One Young World Ambassador Kellyn George recognized for work with sickle cell disease in Dominica

Dominican native and One Young World Ambassador, Kellyn George, was featured, along with her ambassador colleagues, in the ‘One Young World’s 2020 Impact Report ‘.

The report focused on Sustainable Development Goal 3, “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.

George, who is from the village of Mahaut, founded a non-governmental organization (NGO) called the ‘Sickle Cell Cares Foundation’ to provide information and education about sickle cell disease in Dominica.

George says she recognized the need for additional support because she has had the disease all her life and statistics show that 35% of the citizens of the island have the disease. In January 2015, George was named as one of the winners of the inaugural Queen’s Young Leaders Award for her work in improving the lives of her fellow citizens. The awards were bestowed in June 2015.

According to a press release, the Sickle Cell Cares Foundation has impacted local society through its contributions to both the health and education sectors.

“Annually the NGO impacts the lives of over 3000 people through its established programs and small projects. Most recent contributions include, donations of school supplies to the Goodwill Primary School to offset needs of students created by COVID-19 and chronic non-communicable diseases,” George stated.

She said future projects are currently being developed to promote healthy lifestyles for persons living with sickle cell disease.

The One Young World Ambassadors’ work has contributed to the improved access to healthcare for over 3.2 million people globally.

Since 2010, One Young World Ambassadors have positively impacted the lives of over 30 million people from across the world.
