New CARICOM Secretary-General takes up office on Monday

Dr. Barnett

An Installation Ceremony for the new Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr Carla Barnett, will be held on Monday 16 August 2021, from 10:00 a.m. ECT.

The Chairman of CARICOM, Prime Minister Hon Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda, will welcome the new Secretary-General and bring greetings from the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government.

Dr. Barnett will address the Ceremony and is expected to outline her vision and indicate some matters that will occupy her immediate attention.

Belizean Dr Barnett has served in the past as the first woman and the youngest person appointed as Deputy-Secretary of CARICOM (1997 -2002).  She is an economist who has also broken other barriers while working across the English-speaking Caribbean, including becoming the first woman appointed as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, and as Financial Secretary, in Belize.  She also worked at the Caribbean Development Bank as Country Economist and Vice President, Operations.

She is a long-time advocate for gender-equality, “not only because it is the right thing to do to create a more stable and equitable society, but also because gender equality is good economic policy”.

Dr Barnett takes over from Dominican Economist Ambassador Irwin LaRocque who served from 2011-2021.  She becomes the 8th Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its predecessor the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA), following these other distinguished servants of the Caribbean Community:

Irwin LaRocque of Dominica                                  2011-2021

I wish Caricom was abolished just for 3 months so all you ignorant people can really see how caricom benefits you. If only you would read the news you would realize the great impact this organization has on the region. My of the funding from the imf and Europe to the Caribbean and individual islands are through caricom. Many of the imports and exports at the current price are through Caricom. Many of your relatives live in Caricom country who sends remittances back how home stimulating the entire country. Your salary is dependent on the economy.

Is CARICOM really relevant? Are the people of the Caribbean know the aims, goals and objectives of CARICOM? Look at who is the present Chairperson of CARICOM? Knowing this, does it inspires confidence in this talk-shop organization?

What has CARICOM done lately more then talk? Corrupt electoral systems, police atrocities, corrupt judicial systems in many member states and not even a word of reprimand from the executive. CARICOM is a toothless, useless piece of abbreviation.

Sent RSS to prevent Dominicans from protesting against fraudulent and undemocratic elections to allow a quasi dictator to again steal an election.

CARICOM is a joke and a smoke screen. It should be abolished. This body/agency allows Islands to accept all sorts of foreign thieves to engage in island hopping and filling our streets with overcrowded vagrants and idlers. Encouraging voting irregularities and cheating. I’m sick of this CARICOM embarrassment.

That’s the harsh truth. It’s the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

How can any sane person have any confidence or trust in an organization that sent soldiers to support and prop up a government by teargasing a community of babies, children, elderly people in the cover of darkness while these unsuspecting people slept?

Why is it that this organization doesn’t even utter as much as a whisper on blatant rigging of elections? What is more absurd and callous, is that, each member country sends congratulatory messages to their fellow members who win elections by fraudulent and unscrupulous means instead of condemning them Unbelievable!
