New equipment for PMH in 2013

The Princess Margaret Hospital

Health Minister Julius Timothy has said that the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) will benefit from new state of the art equipment in 2013 and is expecting a Chinese-funded hospital to begin in the new year.

“We intend to get a new CT scan, new state of the art mammograms, we intend to re-equip the entire neonatal ward,” Timothy revealed.

He noted that the new hospital is expected to begin in the new year. “I am expecting that with the new hospital that the Chinese will assist us in procuring some new equipment,” he stated.

According to Timothy, he is pushing for the installment of an MRI Machine at the hospital.

“There are cases that are severe and by the time you send the person overseas the person would have died, so we need our own equipment,” he pointed out, adding that although the use of the machine might be costly, it will be much cheaper than persons having to pay air fare and hotel accommodation to travel for medical attention.

The machine is expected to cost approximately $1.5-million.

A new oncology department and a fully equipped conference room are also expected for the new year at PMH.

Timothy also stated that the services provided at the hospital will be enhanced. According to him, a team of doctors including an accident and emergency specialist, radiologist, surgeon and oncologist are expected in 2013 to give service to Dominica.

Meanwhile, the Health minister described the year 2012 as a trying year for his ministry because of the current global economic situation.

According to the minister, the government of Dominica has not been able to come forward with the resources required.

He stated there was an increase in the number of tuberculosis cases during 2012, however this was dealt with very well by the medical staff.

“At the moment we just completed a new, temporary building where we hope to put the tuberculosis patients. We did not want so many tuberculosis patients in the general ward but the population has diminished dramatically …. so far our intervention has gone very well,” he said.

Timothy also added that there has been an increase in the number of leptospirosis cases and neonatal deaths.

people can talk….. the place is a mess the minister knows it.why dont we send our junior doctors to spealize in the various fields mentioned instead of importing doctors who claim to be consultants…. and the junior doctors knows more medicine than them..
presently some are here for almost two years and cant get registed…is it a medical school we are running here?. Come better than that boss…who feels it knows it. I rest my case.

i just hope when the new machines are install there are persons who are trained to handle them. Up to now there are new machines at pmh and nurses do not know how to operate them. Right now Micky Moreau is at pmh and has to be trying to fix the machine to save his own life. what a state of the art that. :-?

   :?: Some of you people can really be fooled and taken for a ride!Dumb-in-cans are really gullible people, will swallow any nice words their politicians tell them, when they support them blindly! This illegal government promised the people a new state of the art hospital from the chinese as part of the m.o.u in 2004 which should have been completed in 2010 and yet the people are not holding them liable and responsible but instead applauding for a continued promise which cannot be fulfilled!   :?:

DNO, do you have pictures of the architectural renditions for the new hospital? It seems like they should have built this new hospital at another location… not just add to the mess that’s there already.

The state house first, that of course is far more important than the health and well being of the Dominican people. He and the members of govt (ministers advisors only the very very important ones) could just pop over to Martinique or even the America for treatment. The rest of the not so very important people have to put up with what is on offer at the princess m hospital -one other thing where are all the Dr’s coming from -hope they can speak English -it just might help

This is where prime minister skerrit should have spend the money instead of a state house. He should put the health of Dominicans First. The hospital should already have been equiped with am MRI machine.

what ever happened to the proposed upgrade to the ICU (Intensive care) and hyperbaric chamber. Will you have hyperbaric doctors on staff to treat diabetic injury instead of using the knife to remove limbs? Remember with the DWA working hard to promote the changes in air access, the number of dive tourists will rise and they need to know that the million dollar safety cushion is at least working.

Good news Mr Minister. I’m looking forward to all of it. There’s one concern though. The building and location intended for the TB ward is not the best. Whoever gave that advice to have the TB ward in that area is either working against your ministry or against the Dominican people.

By the way . I am owing couple hundred to the hospital .Let me settle that so they could purchase some more machines.WE NEED TO PLAY OUR PART TOO PEOPLE.

