PM Skerrit promises to work with new Grand Bay MP in tackling constituency issues

Skerrit, Henderson

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has promised to work with the new parliamentary representative of the Grandbay Constituency, Ambassador Dr. Vince Henderson in order to make a difference in the lives of residents there.

Dr. Henderson was victorious in Grand Bay’s by-election on November 26, 2021, capturing 1221 votes in the official preliminary results.

He competed against Clarington “Twa Woche” Andrew (Roof Specialist- Independent) who received 3 votes and Julius ‘Handbag’ Gabriel (Bus driver- Independent) who got 161 votes.

“I say to them without any fear or contradiction that this Labour party will be there for the Grand Bay Constituency,” the prime minister said during a radio interview last week. “I will work with our new Parl Rep for Grandbay to ensure that we can make a difference in the lives of the people.”

The Prime Minister congratulated Dr. Henderson for his victory in what he described as a keenly contested by-election.

“This is a great victory for Dr. Henderson and it is a great victory for the Dominica Labour Party and I say it is a great victory for the people of Grand Bay,” he stated. “We are always confident that the people of Grand Bay will remain with Labour and I want to personally thank all the supporters in the Grand Bay Constituency for their continued solidarity and support to the Labour party.”

Skerrit said he looks forward to addressing some of the issues which constituents raised with the party during the campaign.

He said the campaign was a “special one” in which the party had to adapt to the circumstances brought about by COVID-19.

“It was one more of listening and I believe that during that process of campaigning and listening to the people, we were able to get more precisely, some of the issues confronting the Grand Bay constituency and I believe that we certainly will be formulating programmes and plans to ensure that we can respond to the concerns of this wonderful constituency,” the Prime Minister noted.

He said his proposition Grand Bay residents to have a non-Grand Bay native represent them was a huge act, “and I, as party leader, I feel humbled by the demonstration of support for this great party and the loyalty of the people of Grand Bay to this great party and the concerns they have for this great political party.”

He gave a commitment that his party will be building on what former Prime Minister and Parl Rep of Grandbay, Pierre Charles has constructed, on what John Fabien and nurse Justina Charles- Riviere contributed, “and we will be building on the legacy of our fallen comrade Edward Registe, all of whom have made a sterling contribution to the political, social, educational and economic life of the people Grandbay.”

Meantime, the DLP leader criticized the United Workers Party (UWP) for not fielding a candidate in the by-election, suggesting that the UWP had demonstrated by their action that Grand Bay which he said is “arguably is one of the most important constituencies in Dominica,” is not important.

In announcing its decision not to contest the by-election, the UWP described the contest as a “showdown of Skerrit versus the People of Grandbay” adding that it was “no place for competition between political parties that will stand in the way of the people of Grandbay uniting as one behind an independent candidate to fight for their independence, their democratic freedoms and the right to choose their own representatives.”

The party also called for independent candidate, Julius Gabriel, to be supported by all patriotic, democratic and “honest Dominicans who desire a better Dominica.”

The UWP also identified the lack of electoral reform as one of the factors which contributed to its decision not to participate.

Great comment TOTO. I’m not sure that our People know what journey are we taking and where to? We hope that it’s NOT. We all are focus on our journey and we need to move on with well known and respected Professionals with the well designed and thoughtful journey for our Nature Isle Dominica and it’s well established Democratic Democracy that will guide and respect our leaders hoping that they are sufficiently well Matured, Committed visionary and understand the concept of Socio-Economic Development Concept towards meaningful development concept and well prepared and Focussed on the Upliftment of our Government, People and Country. We have no time to engaged nor support this Deceitful, Disgusting Disrespectful Shameful, RED Clinic.
We don’t want any of our MINISTER’s abusing states funds in particular through this on going SKERRIT’s Disgusting RED CLINIC to gain allegence and fame from some IMMATURE VISIONLESS members of Parliament. We need Strong, DECENT Committed MATURED…

Skerrit and Vince on surface seems to be good friends. Together they have buried quite a few of our National leaders and fellow politicians

they remind me of the story of the Three little pigs and the big old wolf. The wolf was trying to outsmart them and eat them up but it turned out it’s the three little pigs that had him for dinner. Here is how it ended:
The three little pig made up a blazing fire and put on a big pot full of water to boil. Then, just as the wolf was coming down the chimney, the little piggy pulled off the lid, and plop! in fell the wolf into the scalding water.

So the little piggy put on the cover again, boiled the wolf up, and the three little pigs ate him for supper.

No doubt either Skerrit or Con-Vince will undo the other. Con-Vince has the dirt needed to cover Skerrit but Skerrit has the experience needed to get Vince first.

Vince has the Washington connection while Skerrit has the Chinese connection. So let’s see who gets who first

Because he says he is so willing to work with his hand-picked Parl Rep, does that mean he was not willing to work with the other Grand Bay picked Parl Reps that were there before henderson? Makes you wonder. Time will tell.

So Skerrit did not know Grandbay existed before Vince became the Parl Rep? What was Justina doing for her constituency? What was Ed Regisgte doing while he was alive?
Was Skerrit listening to these people, or did he think Grandbarians were so daft that he did not have to do anything to secure their vote?
It looks like the latter, since he now seems focused on doing something for the constituency. Where else in Dominica is Skerrit ignoring, knowing he has their vote in the bag? Portsmouth?

I don’t particularly like the guy, and I think we should change government every 10yrs, but while you guys are digging-in on mepuis he is doing concrete things such as handing you guys Grandbay on a platter by showing vulnerability, division in the ranks, placing an outsider against the people’s wishes etc., just the position any opposition would like to capitalize on, yet you all neglected to capitalize on that. What kind of gov’t can you form if you show such weakness? What if he hands you-all Portsmouth on a platter like this, do you have capacity to show strength rather than mepuis to be out next gov’t?

@Zandoli, what do you mean he did not know? Was he not working with Mr. Ed Registe? Otherwise, why did the people elect Vince Henderson? So does he have to spell out that he will continue with Vince Henderson from where he left off with Mr. Ed Registe? You people are out of this World, you see!

So Skerrit……why didn’t you promise to work with de former representative, Ed Registe?
Skerrit hasn’t identified anything that dlp has done in Grand Bay since coming into office……or better yet.. .since Skerrit became PM on Pierre Charles back.
