National captain to appear before DFA on assault charge

ROSEAU, Dominica, Jan 13, CMC – National captain Delbert Dailey will know his fate soon when he appears before the disciplinary committee of the Dominica Football Association for assaulting a referee.

Dailey, who led Dominica to a 4-0 victory over the British Virgin Islands last December at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, has been suspended by the DFA for assaulting former FIFA referee Ibrahim Brohim.

The senior national player landed  punches to Brohim’s head during a Premiere Division football match on Sunday between St. Joseph and Cliff Top Icons.

Dailey became incensed when the referee awarded a penalty kick against his St. Joseph team, five minutes before the half-time interval in the encounter which finished 1-0 to Icons.

Dailey runs a football Academy in St. Joseph and is currently employed as a sports officer assigned to the Sports Division.

Its not because a boyfriend treats you like a queen that he has the right to turn around and pysically abuse you. It does not matter if he buys you disney land ok. But if he makes that mistake, does he have to wait for the police to show you hat he is sorry? Lets say for arguemnent sake that boyfriend is a Police Officer who arrests others for the same act? What would be the comments on this page? I can tell for eg. ” a Police Officere who should know better ; among others. My point is, the more trained and professional that you become the more is expected of you. One who has gone through the syetem like Daley should have been able to restrain himself and worst, he was not provoked by the Referre. He was not.

Now like I said there is a process but he must start the healing that would retrurn him to the good books that he was settled in before this incident. It was not self defence, he was not under the infleunce of drinks and the Referee did not attack, assault, annoy ot insult the player.

Let us picture this scene occurring in a game where Daley was captaining Dominica National Team in a World Cup Qualifier or in a Caribbean Competition out side of Dominica? What would your position be then? Would you be able to erase the regional and international shame by saying to FIFA that he has an Acadeny in St. Joseph?

This is where we MUST nip these acts of violence in sports at home, in Daleys Academy, at school in all our clubs. This new culture is unacceptable. If a man can lose his cool in a Football Game, not against another player, ,which can happen easily, as it is a close contact sport, BUT, against an official, this man needs help outside of Football.

I will never assume the role of the authorities and he MUST be given a fair hearing, but if you saw what I saw, you would not even allow him a hearing, but we do not leave in a jungle, even if this act was jungle.

The youth that look up to him must learn that no mattewr who you are you cannot get away with this sort of behavior. We cannot give him a free pass because he is a good guy. Good guys have issues and good guys also need help. THIS WAS A CRY FOR HELP and you are not helping him but making excusses for him my friends.

    Greetings all,

I would like to apologise for the errors in my fisrt posting which statewd that he retaliated as a result of a call made by the referee on his brother and for the grammataical error in my last paragraph.

Now, I need to add this in response to all the individuals who are of the view that our comments are nagative. I applaud the young man for his work wioth the youth and he is not the first or the only one who has been involved in mentoring youth ok, but this is where this thing hurts the most. He is a man and to err is human, BUT, he is a mentor, he is a teacher, he is a National Football Captain. I do not knoe how to make this more clear. He is NOT an ORDINARY FOOTBALLER / SPORTSMAN. He is the “light” that is supposed to lead our youth. He has a responsibility and I am not perfect, but I would have alreadyc issued a public apology like I susgested in my first comment.

    @Second Chance, @forgiveness and @ComeOn

There is a reason why we’re all mad. Yes we all make mistakes, but we have to pay for them mistakes, and if it is a really bad mistake then the payment has to be somewhat equal even if you’re a real good person. Whether he is your friend or you’re fan of his, you need to realize that this is a very big mistake, the man didn’t fight with a player, the man assaulted a referee, that can lead to other referees not wanting to referee anymore and there’s goes the league. A Roseau player was banned from the league years ago for slapping a referee, it’s not the first time. This is why we’re so mad because this could threaten the very game.

