International Youth Day 2019 Message

National Youth Council of Dominica

Today August 12th 2019 is celebrated as International Youth Day. The National Youth Council of Dominica, would like to take the opportunity to wish every young person in Dominica, the Region and the World happy International Youth Day. We pray for your continued success and the fortitude to overcome challenges that you may encounter.

This year’s theme is “transforming education” we personally consider such a theme to be very relevant and consistent with our desire to empower every youth within this country. Education is the single most important catalyst to transform a society. Economic prosperity is also closely link to a country’s human capacity. As a country we have made remarkable strides as regards education, since we have achieved universal access to primary, secondary and recently tertiary education. Essentially creating access for all desiring an education. We sort as well to be as inclusive as possible by breaking down barriers of entry irrespective of one’s class, gender or disability. Granted that there is always room for improvement.

Additionally, this year, youth led organizations are also charged with the responsibility of transforming our education sector. One such way we’re achieving this is by making provisions for the development of vocational skills training for the youth having recognized the deficiency of this particular skill set in Dominica. This is being achieved in Dominica through several organizations such as the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development and through the division of youth and other such organizations. The National Youth Council is also currently spearheading a project targeted at three communities (Kalinago Territory, New Town, Soufriere) geared at extracurricular activities and varying vocational skills training. The National Youth Council is also giving support to the ( Skill for Youth Employment in the Caribbean (SYKE) Project geared at training young individuals in various skills.

To grow and develop we must firstly, prioritize on our education sector in other to prepare our youth for the future. We wish to encourage all youth to take advantage of prevailing opportunities, as leaders we can only do so much, but the onus is on you  to take that leap of faith to build a better life for yourself, your family, your community and your country.  #LeadFromWhereYouAre
