Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidate for the Roseau Valley constituency, Dr. Irvin McIntyre has said that on completion of the $40 million China/Dominica Friendship Hospital, there will be a state-of- the-art, modernized hospital service ‘comparable to those anywhere in the developed countries.’
McIntyre made the announcement while addressing the launching ceremony of DLP candidate for the Roseau South Constituency, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite held at the Newtown Savannah on Sunday.
He mentioned the new HIFU [High Intensity Focus Ultrasound] machine which was the subject of some public discussion after prime minister Skerrit first spoke about it recently.
“This is just a machine that can manage non-invasively, the surgical cancer and non-cancer situations,” Dr. McIntyre stated. “We don’t have to cut anymore that is why we have the HIFU machine.”
McIntyre added that there is also an MRI machine, “and thirdly, we are getting a new state-of-the-art new CT Scan machine with 160 slices [offers a larger imaging area] compared to the 60 slice machine that we presently have.”
He said there will also be a PCR machine and a Polymerase Chain Reaction machine will help in the diagnosis of dengue and leptospirosis.
“In the past we would have to send samples all the way to Trinidad and wait for two weeks to get the results. We are going to have this machine at our hospital where we can diagnose those things right there and not wait for results from Trinidad in two weeks’ time,” Dr. McIntyre stated.
He said the first phase of the new hospital will be handed over this month.
“The first phase is going to be handed over to us this month and this first phase includes the Accident and Emergency Department, the administration, radiology, laboratory and the diagnostic outpatient department,” he said.
Recently, members of cabinet and the media visited the project site of the hospital.
The China/Dominica Friendship Hospital is being funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

He stated that he has interacted with several Ministers of government and he was dumbfounded to discover how very little many of these people know. Carefully contemplate on the state of affairs in Dominica. Roseau, the main town, is an embarrassment. It is an eyesore plus odorous. Anyone with a serious illness or injury has to be shipped , sorry, flown overseas for medical attention. Jobs are as scarce as water in the Sahara Desert. To get to this island from long distance is like solving a complex jigsaw puzzle. Dominica cannot host the Carifta Games nor any international sporting events, the facilities are absent. Thus, the young people are being deprived of valuable entertainment and a chance of being inspired. McIntyre ‘s only goal is to get elected, strictly about self-interest. Getting elected for him is like winning the lotto.

I could not have said it better myself. I am surprised and dismayed by the level of mediocrity that exist on island. Take our minimum wage for example which is the lowest in the Eastern Caribbean. You cannot have a decent conversation with people on the ground, because of a high level of ignorance.

Skerrit told them he flies his children out for medical attention whey they are sick, but yet still they are yelling five more years. Sad.
McIntyre is overselling the functions of the HIFU machine. It’s definitely not a panacea for most health or cancer illnesses as being insinuated by this deceptive character. It’s the same tired, overused promises that they are recycling ever election cycle. How many times have this shady administration promised international airport, geothermal energy, job opportunities, etcetera. Too many unaccomplished too little action. They, the Skerrit-led DLP government needs to pack up and leave the government in more capable hands. Look at the calibre of candidates on Team Dominica, all of exceptional ability and eminently qualified for the job that lies ahead.
Politicians are very good at inflating promises and capabilities. Don’t forget a politician had promised to build a shield over the USA to protect it from missiles. They is no limit to the fallacies that politicians are willing to articulate; especially when they believe people will agree with them.
Besides the new Chinese funded and built hospital isn’t there anything else that Mcintyre could divulge to help improve the health of the population? The primary purpose of health interventions is to help keep the populace healthy with the use of the hospital as a last resource. It sounds like the government thinks that having a modern well-equipped hospital is all that is required. In addition, those who work in the health sector are paramount and need to be treated properly to get the sector to work effectively. Please address all issues.

Thank God because of our last name we were all able to become professionals in life. I am a medical doctor and not a politician. But my brother went into politics and the man screwed up himself. I have no doubt that he is jail bound and not only that, but my last name will be messed up. So my friends, I have to try to help my brother out. So like my brother who was paid to run a race and paid to run from investigation, I must admit that I was paid a very large sum of money to run a race. For the sake of my brother who found himself in trouble, I was prepared to run for free just to help him out. But the athletic club offered me so much money that I couldn’t resist. So here am I running a race I never planned to run. So expect me to tell lies upon lies upon lies because that’s the nature of my athletics club.

I did not know that Irvin MacIntire is now our purported Minister of Health. Dr. Darroux still holds this position and should have covered this subject but it would appear that he has already been thrown to the dogs. Not even a semblance of respect from Roosevelt Skerrit, never mind good manners. What I want to touch upon is that all these machines can not function to the optimum effect without the input of dedicated and skilled personnel, backed by an effective administration. Can we expect the P.M. to allow his family to be treated at this new facility with all these wonderful machines? I would love to hear him confirm this because if he has no confidence in these new facilities, why should I or the populace of Dominica?
