UPDATE: Man fatally stabbed in Fond Cole

Jasvin
Jashvin Jeanjacques

Police are investigating a fatal stabbing which occurred in Fond Cole last night.

According to information received from Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, Jashvin Jean-Jacques, a 20 year-old male of Fond Cole sustained stab wounds to his chest inflicted by Don Hilton Bobb, 34, also of Fond Cole.

The incident occurred about 9.30 pm on Friday, June 21, 2013.

Jean-Jacques was taken to Princess Margaret hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Inspector Carbon said the incident occurred during an altercation between the two men at a liquor shop in Fond Cole.

He said the deceased allegedly assaulted Bobb with a cutlass and Bobb sustained multiple injuries to his head, finger and other parts of his body. He is now a patient at the Alford ward of the PMH.

A coroners inquest will be convened touching the death of the deceased.

I will continue to have this problem with Dominican who just continue to post baseless comments on chat blogs without having facts .This is the reason we as a people will remain stagnant ,where the guys are from or where the incident took place is not the issue here.We as a people need to address the problem, these are two young men ,families are hurting .PROBLEM CAUSES SOLUTION . This where we need to focus our efforts .

i hate to say it but i am not surprised jasvine was involved. i thought him at school and while the school was trying its best to develop programs for the othe boys he was busy dusrupting. he had to be expelled because after being corrected he took a weapon to hurt the studetns and teachers. he always had anger issues and i always feared that if he did not get help or was willing to even accept help he would end up this way….. so sad but young people violence is not the answer

well of course I expect these things. Once you have foreigners coming in by the numbers and many can buy a passport, you can expect the criminals to come in and contaminate the others. Part of it is developement and part is carefree on your government part.
Control the people coming and you will see the difference.
I live in NYC and just last week a Dominican Republic man with a store know I am from Dominica – he is asking me for an address in Dominica for his sister to get into Dominica. I told him I left over 20 years, I have no address.

These countries as Canada, US and Europe (certainly Great Britain) have cut down on the influx of immigrants. The economy is bad all over including the high rate of unemployment. When they migrate to a country and are not employed, the government is obligated to be financially responsible for them. This is at taxpayers’ expense as their taxes increase.
There are some people who think the world owes them everything and they owe the world nothing.
At this stage and for this reason, I do think that the governments of the smaller islands should not encourage and accept unemployed immigrants. Some have taken advantage of the earthquake in Haiti to leave their country, never to return.
Millions, if not billions of dollars were raised to assist Haiti. If the Haitian government is organized and honest, all the people should have been assisted by now and the Haitians should have returned to their country. It is not discriminating but simply fair and sensible.
There should be no need for them to migrate to another country. Furthermore, if they are sensible, caring and appreciative, they should have the common sense that when they migrate to a country, most of them not being naturalized citizens, they should conduct themselves appropriately and also try to obtain a job.
I do not blame Dominicans if they are upset about these unruly people and the increased murder rate, the result of lack of love and peace. Some of them are giving Dominica and nationals a bad name.
Idleness is the devil’s playground. Satan finds some mischief for idle hands to do.
I hope the government takes note.

They primarily need the blessing and grace of God. Some of them do not set foot in a church. They live from day to day, going about, hanging out everywhere and they will never consider getting up on a Sunday and going to church.
As Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and rnder unto God the things that are God’s.
Some of them who migrated to Dominica cannot read or write. They are not intellectually inclined. Not unless the government forces it on them, do you think that they will be interested in an anger management course?
You could be angry. I could be angry. Anyone can be angry. Is this a reason to take a cutlass or any other weapon to bludgeon another, injure and murder him? This is where they went wrong. There is no excuse. If they kept fruitfully busy they would not have found themselves in that dilemma with one dead and the other, no doubt seriously injured. He has gone to his eternal judgment. At the same time it is a sad case. For those who murder and cause a murder, let the punishment fit the crime.