Now you imagine some guy repeatedly punching you because you and him had a disagreement and he lose his temper. Would you feel the same because the guy was normally a good guy, you either want to retaliate or have the guy arrested for assaulting you.
So before you think ppl being negative and shouldn’t comment you need to realize that this is not about hating him or not wanting to forgive him, we just want all players and upcoming players to see how severe a mistake that is. Can’t have one player ruining it for everybody else.

However, I do hope if he will be forgiven and be reinstated after a very long time.

  9. second chance
    January 14, 2010

I think we dominicans have to change our way of thinking and the way we act towards each other. I really think that if people have no positive contribution to give, they should not comment at all. Bashing an individual is not a remedy to an incident such as in this case. If we are a praying nation and we believe in God, then we should be able to forgive people. I am sure the man did that out of anger, aand i.m pretty sure that he regreted. We should not let one mistake overshadow the good of an individual. The man has done so much for the youth and his community. Everyone deserves a second chance. I am sure that these people who take the time and enjoy writing all these negative comments, have children, nieces nephews, brothers and sisters, and at some point they, including those persons, will at some point in their lives need a second chance. We need to learn to forgive others,. If we as a nation start to work on that, I think Dominica will be a far much better place, and we would benjoy abudance of blessings.

  10. ComeOn
    January 14, 2010

Wow, your comment is the only positive comment up here right now. People are always so quick to judge others and really do not look at their own self. I know half of you all are no saints either, but you here posting negative comments. Yes what Mr. Dailey did is no excuse and DFA need to deal with it with an open mind and not no negative opinons. What Mr. Dailey doing for the youths in St.Joseph is a postive thing that none of you all here posting would come out and volunteer to do, I think Mr. Dailey and the parents of these children in St.Joephe need to come to a decision as to if they would like him Mr. Dailey to continue his work with tthier children, its not for you all to make any decision for them. Mr. Dailey being a PE teacher in the Government school system again has nothing to do with you all. It did not take place on any school grounds so to say fire him is out of place on you all behalf. Education Department can speak to him on the matter but cannot dismiss him. You all need to let go of all the negative comment and let DFA do there job and deal with the matter. Mr. Dailey you love what you do and that is playing football continue to do that on St.Joseph grounds for I know it have youths that will still come out and join you there trust me they will come, but first speak to them for they look up to you as a good player and a great coach. I do hope all work out well for you as a young man and a great player.

  11. Forgiveness
    January 14, 2010

Is this the lesson that we want to send for our Youth? That when they make mistakes they will never be given a second chance in life? What he did was wrong but as an athlete, sometimes, we get carried away with our emotions. Athletes who make millions of dollars get carried away all the time. It is not right, but at the same time, there is a thing call forgiveness. For someone who runs a sport academy for young people is obviously someone who cares about young people. How many of us are doing things to help young people?
    Give the guy a break.

I would like to condemn the actions of Delbert Daley and would also like to state that this is not a reflection of the community of St. Joseph. Delbert Daley must be regretting his actions and it is obvious that he has issues that needs to be addressed far away from the Football field. I am one who believes that too many individuals get to represent my country as National Players without having the qualities and charater to be allowed the previlege of being called a National Player. Captain at that!

Skill is one thing, discipline is another and the latter comes before the former in my books. I know of the rich history of sports in St. Jospeh but this babaric act by non other than Dominica’s Football Captain is very unfortunate. Referees are in charge of the Football Game and in the event a Referee gives wrong decisions the field of play is NOT the forum to address that. A Referee calling a foul or penalty on your team and against your biological brother is not a reason to physically abuse that official.

Daley is a Sports Teacher and he is also involved in coaching young boys and while I must allow and respect the rule of law as it relates to a fair hearing before a Tribunal I think that Daley should take a leave of absence from the Academy that he is involved in and also the St. Joseph team must suspend him forthwith.

