The Leader of the Opposition is accusing the Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration of making it impossible to implement electoral reform in Dominica and said it is time for the prime minister to resign.
Lennox Linton made the renewed call when the United Workers Party held a press conference on Monday.
He said the government has refused to accept and implement best practice electoral reform recommendations from the international community and civil society organizations in Dominica in the interest of free and fair elections.
In fact, Linton said in recent times Skerrit’s attack on the people’s right to free and fair elections and his unrelenting assault on the constitutional rule of law on good governance have underlined serious misconduct in the office of Prime Minister which necessitates his resignation or his removal from office.
“We say today, as an unapologetic enemy of the people’s right to free and fair elections, Roosevelt Skerrit cannot be the one calling the elections to fairly determine government of the people by the people, for the people; he must resign,” Linton remarked.
He said an interim government led by a suitable member of the DLP cabinet can be appointed with a specific mandate.
“Provide the necessary resources for the electoral commission to organize free and fair elections with the assistance of the commonwealth, OAS, CARICOM in implementing the basic reforms the commission decided on more than 11 years ago,” Linton added.
He also called for a commission of inquiry to investigate the Prime Minister.
Meantime, Roseau South MP, Attorney Joshua Francis believes that the entire Cabinet of the Prime Minister should resign.
“I will go further than the Honourable leader, Lennox Linton to say that the entire Cabinet should resign..,” he said. “Not one Cabinet member has stood on the side of righteousness in respect to the uncleanness perpetrated and adopted by the Dominica Labour Party. They need to go.”
Francis believes that the DLP is desperate and they are pursuing all measures to stay in office.
He said the DLP candidate for Roseau Central is not fit to be a candidate.
“I hope that the people of Roseau Central demands that she resigns as a candidate and hopefully, the Dominica Labour Party can get [someone else] to contest the elections because she has already proven herself to be unsuitable, incompetent and unfit to represent a constituency,” Francis said.
PM, the man upset from the time you came to Guadeloupe. I recall in 2014, there were 39ppl at a UWP meeting in Guadeloupe and we had more Labourites in. Why the persistent surreptitious fight between Mr Linton and his deputy? Why does Mr Francis feel the ongoing need to be always a part of the conversation? Here in a not so subtle display of underlying strife, The Leader calls for one action and Mr Francis feels that he must make his own call. Where in the world does a political party function like this?
I would hope that the party’s position is first discussed with its leadership before any public pronouncements are made. Mr Francis, as the deputy leader, would be a member of the party’s leadership and would be aware of the party’s position before it is made public by it’s leader. This behavior is never seen in Labor party or any other political party for that matter. It reveals an effort by a subordinate to undercut the party’s leader. UWP needs to be aware of Mr Francis’s efforts to undermine his leader and possibly create strife in the party. Mr Francis needs to fall in line and give the party a unified voice or be removed.
