New airline, Antigua Airways, to fly directly to Antigua from West Africa

A new airline called Antigua Airways will soon be permitted to operate flights from West Africa directly to the twin-island nation.

The company according to the government is apparently financed by wealthy Africans who wish to open a new route between the African continent and the Eastern Caribbean.

The firm is hoping to collaborate with LIAT, flying passengers north and south of Antigua who have come from West Africa.

“The Cabinet had the opportunity to discuss moving forward negotiations for a new airline to be named Antigua Airways once such name s available and it will hopefully be permitted to operate flights from West Africa directly to Antigua.

The company is owned by a group of Africans, who wish to open up new opportunities between the African continent and the Eastern Caribbean.

“Antigua and Barbuda is excited about such opportunities. We see this as an opportunity for great expansion and growth within the Eastern Caribbean. We can no longer limit ourselves to the traditional jurisdictions and we must open up opportunities by allowing us to consider such alternative options,” said Agriculture Minister Samantha Marsha.

Marshal represented Information Minister Melford Nicholas at Thursday’s weekly Cabinet press briefing. She said negotiations are ongoing.

Geography wise, it makes sense and significantly reduces travel time to the African content, hence Barbados and Guyana also have flights leaving to West Africa from these two nations. We do not know how popular this route is and what the business model is, to sustain such an airline. Safety and maintenance of said airline is another issue of concern.

I’m not aware of any scheduled direct flights from Georgetown (Guyana) and Barbados to W. Africa and would be very interested in the details.

      @Dominican Bwoi

Refrain from making such a disgusting comment about the continent of our ancestors. That’s what the Europeans taught our ancestors and it is still working today.

They taught us to hate everything about ourselves ( hair, complexion, language) etc. After 400 years, it’s still working perfectly well.

Lastly, if you watch BBC, CNN, and other international news, you would be inclined to believe that Africa is a continent where nothing good happens.

I just want to disabuse you of that fallacious notion. There are many countries and places on the African continent that are among the best developed in the world. The news media does only highlight these places. All they show is poverty, civil wars, emaciated children, diseases, et cetera.

Yes, there are tremendous problems there. However, there are many awesome things happening also. Don’t allow yourself to be so easily misled.

I don’ t believe the promises and assertions of any government in the OECS until they become to fruition.

These governments are not known for their veracity. They over promise and under-deliver. Their assertions are just figment of their imagination.

Why do these people lie so profusely? They (government ministers) are not held accountable by the indifferent attitude of the populace, and the lazy, compromised, local media.

I am not sure what the business model is, but if this project is being financed by wealthy West Africans, who one would assume they know their market and would be marketing to West Africans who want to visit the Caribbean. Why would they name the airline Antigua Airways?
There is a reason why some airlines are called American Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, Air India, Air Jamaica etc. There is some legacy of state ownership for some of them, but there is also the issue of national branding.
Which begs the question, why would these guys brand the airline with a name most West African customers would not recognize?

These rogues leadas.es of anti-ga,duminica and rest the islands have played so much crooked politricks with everything including the airline industry, that now they’re scampering around! Stanford alone could make traveling around the islands so easy, yet a group caricom/carigo rogues can’t function! Countries like the USA and Europe should stop flying to these rogues slave plantation mentality islands, the same way they are pulling out their banks!!

you see how you don’t have sense? if people from the US and Europe stop coming here, how are we to generate foreign currency? most of these islands depend heavily on tourism. If they stop coming, hotels will close, farmers cant sell there products to hotels, etc. you can tell you didn’t think this through before you began to type. smh. and guess what? 9 people who had an opportunity to read what you posted still thought that you made sense. so they are actually worse than you are.

For those in the Caribbean region who have business or family or vacation plans in the West Africa region this is welcome news. Now instead of the ridiculous expense, in money, time, and carbon dioxide emissions of flying to London or Paris thence to West Africa, one can fly straight across from Antigua – 1/4 the distance. The problem now becomes for many – how best to get to Antigua from the other islands – a Caribbean regional airline problem. Good luck with this innovative new venture.

