Come this Saturday, January 21, 2022, fairly newcomer to the calypso arena Kendra Stephen, stage name Lucious, will take the stage among 31 other calypsonians to battle for a seat in the calypso semi-finals.
Following Webster “De Web” Marie’s decision to withdraw from this year’s competition, Lucious, who was selected as the first reserve in the elimination round on December 30, 2022, made her way onto the list of quarter-finalists.
Speaking to Dominica News Online (DNO), the calypso singer who made her debut last year in the virtual competition and advanced to the semi-final, voiced her enthusiasm to compete in the actual show with some of the big names.
“I am very excited,” she stated. “Though the competition seems very tight, come Saturday, I am going to do my best to make it to the next round.”
Only 20 of the 32 calypsonians will advance to the semi-finals slated for February 4, 2023, according to the president of the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA), Davidson “Observer” Victor; who urged patrons to attend in large numbers tomorrow.
“We are going back to making history,” he declared to DNO.
“Notwithstanding that, we had the virtual shows, but for calypso to be in its full bloom where we can have the usual crowd in the park, we are back to doing that and we are asking persons to join us in their numbers at the quarter-finals and let us show the world that Dominica is still the country that loves calypso the most in the Caribbean,” Victor added.
The 32 calypsonians, in order of their performance at the quarter-final, will include Sour- Sour- “Amigo”; Lucious- “Sour-Sop”; Soul Puss- “Where Can I Travel”; Tasha P- “Calypso High”; Jamma B-“Everything I Have is Here”; Shadow Flow- “Mental Anarchy”; Third Eye-“You”; Joy- “Silence of My friends”; Danyan-“Its Over” and Mighty D with :”Talking Dogs”.
Coming in at number eleven will be Inciter- “Dominica not for Sale”, followed by Bingo- “Dem High Prices”; Trendsetter-“MoBanking”; Checker- “Playing Politics”; Comforter -“I Eh Singing Nothing”; Lady Esse-“Illuminati”; White Fayrie- “Cross The Bridge”; Daddy Chess- “Hegas, No Gas”; Observer- “Dats What I Like About Carnaval”; Trilla G-“Dick Taylor Ship” and Mighty Omee with “Blame who’s to Blame”.
The final ten will include Black Diamond- “My Granny Change”; Vigilante- “De Spider’s Web”; De Healer- “Gangstar Society”; Royette-“Help”; Bobb- “If I Was Prime Minister”; Dice- “Everything Lost”; Shanice- “#CONCERNED”; Checko- “Speak De Truth”; Explosion- “A Soul”; Chris B-“Love Gas” and finally, Karessah singing “Eh Dead as Yet”.
The ticket price for the show which is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 pm at the Windsor Park Stadium forecourt is $40 standing and $50 seating.
Those who cannot attend can stream via ComeSeeTv, DBS Radio and Kiari FM for $15 US.
