Man charged for allegedly making threats against PM Skerrit

The police have arrested and charged Leslie Martin of Portsmouth for allegedly making threatening comments on social media about Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

In a video posted on social media, Martin is heard saying “is not you I want to kill, is Skerrit”
Today, he appeared before a Roseau magistrate where the charge of threatening Roosevelt Skerrit was read to him. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of 2, 500.00 in his own recognizance and asked to stay away from Prime Minister Skerrit.
Martin’s lawyer, Tiyani Behanzin, also asked the court to ask the prime minister to stay away from his client and his home since “they are campaigning,” he said,  going house to house.
The matter has been adjourned to August 29, 2019 in St. Joseph.

I second the motion. Justice should be blind. The top brass of the Police Force has it twisted. We want equal rights and justice for all. The Dominican police are presently acting like the Tonton Macoute of Haiti’s dictator, Papa Doc and the Mongoose Gang of Grenada’s Eric Gary. They act like Skerrit’s fierce lapdogs.

We see an increase in accusation and blame that was unheard of, but is spreading anger and hatred . There are people who want to see Dominica reduced to an uncivilized nation where we shed the blood of our parents, relative and friends like in a civil war.
I do not think that is the wishes of Our Lord in a place that is referred to as the Nature Island and the Land of the Lord.

Is there some kinds of hidden conspiracy to criminalize Dominica ? Are we becoming our own worst enemy?
Navigating through the visual media outlets I observe that most of if not all the negatives about Dominica are posted by Dominicans. Are we becoming agents of some destructive force out to take out our country? The question is why !
Why the disrespect for our police officers ? Why are there moves to compromise our policemen in carrying their duty to maintain law and order? Why the agitation to incite violence? Why the reduction in legal, professional and ethical practice. Are there agents with an agenda to criminalize our country? So much hatred for each other is being merchandised under the guise of advancing social justice. There is an avalanche of antigovernment activity that is beyond normal. For a country where all are related or are historically connected we certainly are displaying a lot of personal hatred.
We cannot agree to disagree without the insults.

To all of you here, who are player lawyer, saying that the person charged did not mention a surname, do you all think that the court will simply say: “he did not use a surname”, so he is free to go? Otherwise why the arrest and a court appearance in the first place?

Will the court not demand that he tell them who is the exact “Skerrit” that he mentioned in his rage, for whatever the reason?

All of you people here, refer to the Prime Minister as Skerrit all the time, even DNO usually say “Skerrit” in their news report when speaking about the Prime Minister of Dominica–so what are you all trying to prove?

Well, I hope that this guy’s Lawyer is not going to use that tactic in court, in his defense –I think that this is a no, no wee!

      Elizabeth, once again shut up!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

The court will not say what?

Everybody with commonsense knows one cannot be judge or magistrate in Dominica unless they are prepared to be a puppet of that corrupted boy, that little wet wicked rat Roosevelt.

If they refuse to honor and protected, him as when one protected him when it was proved he became a French man while he is prime minister of the country; and then lied and said is his mother who got him French citizenship, we would have him in jail for treason, and thievery already.

And believe it or not, the only magistrate who dared asked a defender a question in court which if answered would have sent Roosevelt to jail, when the case was over Roosevelt refuse to renew his contract.

Believe it or not this young magistrate now practicing law is believed to be Roosevelt very own brother oui!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Leslie is one of the luckiest young man in Portsmouth. This man should be a millionaire for land he sold. Plus, some of his father friends passed away and leave land for Leslie. So, this young man had land all over the place and sell them all. Today you want to kill people just because of squandering your money. I wouldn’t sell all that land and build a little shed for me. A man was arrested, he appeared in court with his defense lawyer, so why all the negatives. The Court decided that there was sufficient evidence for trial so let remember that you are innocent until proven guilty.
We have to decide to observe the boundary of civilized society which encourage good behavior.
In Dominica we have the tradition of speaking our minds, but in the present political environment this has taken new directions which can be threatening.

Bernard you are puppet, a tool of Roosevelt Skerrit; this the following is also on social media, when are you going to make an arrest?

When are you going to arrest these two supporters of Roosevelt who in social media call for the killing people who supports the UWP:

Ricky Brumant wrote: ” We should fully ballistic on these oppositiin misfits. And social media is an appropriate opportunity.

These mayhem seekers and sons of demons must be dealt with brought to nothing Skerrit for 2030.”

