McIntyre says government will tackle non-communicable diseases head-on

Dr McIntyre

Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Valley Constituency, Dr. Irving McIntyre has announced that the government will appoint a coordinator to handle the issue of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) “head-on”.

He made the announcement while addressing a Dominica Labour Party (DLP) campaign rally held in Cochrane on Sunday.

NCDs including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, chronic lung disease, high blood pressure, and mental disorders are said to be the leading causes of death in Dominica.

“We have to be honest, we have the burden of chronic non-communicable Diseases, it’s not unique to Dominica, it’s all of the region, all over the world and we are going to tackle it head-on,” Dr. McIntyre said. “We are going to handle this head-on to the extent that we are even appointing a coordinator.”

He continued, “That is how serious we take these things and that is the planning the Labour party government brings to things. We see it coming, we are not going to sit down, we are not sleeping on ourselves.”

He said the DLP don’t run away from their challenges.

Meanwhile, Dr. McIntyre revealed that the country’s life expectancy has gone up.

“When you look at what we’ve done, our life expectancy has gone up, so for instance, in maternal mortality over the past five years there has not been one maternal mortality case in Dominica,” he explained.

He revealed that according to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), that target was supposed to be reached in 2030, but “We reached that target five years ago.”

“This is your country, this is why you have to be proud of your government and your country,” he stated. “You can walk with your head high.”

Dr. McIntyre went on to state that Dominica is part of six countries certified that have achieved the elimination of Mother-to-Child transmission of HIV.

He also said that neonatal mortality is down to 50% from where it was five years ago.

“Constant progress, we keep making,” Dr. McIntyre stated.

He added, “If you talk about infant mortality, we are down 40% compared to two years ago.”

The DLP don’t run away from their challenges, he says. What exactly has the DLP achieved in the health sector since they came to power?? Nothing, absolutely nothings. The health service in our country is worse than ever. He will tell us about that new China hospital as an achievement. But isn’t it the truth that most people that are admitted never come out alive again. So Minister of Health, stop your propaganda and tell us exactly how you are planning to tackle those issues? I guess, as usual, it’s only words but never action.

Dr McIntyre who has been the country’s health minister for the last 3 years now says that they will “appoint a coordinator to handle the issue of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) “head-on”. This begs the question, for the last 3 years have they been handling it “foot-off”???

“government will tackle non-communicable diseases head-on” Haha, sure, so you mean to tell me you all are going to increase the taxes and import duties on certain foods, instead of creating an economic environment where the average citizen can thrive thus increasing their living standards which will trickle down to their health?

he stated. “You can walk with your head high.”
No, I must walk with my head down in Roseau with all those holes, poo poo (human and animal btw) and piece of sidewalk you all have people scrambling to climb over

I’m telling you that of all the comments I’ve read criticizing the govt efforts (or lack of) the one that I always end up liking, addresses my pet peeve about my island home. No matter who is running the country, the issue of the bad or lack of sidewalks, the open gutters, dog poo etc continues. And yes, you gotta walk head down or you could walk in poo, slip on garbage or at worst break a leg on uneven sidewalks or jumping big gutters (looking at you lagon) to escape breaking something if you fall in. I’ll vote for whoever fix those probs pronto!