First of all, many africans are wealthy. Many have French and british colonial backgrounds making the cultures similar to ours. Many would like to explore and learn about the region. Many would like to trade commodities and resources. Many would like to invest in areas where we lack and havent done for ourselves. Do you know that musically and culturally this could open doors for the region? See a performance below from artists from Angola – West Africa. that can move on WCMF

All I know is there are not many Africans visiting or living in Dca but I am certain those who will eventually come will overstay their visa. The caribbean must also brace themselves for the scamming artists who will be visiting our shores with the sole intention of participating in deceitful. Sorry if I hurt somebody boeboe by saying that but I want to be real because we will have Nigerians on that flight.

Hopefully we don’t take advantage of them by charging them mucho dollars like Haitians) as security guarantee and then allow somebody to mistakenly sweep the dollars away while cleaning the Marigot police station   .

Bwa-Banday, I recommend that you and others who share the same views as you, read the Infamous Letter of Willie Lynch. You all are victims of the Willie Lynch syndrome.

You would understand why our people bleach their skin; hate themselves and each other; always patronize foreigners and their businesses, etc.

For you, Africa and its inhabitants conjures up the worst of everything – evil, darkness, murders, witchcraft, massacres, poverty, etc.

Slavery was abolished in most of these islands in 1834 but our minds are still shackled.

Thousands of Africans that have migrated to the United States do much better educationally and economically than the average native black American.

Too many people conflate education and intelligence I have come to realise. Read widely and liberate your minds.

ADMIN: Self-hatred and the resulting prejudice is incredibly unhealthy and we believe any lie or ideology that promotes such things should be combatted with facts. However, while at first glance an appealing tool to fight the lies perpetuated about (and to control) people with African ancestry there is a mountain of evidence, much of it undisputable, that the Willie Lynch letter is fabricated.

We follow the practice that lies should be combatted with facts and not more lies – even comforting and appealing ones.

Below is a thorough examination of the Willie Lynch letter: https://www.blackexcellence.com/willie-lynch-letter/

*edit* We have a also published an opinion piece on the Willie Lynch Letter here: https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/black-history-month/finding-the-truth-in-deception-disunity-versus-unity-of-hate/

I wouldn’t make the authenticity of that letter a big deal. You know it was war and warfare.

ADMIN: That is your sentiment and it may be a very commonly shared sentiment but the truth matters and has consequence. If we choose to report a known criminal is guilty of murder when someone else is ,in fact, guilty of that murder the real guilty party will remain unidentified and unhindered if they attempt to commit a similar crime.

We will also be liable if a defamation case is brought against us. There is no standard of “close enough”.

That’s ok, you’re not the only ones on the legality thingy, we’re used to the shenanigans. We have always had to prove, sometimes beyond reasonable doubt that we were victims of that mega-holocaust; not required of ‘others’, where even the kitchen sink was thrown at us. It is not that easy, they be able to fly to Antigua, but getting to America, they still need a visa. That to me seems bogus though.

It is easy to say West Africa; however, without naming the exact place I am skeptical.

West Africa consists of the western part of the African continent, especially the countries bounded by and including Mauritania, Mali, and Niger in the north and Gabon in the south.

Antigua always have some sort of crap like that you; one time in the 1970’s the Bird family had to 747 passenger jet on the ground to do international flights, the airline collapses before the first flight took off you know!

If that is in reference to my submission; I must asks you this: Don’t you find something looked fishy about the itinerary?

The distance between Antigua, and lets say Niger in West Africa is approximately 7,658 kilometers; that means the air travel distance is approximately 4,758 miles, so if my calculation is correct depending on where in West Africa the flight is destine, one could be in the sky’s for a duration of approximately nine (9) hours and forty-five (45) minuets.
That’s reasonable, but will such a route be profitable?

I don’t think so, because it would depend on how many people traveling from West Africa to Antigua, monthly or weekly!
‘I don’t know of any place on the planet attracting African tourist; do you?

And that’s what looked suspicious and fishy!