Merlyn Alexander wrote: ” Government should go on a rampage and just start killing all of them- let Peter pay for Paul cause they same Workers and Freedom.”

If you arrest Martin based on his comments which are all due to his suffering because of a lack of progress in the country; you Bernard should be locked up too because your stupid arrest of that guy is baseless, and is actually criminal!

Also, dont we have freedom of speech? Fine you made your statement and it can b taken seriously, but you should not arrest and charge anyone until they actually do something. Terrorists arent arrested until they do things, like buy explosives, buy guns and ammo, do surveillance in certain areas. in proper countries, they wait for you to mess us while watching u the whole time, or the entrap you in your mess up. OH ok you want to kill skerrit, let me show you my array or high powered auto and semi automatics as well as explosive in order to carry out your mission. They tell you meet me in the parking lot by whitchurch possie, they make the deal then all of a sudden they swoop down on you and arrest you. Then from your statement, it is tied to the buying of ammunition and explosives, and a sound case if presented to the courts. But not this nonsense, police acting like little girls preempting a procedure. Freedom of speech seems to be non existent. IF everybody say they want to kill sker

Every threat should be taken seriously because everything starts as an idea. Having said that, I think the police overplayed their hand. What they could have simply done was to bring Mr. Martin to Police Headquarters and question him. If he made just a vain threat out of anger, give him a stern warning and caution him not to repeat. I strongly believe in law and order for without it the entire country will be in total anarchy. However, the police should be tactful and not to be perceived, by the general public, as bootlickers of an errant government.

Wow!! Idont support threat against anyone but to me that’s not a threat that anyone should be arrested for. If fact it was just last week in Skerrits own constituency a laborite threatened to kill a uwpite and told him about getting his labot friends to spray him with bullets. A report was made at that same moment at the Vieillcase police station and no police came to warn or arrest the laborite though that threat was made in the presence of many witnesses. That same week a Haitian said in Thibaud that if he had a gun he would kill all supporters of uwp and although there was a police present he was not arrested orcharged. So it seems that laboites are encouraged to kill uwpites but as soon as a uwp spit police ready to arrest.

Okay, I don’t see that as a threat, I have a copy; I don’t know if the  Martin ranting and raving, in anger expressing his freedom of speech; which is suppressed in Dominica.

Again only in Dominica; in a corrupted place as ours such nonsense are considered a threats. If the man said “I am going to kill Skerrit” that might be considered a threat; in the first place he did not say “I want to kill Roosevelt Skerrit.”

    Who is Skerrit?

On the island of Montserrat where that name originates there are many people with that name; Antigua too, and last but not lease Dominica also, so all the defending attorney have to ask the court is which Skerrit the man said he want kill!

At the rate it is going in Dominica, there will be plenty of blood shed if things remain status quo!

Soooooooo many people with the name Skerrit. Not just in Dominica. St Kitts have a Skerrit set too. He never gave a first name. Nor did he say PM Skerrit, Or Skerrit the MP for Vielle Case from the video that was made. All he said was Skerrit. Simple and very easy defense. He could even get a dog and name it Skerrit, and say that is what he was referring to.

The charge clearly says threatening the PM Roosevelt Skerrit. All he has to do is say he doesnt know who that man is. and he didnt know he is the PM. IT is now up to prosecutor to prove to the court three things. (1) that he knows who Roosevelt Skerrit is (2) that he knows that Skerrit is the PM of Dominica (3) that the skerrit referred to in the video is in fact the Hon. PM Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, leader of the DLP and PM of the Commonwealth of Dominica. The first 2 are hard to prove, but the 3rd is the hardest, based on the video.

There is a story of a person who killed someone by mistake , his defense was that the victim was not the person he “wanted” to kill. He got two life sentences one for murder and one for intent to kill. ( wanting to kill)

John that is a far cry from what is discoursed; in your hypothesis; a crime of murder was committed; the murderer  had no defense!

In this case no crime is committed, all the man did was expressed his personal opinion, which in common law in a democracy is seemly his freedom of speech!

Arresting him is simply another example of the power of the corrupted dictator Roosevelt, carried out by his corrupted puppet in his police corrupted police force!

so he actually did kill someone right? RIGHT? Now where intent is shown, you have to clearly show where actions were made to back up the words. for example, buying a gun, being caught with rope and handcuffs and a silencer, have evidence that i am carrying out surveillance of the person etc. i mean do you think at all before typing? or maybe your thoughts dont go that far?
