Moroccan Hotel among accommodations to house Vincentians who may have to be evacuated

The Moroccan Hotel in Portsmouth

The Moroccan Hotel as well as several other apartment complexes in the second town of Portsmouth have been identified to house residents of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines if the current activity at the La Soufriere Volcano intensifies.

Though Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit is hoping that the activity in the volcano does not go beyond its current state, he said that he’s been in contact with the sister island’s Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, and has offered assistance on behalf of the Government and people of Dominica.

“We are prepared to welcome a number of them. As a matter of fact, we have identified the Moroccan hotel where we can house them as well as other facilities and a number of apartment building that we have at Picard as a possible accommodation that the treasury of Dominica would underwrite the cost associated with hosting anyone from Saint Vincent who has to be evacuated from that particular locality,” Skerrit disclosed.

Over the past few months, Vincentians have been warned to be on alert after the volcano, which was last active in 1979, causing two deaths, has begun acting up once again. The most devastating eruption of that volcano occurred in 1902 and claimed the lives of 1680 people.

So far, the leaders from St Lucia and the British Virgin Islands have given the assurance that their country would be willing to take residents and offer assistance if the volcano forces them to leave their homes.

According to Dominica’s Prime Minister, “Saint Vincent is a long-standing friend of Dominica…we have a very strong bilateral relations with Saint Vincent and whatever affects Saint Vincent affects Dominica, whatever benefits Saint Vincent benefits Dominica and vice versa,” he expressed. “So we stand in absolute and total solidarity with the government and people of Saint Vincent during this difficult time.”

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines just last Wednesday warned residents of communities near the La Soufriere volcano to heighten their preparedness if it becomes necessary for them to evacuate at short notice.

The warning from NEMO came as scientists have noted a change in seismic activity associated with the ongoing effusive eruption of the volcano.

On 29th December 2020, the alert level for the La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was elevated to Orange because of increased activity at the site.

Between 6.3o am and 4.pm on Monday 5th April, close to 500 earthquakes were recorded  at the La Soufriere volcano.

These latest Volcano-Tectonic earthquakes were also much more intense compared to those which occurred during the period March 23-25 and contained many more small earthquakes, with an average rate of about 50 earthquakes per hour compared with 1.5 per hour in March, according to media reports from Saint Vincent.

NEMO said the current swarm of Volcano-Tectonic earthquakes have been located at a depth about 6 km below the summit of the La Soufrière Volcano.

This is slightly deeper than those recorded between March 23 and 25, 2021 which were located at depths from 3 to 5 km below the summit. (Earlier estimates of these swarms were revised from 10 km to 3 to 5 km).

But while NEMO is encouraging residents in the Red and Orange Volcanic Hazard Zone to increase their preparedness, it said that the alert level remains at “Orange” and no evacuation order or notice has yet been given.

NEMO is also encouraging residents especially persons living in communities close to the volcano to be prepared in the event that it becomes necessary to evacuate at short notice.

I do not understand why Roosevelt and his following flock of sheep in his cabal keep referring to that condemned place as “the Moroccan Hotel when the Moroccans who were spending their money left it and ran a long time ago when they found out Roosevelt, Ian and the rest were all full of fart!

The site on which they were building that thing is noted sinking grounds.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha!

Will the people from St. Vincent jump out of the frying pan into the fire?

Are they going to go to bed one night only to find themselves sinking into Quick-sand?

Mr. Dog: In the first place Roosevelt is not a medical doctor as you believe; some scoundrels go out and buy honorary degree so that people can call them doctor!

I know a man name scoundrel corrupted Roosevelt who bought two honorary degrees from non-accredited universities: the corrupted said one day; that ninety (90%) percent of people who say they are sick; it’s all in their mine!
      Playing doctor!

The corrupted crook is also a knight you know!

The Knight is so corrupted he installed two fire place in his house; how mentally ill is your corrupted friend to sit in front of two fire place on a tropical island called Dominica where the temperature runs between 70 and 90 degrees year round with a biometric pressure ranging between 29 and 30.

We do not experience winter in the Caribbean; but only in Roosevelt house.

Note: the biometric pressure  is the amount of force at any point on the earth’s surface caused by the weight of the air!

Hmm-mmm. While this a wonderful gesture to provide assistance to a fellow Windward Island in need, and we will forever be grateful for the support we received from the Caribbean and the world, a question still needs to be asked? Is that a reward for Ralph Gonsalves supporting the sending of RSS troops to quell the movement towards Dominica’s democratic elections?