    • endless love
      December 28, 2012

@2cute – they get machines already. pay for them to get some medication because i tired with the paracetamol. back pain, stomach ache, head ache, broken hand, broken leg, toothache, pregnant, miscarriage, there is only one medication, Paracetamol. i was surprise one day i go casualty and i get ibuprofen. and they need to get lots and lots of IV too because each patient must get some “drips”.

and they need to improve on the meals at the hospital. a grown woman or man getting two slices of vienna sausage and a roll with half a cup of tea at 6 in the morning till lunch.

i must compliment them on the pumpkin soup, no matter what pumpkin they use, the soup always bright yellow.

BUT they doh fraid to bill you. before you leave, your bill in your hand.

    December 28, 2012

Imagine. You are hardpressed to find three seriously professional and people centred Nurses on the Neo-natal ward. If you as a pregnant person don’t enlighten yourself about how to care for yourself before, during and after birth and also choose your primary care doctor carefully, you end up with either a dead baby, or one suffering seriously unexplained illness. So while it is appreciated that the new equipment will enhance the services the service caregivers needs much improvement. We understand that staff morale is low; so Mr Health Minister work on that too.

New equipments and facilities alone cannot be the answer to the outcome of patient care at PMH/PHC. The internal management politics designed to frustrate competent/experienc staffs must be addressed. We surely need the necessary coaching and mentorship so that we can progressively achieve our desired goals. We need to ask ourselves why has gorvernment spent millions, the chines donated millions on equipments yet we are hearing of equipment shortage? are the equipments that are purchased disposable items?????????????!

Great news!So very long awaited. So to is the new hospital. I believe the average person would not mind paying present taxes if he knows it will be going for much needed infrastructure and life saving equipment and personnel such as this! Meanwhile it would be good to know when exactly the new hospital project will start and end. The new hospital is probably the most important undertaking in years.

    December 28, 2012

It’s not a new hospital like their new palace but I guess anything to appease the deluded masses!

  30. December 28, 2012

I wish to welcome this fantastic good news to have all these important machines in Dominica. The Government should be complemented. However,If we are to continue to offer Domincans under the ages of sixteen or eighteen and above sixtyfive with free health care, how are we going to pay for those machines? By the way,do we have trained personels in place to operate these machines.

    • objective
      December 28, 2012

There are persons within these age group mentioned that truely cannot aford to pay for their medical bills. I think government must make this policy specific for those genuinly cannot aford,

I am not surprise in the increase of neonatal deaths. Can you imagine being in the labor for more than 20+ hours. For crying out loud…if the patient request a c-section, perform the C-section. What is wrong with the medical staff. Gone are the days when we were not equipped to handle such operations. The child is stoke in passage, the lady has been trying to push for what seems like eternity…. Do a C-section….esp if the patient request one….that way, it more than guarantees a live birth. Our medical team to like to tell patients how they feeling. Every birth is different. the woman may have had for example four or so other children, this one is different, she cant push it out the natural way…do a c-section. It is safer for the patient and safer for the baby.

Try putting that inpractice, and i can bet u, 2013 report will read, there has been a decrease in neonatal deaths. I rest my case.

CLearly you are confused. I wish you would seek the facts first before you speak.

    • December 29, 2012

Okay RN, LPN, CNA or who knows maybe HHA in the USA. way to go.Suggest you come home and give DRs F & O not forgetting our midwives a few lectures and oversee a few deliveries.
While you are at it lecture the nurses in the ICU and ER. When you’ve done go to the ministerial building the house that Johnson built and give medard a few lessons in speech( The P.M’s speech) then proceed to finance, bobol, Agriculture and any other deficit areas you deem vital to make him and cabinet more able and aware.
Take them to the real next level or a new level.

    • Is me!
      December 29, 2012

@ Confused…….you sound like a consultant! So every patient who requests C-section should be wheeled quickly into the OR and given a c-section? Do you know the indications for a c-section friend? I hope you do before you make these kind of comments!!