Doc.love: Do you think this may only happen in Dominica? I reside in Canada and it is bad. Those who reside in the US and UK will echo the same.
For the past three weeks if not more the Canadian Media has been covering government expenditure and wastage. I can tell you it is frustrating to have to listen to this and to read about it. Canadians would like to get some of that money i their h nds. :) It is not the first time this has happened. It is the umpteenth time and may recur in the future.
Billions of dollars wasted in various ways when some people are sleeping on the streets and some others are in dire need of money for their livelihood. We have taxes coming out of our ears, so-to-speak. :)
Let me further inform you, these three levels of governments in Canada in each province do not build free housing. Rent is not free for even those on welfare. The government has not constructed a building for the poor since probably 20 years or more ago. Some of them are run-down because of the negligence of the buildings management and their non-caring attitude, taking the money for themselves and not repairing the especially inner buildings. The government does not build. Business people build and through borrowing from financial institutions or from their money reserves.
Taxpayers in Canada do not get freebees. They have to work for what they want. Those who are pensionable it is through their hard-earned dollars and yet they do not receive the same amount of income as when they were employed.
People in Dominica reside in a tropical country. Those who migrated to D/ca should know why, for what reason they did. Some of them prefer being idle and live a leisurely life. Therefore, when you consider making such a statement, think of especially the hardworking people in Dominica.
It is not a criticism of the government. However, the government should appoint a minister to oversee those people and to encourage them to do something for their livelihood. They should not be living idly. People who are non-nationals should not migrate to Dominica and just sit around, do nothing and depend on the government. Otherwise, deport them back to their country especially when they cause trouble as also when they injure and commit murder. There are many volunteers from all over the world who are helping out in Haiti to make it a better place for its nationals. Why would they want to remain in Dominica and unemployed?
Did you consider that some of them who migrated to Dominica may have been non-law abiding in their country? Little or nothing does the government and nationals know about them. These last thoughts just crossed my mind.

SORRY for the typographical mistakes. I am a Dominican, and I am sad, and hurting, for my country. People make a country, not the land itself. Sometimes I cry, and pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming about what I am seeing and hearing IN DOMINICA. No matter how much we have, if we have no peace, we enjoy NOTHING!

  21. HELP

With 70,000.00 people on an island, every week there is either someone killed or crippled. Let the Government turn a blind eye, and let the society cover up and don’t say nothing. Sooner or later, the criminals will turn on us and the Government. Do the Dominican pubic know what LAWLESSNESS means? Those of us who do not know the meaning, please look it up.

I am working so hard, for my daily bread, and every minute I have to watch my back in the market, grocery store, on the street, even in my own home? Do u know what kind of stress that put on some ones HEART, when someone is always afraid?
Even the HOLY BIBLE SAYS ‘FARE BRINGS TORMENT.
We will have criminals running the country and a lot of us will die from heart attacks, or strokes.

Too much tension in the country. This is not the way to live in a Civilized country, much less an Island called ‘NATURE ISLAND’

Lord, if we are blind for us to not see what is happening in Dominica, please open our eyes. If we cannot understand, please open our understanding. We need help, and Lord we need it now. Later will be grater, it might be too late. We need people coming to Dominica to build it, not people running away due to fare, unhealthy, and deadly situations happing in Dominica.

Everywhere have their share of crime. But we cannot afford it financially, and by loosing future generations. Who is paying for those medical bills, for those who survive those gun shots, stab wounds, illegal drug dependents etc. Especially those young people who are not contributing nothing constructive or positive to society. I am saying boldly, we cannot afford all these madness in DOMINICA.

People must really learn to live in peace with one another and avoid conflicts. Note what lack of peace contributes to, one is dead and the other is in the hospital. It is so sad.
We would think that lack of peace could only exist between nations but lack of peace exists between neighbors, relatives and friends. It is sad that an altercation could culminate into injury and death. This should never be.
A family is now mourning the loss of their loved one. Another one is in distress over their injured loved one who will be facing the brunt of the Law. If only (too late) they had curbed their anger and temper, all this could have been avoided.
My heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your loved one. God’s consolation be with you.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen!

It is important to note that there is no evidence or statistics proving that the death penalty results in a reduction of the crime rate. Places like Washington DC and Baltimore have reduced their crime rates significantly over the past few years. The death penalty does not exist in those areas.
Finding ways to educate our people such that they have compassion, respect for each other and a sense of spirituality will go a long way. Our young people need more to live for. If you have something to look forward to, and you are engaged attaining a goal of some sort, you will probably find it easier to turn the other cheek and stay away from situations that may result in loss of life.

