate that at this juncture as a nation we can’t discuss issues without personalizing the situation. Equally unfortunate is the attack here on the character of the author, but this is what happens when the matter is brought down into the latrin.

    January 15, 2018

I am an avid carnival lover. I take part in almost all the events including the street jump up. Our carnival was never about nudity!! If we want to emulate what we see overseas, that is a personal issue. You are free to travel to Trinidad and be part of the nudity. What the writer is saying is that this is NOT Dominica and the general public would like to keep it that way. If you want to spend your thousand dollars on a costume, feel free! If you want to be nude, I think the laws of Dominica are still in effect when it comes to public nudity!

  26. Mouton Batalie
    January 15, 2018

From the comments I have read, it is clear that we can do nothing to open the eyes of people who are blinded by politics. First, I have no problem with anyone, whether it is Prime Minister’s wife or other. We live in a free country, and to some extent a free world, and people are free to make their own decisions. Whatever decision you make, you live with it. She may choose to have a carnival band, that is her choice. She can choose to make it extremely expensive, that is her choice. She can choose to make it nude, that is her choice. The others who also choose to follow her, are free to make their choice. My problem becomes a social issue. When in our tiny island, we choose to promote public nudity and intoxication, we have lost every morale fiber. What you choose to do in the privacy of your home is up to you but when you take it to the streets, that is totally different. Yes, the public has a right to be offended! We now have no choice but to be exposed to this…

    • The One and Only

      That’s right…but you have a choice…stay away from carnival

  27. January 14, 2018

Tremendous comment Saphire, it’s been a while, since i’ve read a true MORALE statement coming from a woman,. Like the GEM your name represents, i applaud. We need not asked, who the members of that band will be, presuming the top echelons of the DLP being part of this Governmental carnival band, Dominica’ top security will be afforded to them. From what i’ve gathered, the prime minister’s wife, have no intentions whatsoever to implant morality into dominica’ every day life, R.U.M. can mean what ever one wants it to, we all know the effects of rum. THE QUALITY OF A NATIONS CULTURE, IS BASED ON THE ATTITUDE OF IT’S WOMEN, should i say more?

And the attack is on the one and only….Vanessa, I’m just being honest and straight to the point..you all complain about everything..if the cosumes offends you then go somewhere else where are not “offended”.
Stop bringing morals into this…you go to the beach and you women is bath suits and that’s okay right? But women taking part in carnival with slightly less clothing is going against morals??? I guess Adam and Eve had no morals? I guess when God made them he had no morals??? Right???? As I said before Dominicans complain a lot will find anything to complain about…
You’re offended? Stay home or go somewhere else…Done!
Actually not done….if you are watching a movie with adult scenes and they are fully nude do you change the channel?? If you’re answer is yes, you’re a hypocrite because I’m sure everyone here will watch a full R rated movie with a nude scenes or but let’s attack a band because women are showing too much skin???? Give me a break..

The One & Only you’re simple minded!!! You need to read your bible Genesis 3:7. You definitely need a Kit Kat bar to munch on ’cause you’re boring just like Warehouse.

Well said. Expat and The One and Only, I believe fail to understand the bigger picture. That ridiculous exposer by this woman who is the wife of a failed P, was disgusting, distasteful, has not morale message, has no cultural connotation to it, but rather practised own right to exposed a seemingly ridiculous ugly bodily parts in public and call this beauty or carnival. This exposure by this person is really immature and questions the home where it originates from. this woman and others really need some parental guidance. It appears their companies , people around them, immediate of extended are immature and themselves lacks some decent morality. Pathetic , distasteful and ugly shape of things to come

      • The One and Only
        January 15, 2018

Ugly body parts??? Hahaha funny…maybe yours is lol…I guess when or if you go to the beach everyone is covered up from head to toe bathing….
Ugly body parts??? I guess married couples have to deal with ugly body parts…such a pain to deal with ugly body parts….
Ugly body parts..I want a family ……but I have to deal with the ugly body parts of my spouse…

Lastly, ugly body parts! I hate the fact that God gave me such ugly body parts…
Why did God give us such ugly body parts??

You all throw use morals as a weapon when it best suits you…

It’s 2018…get a life and if what women wear offends you, turn your head and walk the other way..if women dress sexy for carnival, that’s their choice. I’m not a fan of the PM’s wife but if that’s what she wants to do and it offends you stay at your home. Let them be free, where what they want, everyone is entitled to their own. Once there is no violence, everything else is allowed.
Either enjoy carnival or stay home..Done..