Maybe Skerrit them should just put them in those empty apartments at Picard and have them to attend some daily sessions at the Ross University campus so Ian, Reggie Skerrit and others could tell those laborites that the new Ross has finally come. And you know those laborites would believe them

If that ever happens expect to see a bill of how many millions to be paid by CBi funds. But we already know where that money would go. I don’t believe anything that Roosevelt Skerrit and Emmanuel Nathan says or is part of. All these guys can do is fix washing machines

Dr² Roosevelt Skerrit suffers from an acute case of low self esteem. To try to overcome this profound problem he overcompensates to impress foreigners.

He is the least educated prime minister in the OECS yet holds not one hut two doctorates even though they are useless. He just has to be the wealthiest among his peers even though Dominica is the poorest and least developed.

The gesture to the Vincentian people looks good hut it’s all about massaging his insatiable ego for recognition.

No man can be genuinely kind to strangers when he clearly shows a depraved indifference to the suffering of his own people.

There is a vacuum of leadership rom the present ruling autocracy in terms of charting a road to success and prosperity for Dominicans.

I knew this story was imminent. Skerrit and his Labour strategists are so predictable. Anytime this dishonest regime finds itself in a national scandal it announces some sort of grand proposal for diversionary purposes. Do you remember the $64 000 monthly tax payers funded palace then soon after an announcement about Mr. Denis Byron to spearhead electoral reforms?

After I read the headline of this story I discontinued reading. This is just another headline grabbing subterfuge in Skerrit’s corrupt world so that his eggshell ego would not be hurt.

  10. April 7, 2021

Great idea. But even better… offer the old Ross Medical School campus as a new home for the All Saints campus currently on St Vincent. And persuade the rest of All Saints to move from Roseau to Picard.

Skerrit likes to play Santa Claus. To boost his ego. The Government of St. Vincent has not indicated that it will need to house citizens in other countries. Moreover, St. Vincent has the Grenadine islands.

I just listened to information coming from St.Vincent, and the prime mistake of St.Vincent didn’t indicate that they requested from the one man rogue regime that they would need to relocate their people,to the slave plantation mentality island called Dominica. I heard they mentioned Barbados and St. Lucia to accept people. Who wants to relocate to Dominica? That loosehead one man rogue regime, just seeking for relevance!!!

You are exactly right. Skerrit wants to portray himself to the outside world as the Great Philanthropist. But thousands of his fellow citizens are going hungry everyday and he stubbornly refuses to use the billions that the country collects from the sale of the people’s patrimony to alleviate the excruciating and widespread suffering.

Luckily St Vincent, Grenada, Barbados and Trinidad are in a family league of their own in the Southern Caribbean. They take good care of each other down there. Remember the number of Dominicans that Trinidad took in after our hurricanes, well imagine what they will do for their St Vincent family, and I mean blood relatives. But maybe Skerrit does not know the family histories of those Southern Caribbean islands. A bit like Dominica and Antigua. Vincy people will be okay in the home counties. But you have to admire Skerrit trying to get back into Ralph Gonsalves good book! That St Vincent Argyle International Airport take you boy! Go and build the shed that you promised Dominicans in Wesley! I waiting for you to tell Dominicans after the next hurricane that you had to use the airport development money again for hurricane relief! China will build it and own it along with Dominica. Plis tard plis twist!

This is a very good gesture. We just hope that it is managed properly and plans are being put in place in advance to the people of SVG can be comfortable in their time of need. We still have the Baily Bridges from SVG after Maria and they did come our aid without question. Just do this right Mr Pm.

        April 7, 2021

Yes if I’m fleeing a violent exploding volcano belting out poisonous gases, stifling ash, and fiery molten magma. SMH!!

And those of us questioning the gesture or second guessing the motive, remember we ate the most volcanic island in the chain. Just saying. So whatever you think the PM’s motives are , the gesture is unquestionably the right one. Whether it becomes needed or not.

The Moroccan Hotel doesn’t look anything like this photo montage. The Moroccan Hotel is a unfinished shell that has been empty and abandoned for the last 10 years. This is one of Skerrit projects that were started but were never completed. Other unfinished projects: Geothermal Plant, coffee factory, abattoir to name but a few. Approx. EC$150 Million spend but nothing to show for it. That’s the way Skerrit and the cabal treat Dominicans money. To top it he invites people from other islands to stay in one of his ruins. I’m actually wondering if that man is right in his head…

BOY LOK ABSOLUTE NONSENSE!!. All you ever go inside that place? inside there have how much different style of tyle all over the place. Badly constructed and poor interior decoration. Is like tiles had run out in some places in the hotel and so they finish it with whatever they could get.

Why not allow student apartment owners, especially those who have 2 and 3 bedroom apartments to earn some kind of revenue to repay their loans at the banks instead ove using this eyesore. then again if it just sitting there why not put it to good use. I say by now Mano and them would have established a personal gentleman’s club in that supposed hotel by now. Let me not talk too fast.
