Marpin fires its general manager

marpin-logoThe board of Directors of Marpin 2k4, headed by Francis Emmanuel, has dismissed the company’s General Manager, Perickson Isidore.

Reports are that he was given walking papers late today.

Isidore’s dismissal comes in the wake of a decision on Friday morning, by Dominica Electricity Services, DOMLEC, to disconnect its service to the financially strapped company for non-payment of arrears in excess of $1 million.

Sources told DNO that the plug was pulled on Friday morning and more offices could be plunged into darkness soon.

The action followed failure by the company to pay what  Dominica News Online understands is a whopping $1.7 million electricity bill to DOMLEC.

Sources with knowledge of the matter told DNO that the company has been struggling to keep its financial commitment to the power company.

The source said a promissory note to have the bill paid was signed earlier this year but several months later, it remains unsettled.

Isidore told DNO on Friday morning that he was in a meeting and could not comment.

Isidore’s dismissal notwithstanding, it is unknown at this point how much of an effect DOMLEC’s action has had on the company’s operations. DNO understands that since the disconnection, the company’s operations at Morne Daniel has been powered by a generator.

We’ve also learnt that although Marpin 2k4 has since made a payment to DOMLEC, it has not been sufficient to warrant a re-connection and the company has been given fourteen days to rectify the situation in order to avoid disconnection at its Roseau headquarters.

Marpin 2K4’s financial problems came to the fore in February this year when a number of employees were given letters of redundancy. They were recalled one week later after the company decided to withdraw the redundancy letters because of its failure to give the employees’ union sufficient notice of its action to make them redundant. However, questions persisted about the company’s financial health and its ability to continue with business as usual.

Domlec is ‘The’ 800 pound Gorilla. Skeritt needs to ask Maduro/Venezuela for help to do that which they do best: Nationalize that beast!

I’m not saying Mapin didn’t run up the bill but in Dominica a company runs up that size bill in 3 months or less because the rates are so exhorbitant, prohibitive, just ask the Gov’t or Garraway hotel, they each owe the Beast Domlec millions incurred in just a few months. This proves Domlec is very very bad for business. Nationalize that beast!

The PM need to take some of the campaign money and pay domlec off. It’s not right for the PM to be giving money out like he has a big garden of money trees when the country is sinking. There are other ways to help the country Mr PM, what about jobs did you think of that piece of the puzzle? One day the sickness that is eating our banana tress and our citrus trees will one day take over your money trees, do us Dominicans a favor please and step down so that Lenox can bring sunshine back to us after having years of dark clouds. Thanks in advance PM make all Dominicans proud and step down.

why does the prime minister have to step down so Lennox can do his job? why doesn’t Lennox address those issues now… he doesn’t have to be Prime minister to solve problems.

      • December 2, 2013

Could Skerrit have solved them before becoming prime minister? He did not even own a scouter much more to pay. People are forgetting that the PM did not have nothing before he became PM. If he was anywhere else he would be investigated with all he is doing. Only in Dominica people in authority can bribe people to cover up their bobols.

Domlec will take over Marpin and it will end up being majority owned by foreigners…..remember that Domlec was sold to a Bajan company supposedly without the knowledge of our government….RIGHT UNDER THEIR NOSES!! As to the free coverage of the Miss World contest….the PM should never have done that unless he (the government) was going to pay the full cost of the coverage themselves! So this should be a lesson to all those who glorify the PM as the only and best solution to everything….the man with all the answers! They should realise from this how short sighted his actions can be all to secure popularity and what the results of that short sightedness can be!!! Look and learn!!!

when you are running a country the ultimate blame for any failure falls on the PM. In the USA and Europe their economy is driven by their large private sector, yet when the economy fails their leaders are the ones who get the ticket.

The ability to take responsibility for what happens within your watch is the duty of any effective leader. If u want to shirk from that call then its better to leave the office for those who have the testicular fortitude to do so.

    • December 2, 2013

They should pay for the service that was granted. That would have assisted Marpin in paying the bill that they are owing. They have to get money now to do so. Therefore, that money would definitely help them. Instead, they are using tax payers money to buy votes.

The Board should all resign after they send the Manager home. They sat their meeting after meeting. They didn’t take any action to remedy this situation. That bill could not have come so high during the last Manager’s tenure. It was there before. Were they reviewing the financial statements of the company when they meet? Or maybe they were more interested in the food at the meeting. That is what Board’s in Dominica after now. The food, the food the food. They all hungry.

I would sue Marpin bigtime. They do not have sufficient grounds to fire the man if its for the Domlec issue. Where is Mr Maude? He needs to answer some questions. The CEO and Board of Directors of Marpin are to blame. Isisdore was just trying his best to put Marpin on a sound footing again. Watch that eh people. Marpin is going top lose subscriber for firing Isidore. That was wrong move. People go to SAT. Board of Directors and CEO just like Manager to fix up their dirty work of the past. 29. November 30, 2013

Well since this new marpin is not responsible for the debt of the old marpin, the manager may have signed the promissory note without the board knowing. Then that put the new marpin in a very precarious position because Domlec can now take action on the new marpin. This is just my assumption.