Daley has compromised himself and cannot be entrusted to teach our youth discipline because he has demonstrated, in their presence, that he is unfit to be their tutor and mentor. In addition to the punishment that he may have to face I think that he needs to write an apology addressed to the followiing: the Football Association, the Referees Association, his team sponsor, his team, the league sponsor, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Sports, the staff and students of the school where he teaches, the parenhts of the students of that school and the members of his Academy, all sports loving residents of St. Joseph at home and abroad and the members of the National Football Team. He should also apologise in writting and on National Radio to Abrahim Brohim.

He must show some level of remorse and hopefully he would not be made to serve a very long ban so that he can return to Football and his Academy. There is no excuse for that kind of behavior in any sporting discipline. This man has single handedly bring down the resopect earned my the great sportsmen of the St. Joseph community. Sports demands discipline and one who has none cannot be entrusted with the development of our future sportsmen and women. Peace.

ah ah ah ah.Look at how simple the man going to lose all his positions boy.that hurts my heart. One minute of pleasure is a lifetime of pain. Everytime you remember that delbert tears will come from your eye. yes you lost your temper and i do wish everything continues for you but that kind of behaviour i doubt it. Good Luck.

IF YOU GO ON ALL THE MEDIA-RADIO,NEWSPAPER,TV ETC AND APOLOGISE YOU WILL STAND A CHANCE. TAKE MY ADVICE.

    January 13, 2010

That is just nonsense, this man should never be given an opportunity to teach our youths ever again( he should be removed as sports officer and academy coach) … I really hope they make an example out of this guy. We have to let any player thinking of hitting a referee or any person in authority in any sport should remember this guy before they do it..

    January 13, 2010

He should be diesciplened accordingly. Thet is defintely ot the message that we want o send to our Youth. Dailey should have displayed better sportsmanship. The DFA should send a strong message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. If the Referee Association is not satisfied with the decision rendered by the DFA, they should take the matter up with FIFA.

As a Sport Officer, he needs to set a better example for the youth. Everyman deserves a second chance, and by all accounts Dailey is a stand up guy…..So I would not go as far as saying that he should be suspended from his duties as a Sports Officer, but should continue to urge the youth to respect themselves, the rules of teh games they play, and finally the referee’s decisions.

A teacher? I can’t believe this! Shame on you Mr. Dailey. What kind of role model are you? You need to be ban for life! No excuses for this one. The DFA needs to make an example of you.

Its clear what this guy did is wrong, and should be punished for it, but the things that people are saying is not called for, he runs an academy because he has talent and is good at the game of football, he work as a sports office because he went to school for it , this young man made a mistake based on haste, he will hear his fate for that mistake but we as a people need to chill on the hash comments and stop acting like we are perfect people because we are not, we all make mistakes.

This guy should be made to apologize to Brohim, and go around the schools and explain to the young sports men and women, How’
NOT TO LET YOUR ANIMALISTIC EMOTION, PREDOMINATE OVER YOUR SPORTMANSHIP’
and how to conduct yourself on the playing field, with suspention.

    January 13, 2010

Lack of sportsmanship. Should be disciplined by all means.
However, there is an underlying issue here.
The poor attitude and lack of respect of the game officials. Bad decisions at games.
At so many games this is an issue.
Time after time, game after game.
    It is a serious problem.
The players are fed up and frustrated.
The entire situation has to be addressed.
Referees swear at young players etc, this thing works both ways.
Please football association………address the situation and do some investigating.
And do so with open and objective minds.

The Football Division DFA SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO ESCAPT FOR WHAT HAPPEN TO BROHIM.
IT WAS A GOOD THING REFEREE MARTIN CHARLES DID NOT ALLOWED HIM SELF TO BE POUNCH BY A PLAYER IN THE MATCH BATH ESTATE VS. IECONS. HE WAS SMART ENOUGHT 2 CALL OF THE MATCH BEFORE IT HAPPEN, BUT THE DFA INSPITE OF SUSPENDING SIX PLAYERS OF THE ICON TEAM STILL REPLAY THE GAME. BE THIS IT WAS CLAER TO THE PLAYERS THAT THE DFA WAS NOT SERIOUS ABOUT DISCIPLIN.
