Long-standing impasse between DASPA and port workers to be resolved ‘before the end of June’, says PM

Longshoremen and stevedores will soon see an end to a 22-year-old impasse in which their salaries were cut by 33 percent, by the end of June this year. This was according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who met with port workers at the Goodwill Parish Hall on Tuesday night. Over 100 port workers have been affected by this impasse.

The Prime Minister revealed that the longstanding dispute between the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) and the longshoremen and stevedores is something that he has been dealing with.

“I am confident that before the end of June, we will bring to an end this impasse and have a mutually accepted settlement between DASPA and the longshoremen,” Mr. Skerrit stated.

He continued, “They have agreed that it is not in their interest for them to prolong this matter.”

He added, “People have retired, people have died, people are about to retire and I think that it will be an opportunity for the union to be able to share this money among those who have retired and those who are about to retire, so people can have some money in their hands rather than nothing at all.”

The Prime Minister described the engagement with the port workers, including the executive, the Board, and the management of DASPA as a “very constructive mutually respectful” one.

“It was really an opportunity for me to hear from the men and their concerns and what their recommendations are and how we should address the concerns,” he stated.

Skerrit pointed out that all of the points that were raised need to be addressed by DASPA as a matter of urgency.

“What I have decided to put in place is a structure that will access all the points that they raised and put a schedule to ensure that we can implement those points,” Mr. Skerrit stated. “That structure, our task force will include representatives of the longshore and stevedore men so that they have a part to play.”

Skerrit added, “They have asked for one of their members to be on the board and I will effect that.”

And while you’re at it please clean the customs floors where your workers walk and sit around all day. It is a so simple power-wash once a year.