    June 22, 2013

I saw the video on facebook of the stabbing among school children in Jamaica on Wednesday afternoon. It is alleged that the girls were fighting over a man/boy. You might say “ha ha the usual”. But there is a lesson for us.

You see situations blow over, people change, things change and life goes on. But in a moment of anger we do not see beyond the immediate situation, the tendency is to act on the feeling and when things turn fatal we realize it was not called for. Maybe just walking away will work -ignore the situation. If you have an anger management problem- seek help-or find something positive to channel your energies into.

We have a number of counsellors on the island why not hold a series of conflict resolution and anger management seminars around the island in our schools and communities-particularly for our youth who are out of school most of whom are high school drop outs and they are frustrated.

And I think the police should start responding to reports of harrassment. Stop saying “oh is family business etc…” because we see those things turing fatal these days. If people know they can be dealt by the police for mere harrassment we will have less of those incidents and a more secure society.

I hope this will be the last of its kind for the year at least.

My sympathies to all those affected.

Knowing Christ as Savior and Lord is the cure for these violence. But sad to say, as the people of old.

“We will not have this MAN rule over us.”

Here in the U.S.A.in 1962 the supreme court banned prayer and bible reading in public schools.1973 the same court legalized abortion on demand.
It is illegal to destroy turtle eggs, but if a 13 year old girl is pregnant, she can enter any drug store without her parents consent, and buy pile to kill the baby in the womb.
Last year (2012)in 365 days, Planned Parenthood killed over 330,000 babies through abortion.
A few weeks ago president Obama addressed their annual convention as guest speaker, and end his speech by saying.
“There are those who want to shut it down but you are going nowhere, GOD BLESS YOU.”

No wonder since no prayer no bible is permitted. The the children are coming to school with their guns.

Every afternoon that man has a white van full of school children from all the schools in the Grand Bay area all the way to Belle Vue bringing them to Geneva to teach them skills and how not to take drugs. He is targeting the very young children. And I am just realizing that is quite some time that those kind of killing is not from the Grand Bay community. Take a page from Bonti Liverpool’s book, communities and schools.

A 20 yr old trying to tackle a 34 yr old man? Those rap music and BETv making those young boys feel that they’re some kind of G but they don’t realize that tv is just entertainment and that every action has a consequence.

Just because them little boys come in your face playing bad and u choose to ignore them they think that you afraid of them but it’s just experience and maturity that makes you act otherwise. We know their mothers and fathers and we ourselves have children so we show a level of restraint. But the question is for how long can we as big men tolerate them little pretend roadside gangstas?

If the police don’t step in and show zero tolerance for these young fools it has been openly spoken about that some vigilantee moves are on the cards to deal with the situation.

Young people of Dominica, old people of Dominica, Dominicans from all walks of life, seize and settle with the violence please. These days people blood not even close to their skin as we would say in local palance, it’s on their skin. There are no winners in those situations. As for this ignorance being in a better place and soldier, those of you uttering this garbage everytime a young person dies stop it. We are loosing our future generations, we are loosing our best productive years. There is no reason for this. Dead or languishing in prison is nothing to be proud of.

Just Wednesday gone one 14 girl year old stabbed another 14 year old girl to death right after school in Jamaica. They were both in uniform and surrounded by scores of their own peers who did not seem to understand the gravity of the situation while they watched one of their own bleed to death. It was pure excitement for some.

(Sarcastically) We are getting there DA just let the ignorance continue. Soon another life will mean nothing to us- I don’t like you, CHAP! of goes your neck- you trouble me or my man, CHUKE! knife in your chest.

Tell me what kind of future you can have after you take someone’s life? And what kind of nation are we building?

I don’t think anybody won in that fight.

Society have to bring back capital punishment. It is obvious now that the country has no or little deterent to violent crime.

We can either do something about it or accept things as they are, to the degredation of society.

    • Honesty
      June 23, 2013

What you talking about capital punishment; In a case like this. With the incident that took place you asking for capital punishment. You need to do your investigation properly. This is a clear sign of self defense. So you would stand there and let someone cut you death with a cutlass. Oh please let us be real, you and I both know you would have defended yourself: and likewise the man did the same. We need to think before we talk; I not saying NO to CAPITAL punishment but in this case there is NO need to mention capital punishment.