Well I guess to be in carnival in the nude is perfectly ok. You see, you respond to things spontaneously without thinking of the bigger morale picture. Carnival is suppose to be artistic, a remembrance of getting away from those who colonise us, a celebration of freedom, life, development of ourselves and country, break this bondage and move on. If there is no meaning to what we do them we are a failed people. Dominicans think before you talk,

      • The One and Only
        January 15, 2018

Nope…I meant what I said..it’s 2018 everyone is entitled to what they want to wear during carnival…if it offends ppl, those that are offended need to jump up in their home where they don’t feel offended. That being said if 300 wanna have the “naked band” let it go..stay home or embrace change.

      1 Timothy 2:9
Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire. Let that sink in…..

      • The One and Only
        January 15, 2018

Lol great!!!!lets use religion as a weapon now..bravo…my response to that stay home and read the holy book.
You talk about moral and what the Bible says…I’m sure you have seen adult scenes on a movie. I’m not talking about x rated movie but just a regular action or drama movie etc…when there are adults scenes does you religious beliefs and morals get you to change the channel and switch back??? If you are wife you spouse or bf only do you switch back?? No you don’t. So it’s okay to watch it on tv but not okay to see it live….lol hypocrite

RUM + half-naked women + weak security = violence. Guaranteed.

This is NOT a depiction of Dominican carnival but simply Dominicans “following fashion” like a bunch of lemmings and copying the Mas of other countries. Bad idea, now Trinidad is having a problem with scantily clad female revelers being attacked in the bands!
What’s wrong with our traditional costumes like the sensay or other creations which do not involve women having to bare their skin? What’s wrong with some nice t-shirt bands this year?
A minimum of $500.00 to join this band? Wow! Isn’t the duty-free concession over soon? Then what? Think of how hard your families have to work to send those barrels to help you all out before you squander your money on such frivolous things. Have a heart if you cannot use you heads and of course, have a conscience as the young ones look on for they will be the leaders of tomorrow.

      • The One and Only
        January 15, 2018

1.Stop trying to control what people do with their money..it’s their business not yours!
        2. Let us where what we want, you can watch a naked couple on tv working it and u cannot see more skin in person? Attitude of Hypocrite…
        3. If the police actually do their job properly and have a zero tolerance for violence there will be no violence
Example- if you are drunk you’re out of the band no ifs, ands or buts…
If you act rough or start a fight, that is jail time and or the police need to use force and make an example of someone….but the police are weak! If violence occurs, I blame our weak police force.

        4. If scantily clad women offend you, stay home and read a book.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT hehehe….if you’re trying to hide scantily clad women from our young children, news flash you can see everything on the internet and when you think you have control and cut the internet, children have friends with internet access..

By the way I have heard that the costumes are expensive…is that any of your business? If you don’t have the money go in another band….The people who buy those expensive costumes are either stupid or wealthy, why would you not take money from a Stupid or wealthy person?? I would. This is one time she used her brain so i applaud her for it.

Very well written. Unfortunately what you don’t realize about Dominica, people like Melissa Skerrit and others in high position don’t listen to the people. They have an authoritative kind of style. My decision is the only one that matters; it is good so no one can make me change it. Believe me I have written on issues also so I know. Sadly, Melissa Skerrit is behaving like a spoilt rich kid. Instead of using her position as wife of the PM to to have a positive impact on society she has done the opposite. Some of us still cry about the effects of Maria. This is just too soon, the effects are just too raw to have a band name called RUM and sections like rashion, tarpaulin and curfew. I cannot and will never be able to wrap my mind over these distasteful names when so many people need relief due to loss of employment. So many still have tarpaulin because the insurance payouts are moving at snail pace. Shame on you Melissa Skerrit.

Well said…brilliant… I love this. Thanks. The part I love most is a message of decency and resect addressed to Melissa. It appears she is ignorant or oblivious f the role she holds. I probably don’t blame her because her husband is a failed Pm who has not displayed any level of decency for the office he holds and addressing people who oppose his rhetoric with “Go to Hell….Go to hell, none of ur damn business”. that will resonate for life s mark on this inept rime Mininister. Melissa must be hidden in her room crying as he rad this messages and we hope she matures herself more Go find an adult to talk to you on orality, decency in pubic places and how to be a role model as you are the wife (alas) of a questionable PM.
Alas, God please save Dominica and help us get decent and mature leadership in government. Amen

You’re asking God for help on a mature government??? Really??? Why don’t you form a party and do something about instead of complaining lol…that’s the attitude of a typical Dominica. Sit down complain and do nothing and keep complaining….

……, you don’t like it, close your eyes and don’t join.. Leave the people free up their head. No one is forcing you to even watch the costumes. And in my opinion majority of the people that have an ‘issue’ with the band is not because of the band itself but becsuse of the OWNER! Stop making this into a political\personal vendetta against the prime ministers wife. Get over allu damn self ! I love the costumes and tge prices are more than reasonable. Great job Amnesia!
