Plans for opening of Mass Dominique 2011 announced

Dominica Festival Committee (DFC) has announced its plans for the official opening of Mass Dominique 2011 to be held on February 12.

An increase in bands will be one of the expectations for this year’s Real Mas celebrations, according to carnival organizers.

Addressing a press conference this morning (February 12) Deputy Chairman of the DFC Sobers Esprit said, “We will be having the usual traditional masquerade forms like the sensay….lapo kabwit. We have some of the costume bands-gonna be parading aspects of their costumes, some  floats.”

There will also be “presentations by several of the competitions including our national queen competition, the Miss Teen, Miss Princess, we’re hoping to have on parade also, calypsonians and other competitors in the various competitions …”

Esprit further stated that an official program is set for the Carnival City where a few speeches and performances will be held but added that speeches will be kept at a minimum to allow for maximum reveling.

The Fanatik Band will be the stage band but will be joined with other local bands later on in the event.

The parade will begin at 3 p.m. on the Roseau Bayfront and culminate at Carnival City where at 6:30 p.m. the official ceremony will take place.

Every year I just laugh when I hear that these guys are going to have the official opening of Mas a month before Carnival Monday and Tuesday. In Trini, the official opening of Mas is months before Carnival Monday and Tuesday. The carnival bands start launching their bands as early as June and within two weeks most of the bands have sold out their costumes. When are we gonna be taking Mas Dominique to the Next Level? When are we going to see carnival as an industry? I really thought the Trini woman they hired would have brought some new ideas to our people.

I am not attacking my culture. I love it too. All I am suggesting is that we should see carnival as an industry and not an annual sewo. Yes, I do not expect us to do like Trinidad but I have been informed that costumes are purchased from Trinidad!!!!!!!!