    • Stealth Critique

This particular incident would be unlikely to qualify for capital punishment due to the nature of it.

Sadly, it is not as it was in those days. Gone are the good old days and safe ones. Times have changed and so do some hearts. All of us feel that it will get worse if those types of hearts do not change for the better.
One would expect consistent murders in a big country where the population is greater or those other countries where murders are prevalent. Surely not in Dominica.
What has happened? Some people no longer have love in their hearts and concern for the protection of human life. Lord, please put a hand!

There is a kind of roughness, crass way of seeing and dealing with situations in DA that still have me wondering. Is there any nuance and sophisticated thinking left in our society? Dominicans, no matter their station in society, display a sort of badness that can only lead to such outcomes.

Our lives may end before the end. Christians should know that a lot more and worse will happen before the end of time. The Lord wants us to live a godly, happy and peaceful life and accord others the same, their due rights. This is a way of peace which leads to eternal salvation. In the meantime, our love for one another and perseverance in the faith are being tried as God looks on and takes note of our actions – thoughts, words and deeds.

based on comments made by eye witnesses , this appears to be a case of self defense. it is alleged that Jasmine was a know trouble maker and was always in trouble with the law, while Don has never been in police custody. Too often we see our people adopt a do or die mentality and its crippling our society. People should learn to walk away from trouble more often.

Bad and sad for DA. I don’t care whether you believe or not; if we do not pray and ask for God’s help, this country is in serious trouble. I have a 20 year old son in college and working and a 34 year old brother, gainfully employed. I don’t get this senseless, knife and cutlass issue. 2 lost lives, 1 has a second chance. If this was self-defense then so be it. Don Hilton Bobb defended himself. I was not there but violence is not the answer. For willful murder, I’m for the death penalty, an eye for an eye.

………………. I for one believe in capital punishment…but not in this case…Don Boobb was released from PMH and currently in police custody. Imagine having a head wound and you cannot rest comfortable and your stuck in the smelling police cell in Roseau, if you have a headache do they believe you. Do they have compassion at this time when it is no fault of yours your in such a position? I do hope he getting bail tomorrow so he can rest.

      June 22, 2013

Ethnic is a socially defined category based on common cultural heritage, shared ancestry, history, homeland, language or dialect. So You want to do an “ethnic cleansing” of certain young men, which means you want to kill young Dominican men. Ethnic has nothing to do with someone that rapes, kills, murders, does drugs, burglaries or puts burdens on the state. Please, please before you write something so intense, learn the meaning of the words you are writing!

Only an unlearnt person can make such a horrific suggestion. Mercy on us in Dominica. Why is our society so violent? We were told our fortunes would change after the mountains were renamed. I trust we can all see that it will take more than this to bring about the more sensible society we desire to have. Too many of our young men are dying violently. Too much blood is being spilled in the land. Lord help us, we need You.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_cleansing

Ethnic cleansing (compare Serbo-Croatian etničko čišćenje[1]) is the process or policy of eliminating unwanted ethnic or religious groups by deportation, forcible displacement, mass murder, or by threats of such acts, with the intent of creating a territory inhabited by people of a homogeneous or pure ethnicity, religion, culture, and history. Ethnic cleansing usually involves attempts to remove physical and cultural evidence of the targeted group in the territory through the destruction of homes, social centers, farms, and infrastructure, and by the desecration of monuments, cemeteries, and places of worship.

In this case it was not first degree murder, as one can see the perpetrator of the manslaughter received wounds to his head. Thus, the death sentence does not apply. I agree with you though about the plight of the victim and other issues you raised.

The Dominican government should not be concerned about Amnesty Int’l., and Human Rights, etc. In those countries where they predominantly operate, the situation is worse. Some of those countries I will never travel to. This has not prevented some people from harming and fatally wounding their fellowmen.
Dominica is governed by Dominica Laws and this is what the DA government should concern itself about. Bring back the death penalty or exercise it as fitting. This could probably deter those people from as much as harming others who are especially their relatives/friends, people whom they know.