    • J.A.G.O.T.S
      December 2, 2013

Your assumptions are incorrect. Marpin 2K4 Ltd did not incur or took over debts of Marpin Telecoms & Broadcasting Co. Ltd when the sale was done. This debt been incurring over the last 3 to 4 years.

The accounting department maintains the account, however, when it is time to pay some manager, or the head of Marpin dictates who get paid, and when!

Nevertheless, if the balance in the company’s bank account is zero; the manager, nor the head accountant cannot issue any payment, not unless they are into writing rubber cheque’s.

What goes around comes around. I will not be surprised when Marpin goes into bankruptcy, and goes out of business prominently!

That is what happens when we rob people of their hard earned labor and dreams. Ron Abraham dreamed of building his Television Station in our country, the same as I dreamed of the same thing, the only difference my dream was to build a Radio & Television complex, providing free Television viewing, the same as free Radio broadcast, and make my profit by Radio, and Television Comercials.

When I told my friend Ron of my plans in England in 1976, he advised me to go to our country, and build a pay Television Station, I argued with the man that ” our people doh have de money to pay for Cable Television.”

Ron gave me a firm look, and said Francisco if I was you, I would go to Dominica, and build a Cable Television Station, he was giving me his dream as far as I am concerned. The night after the party, I left for Germany, I did not see nor talk to Ron for a number of years, until a woman both of us knew in Essex England came to visit with me here in Los Angeles.

I ask here how is Ron the rest of people in our circle doing, she immediately told me Ron went home he is in Dominica, and is operating a Television Station there: the rest is history.

After all the man’s hard work, Dominicans had to find a way to steal, that Station from out under Ron; so what goes around must come around; Marpin must fail, it will eventually disappear into oblivion,

When they were looking for a buyer for that station, I was told a relative from the village of Marigot tended a bid on the station, his bid was never considered, could it be it is because he is from the Village of Marigot?

I believe so; it is inevitable, that station must fail. Give it back to its rightful owner, at least when Ron owned it the bills were paid!

And with Ron at the Apex, the Station will once again become a success.

Welcome to the real world labour power. It is not a matter of scape goat. Life is just what it is at times. Mayb that was a way of just letting go an employee that they did not want anymore. What happens when the truth come out? Is he going to get his job back? Life goes on. He just needs to move on… Sometimes we just have to leave things alone. Also, if u know what they did why don’t u let us know? My adviceto u is check yurself, mayb u are next , if u said u all work together.so stop worrying about things that we in life have no control over. Things happen for reasons… Only god knows…

Escape goat ? Why not an escape fowl or an escape sheep ?

Unless you meant scape goat :-)

The power of the internet. Enabling generations of people who cannot spell or type to share it boldfacedly with the world.

Escape goat?? Really? Is this a goat which has escaped or is it a goat which is in the process of escaping? Why don’t you just restrict yourself to words that you already know, or barring that avail yourself of a dictionary?

They sit by and let him run up all the debt now is the little local boy they taking foot on! And the PM make Marpin bring the Miss World for free! The money from pay per view of the event could go towards that bill!

      • November 30, 2013

This PM has no knowledge of how to make a business or country profitable. All he and his cabal are looking for is opportunities where they can get richer and own more and more property.

The event was free to the public sir. The gov’t decided to pay for it themselves instead of viewers covering the bill. So they (Marpin) did not carry it for free.

But what could Perickson do? The chairman of Marpin is a close associate of the P.M. so he had to do as instructed. P.M. boosted his popularity but now you pointing your finger at mr. Isidore?

DOMINICANS WE MUST BE CAREFUL ABOUT UNFOUNDED STATEMENTS JUST BECAUSE U ARE HIDING BEHIND DNO . PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT AND HOW MUCH MONEY DO U THINK PAY PER VIEW WOULD HAVE CONTRIBUTION BY THE PUBLIC , THAT SMALL SUM WOULD NOT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE

Bringing the Miss World for free has NOTHING to do with that LARGE debt. That debt was LINGERING for a long time.

WHEN WILL YOU ALL STOP BLAMING ROOSEVELT FOR EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG IN DOMINICA?

The Miss world was nor for free, the subscribers for marpin and marpin did not pay for it. The government of Dominica paid for it. You would not receive it if it was not paid for.

Lololol. The PM promised to meet part of the cost. Nothing was in writing and nothing was signed. To date no payment has been made by the government to cover that bill. And this just shows that Mr Isidore was manager but had no teeth.

The company had already made arrangements to bring the show, remember it was at the last minute Mrs PM posted on her facebook that it would be brought for free. At the time Marpin was in the process of collecting payments from customers who wanted to view it pay per view. I was one of those who got my money back after the announcement was made.
