Media must help keep government honest

Munroe

Caribbean media practitioners have been challenged to expand their role as social advocates and demand accountability from governments in the face of increasing evidence of corruption.

Former political activist and Professor Trevor Munroe said journalists had a responsibility to “confirm, to qualify or to contradict with evidence and analysis the people’s perception that corruption is rampant in high places”.

Available evidence suggests that Caribbean people are getting tired of corruption in high places and of economic distress, which accompanies the corrupt use of resources needed for development,” Munroe said. He cited evidence documented in the 2010 report of the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP).

Most intelligent people support the view of professor Munroe except those who reap the benefit for their staunch support of the government. Supporters which include the ones who believe truth doesn’t matter, Lennox is not a journalist, madness going on at the electoral commission and so on. There are also the supporters who just say we love our P.M because they expect a handout, some plywood or something.
I wonder what they have to say now.
Lennox, Matt, Angelo keep up your good work.

I am pleased with this article, Professor Trevor Munroe has sent a very clear message to all media practitioners including the lilly-livered ones in Dominica. When they follow the politicians (especially those in office) they must ask them questions on the speeches which were written for them. Deal with the issues, ask challenging questions to the thin-skinned politicians. they are accountable to the governed. The media here seem not to know its responsibilities. Lazy journalism seems to be the order of the day. If you think that this is some joke, lets look at two of our mainstreamed media houses: DBS and Marpin. DBS (with is board and lame, outdated chairman) is a poor excuse for a national radio station, the news has no depth, contains no research and the diction of some of the readers really need some serious work – sometimes it is embarrassing. If one did not catch Marpin news, they missed nothing, another example of lazy journalism and short changing the Dominican public. Our media people here will not be able to compete in the civilized world with this attitude. Dominica’s media needs to wake up from its politically induced slumber and get with the program so that Dominica could be at a HIGHER LEVEL!! It is my hope that this article will strike a nerve of awakening among our media practitioners.

I really hope Dominicans are taking note of this because when Lennox Linton did his investigation and so on to get to the truth of and about the Pinard Burns saga he was asked by the Court who asked him to investigate and who asked him to do accountancy for the same as he was not qualified to do such, so until the Courts fall in line so as to allow whatever work it takes to find the truth as work for finding truth then we will have a more honest Country and a more honest Government.

THIS IS A VERY COMPREHENSIVE REPORT AND IS VERY FITTING IN OUR DOIMINICAN SOCIETY TODAY.BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HEARD ANY OF THE MAIN MEDIA AND OR REPORTERS QUESTIONED THE P.M,MINISTERS, PASTORS, PRIESTS,SCHOOL PRICIPALS ABOUT ALL THE ALLEGATIONS THAT ARE BEING MADE AGAINST THEM. “WHY IS THIS SO?”
IN SMALL COUNTRIES LIKE OURS IT IS EVEN MORE PRUDENT THAT WE HOLD OUR GOV’T TO ANSWER QUESTIONS BECAUSE OF OUR FRAGILE ECONOMY. DOMINICANS ARE TAKING THESE STATEMENTS FOR A JOKE BUT, AS WE HAVE SEEN IN MANY BIG COUNTRIES WITH FAILING ECONOMIES, IT IS EVEN EASIER FOR US TO GO DOWN. AS ONE CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER ONCE SAID” IT IS WRONG NOT TO ASK QUESTIONS.”
SO I AM CALLING ON ALL THE MEDIA IN Da TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND ASK QUESTIONS OUR LEADERS IN ALL CATETIGORIES OF OUR SOCIETY. LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY CAN’T JUST DO WRONG AND NO ONE WILL SEEM TO PAY ATTENTION.

I agree that the press is supposed to be the mouth piece and guardian of the people. The press have been trying to enlighten the Dominican public especially Matt Peltier and Lennox Linton but what we see happening is an attempt by the Government to suppress the media. And the reason is they do not want to public to know what is happening.
When you begin to see Governments attempting to censure the press, it only leaves us with one conclusion; corruption is being concealed and democracy is under threat.
