PM speaks on regional elections

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said the outcome of Grenada’s general election last week should not prejudice what may happen in Dominica when the next general election is held here.

Last Tuesday 65-year-old Keith Mitchell entered into the history of Caribbean politics when he led his New National Party (NNP) to a clean sweep of the 15 seats at stake in the general election, becoming the first political leader to achieve the feat, having previously done so in 1999.

Prime Minister Skerrit says each country has different political circumstances which determine the outcome of elections.

“I understand there are certain people in Dominica who are trying to link what has happened in Grenada to what may happen in Dominica. One thing that has to be made clear is that every country has its own circumstances and there were particular circumstances which existed in Grenada before and during the election campaign which led to the election outcome. We do not see any correlation to what happened in Grenada and what may happen in Dominica,” PM Skerrit pointed out.

Meantime Barbadian voters kept with tradition and provided the incumbent party with a second consecutive term in power following general elections in that country last Thursday.

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) won 16 of the 30 seats in the elections with the remainder going to the main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP).

Skerrit congratulated Prime Minister Freundel Stuart on his re-election as Prime Minister of Barbados.

“We want to again congratulate Prime Minister Freundel Stuart on his re-election as Prime Minister of Barbados. That too was a keenly contested election and at the end of the day the people spoke and they elected a Government,” he said.

PM Skerrit looks forward to working with the Prime Minister Freundel Stuart on matters of mutual interest to the region.

“We look forward to working with Prime Minister Stuart. I have worked with him since he became Prime Minister of Barbados at the CARICOM level. We also worked on International matters. He was very supportive of Dr. Carissa Etienne’s candidacy and also the appointment of Ambassador Irwin La Rocque as the Secretary General,” he remarked.

Prime Minister Skerrit says Barbados and Dominica have enjoyed excellent relations over the years.

“During our economic crisis, Barbados was one of the first countries which provided loan funds to the tune of 33 Million E.C dollars under the leadership of Prime Minister Owen Arthur.  Barbados has always been at the forefront of helping Dominica from time to time,” PM Skerrit noted.

With the economic and financial challenges confronting the region, Prime Minister Skerrit is advising that Barbados and Grenada focus on strengthening their economies.

“Both countries have their own economic challenges. In Barbados for example they have had to increase the Value added tax (VAT) from 15 percent to 17.5 percent. They have had to impose other austerity measures on the citizens, not because the Government doesn’t like the people but they had no option, they had to take action. Grenada likewise has its own economic challenges. It is not a time for us to be engaged in partisan politics, it is a time for us to rise to the occasion of recognizing that we have to put country before party and work towards the well being of our people”, advised PM Skerrit.

The Dominica leader has also advised his regional counterparts to put structural and fiscal policies in place to assist in addressing the issues faced by their individual economies.

Nations rise and nations fall. Kingdom rise and kingdom fall. Any corrupt leader has their day in court if they leave to see it. This world is not our own. I don’t know why Mr Skerro don’t know his days are numbered. Even though not by Dominicans but by the creator.

You cannot destroy a country, and the country is not really the land but the people, and get away.
He is not God and he is not our parents, and he want to treat us like no bodies. He is wrong. Every dictator day will finally come to an end. When they are caught, they cry for mercy, and they forget what they have done to people.

We Dominicans are crying every day, and God is going to one day answer. We are God’s children and no communist is going to reign forever. China, Venezuela, Cuba, can we see how these dictators lives are miserably coming to an end. They have to meet the creator and face judgement day. The bible say, revenge is mine, I will repay said the LORD!

The PM said: “There were particular circumstances which existed in Grenada before and during the election campaign which led to the election outcome.”
    PM skerrit, the circumstances were:
    – the uncovering of the corruption of the Minister of Finance.
    – Electoral Reform, yes Electoral Reform, which entailed cleaning of the voters’ list, and issuing of Voter ID Cards;things which you refused to do in Dominica.
    – Grenadians call corruption for what it is and they root it out.
    – The government (the ruling party) called the election and was booted out by the Opposition who did not even allow them to win a seat!

Correct me if I am wrong but nowhere did I see or hear Mr Skerrit congratulate the PM of Grenada on his party’s victory. What’s wrong? What happened to diplomacy? Was he so disappointed that his boys did not win that he forgot his political manners? Does the new PM of Grenada make Mr Skerrit uneasy/uncomfortable? Will Mr Skerrit be looking forward to working with him as he does with the PM of Barbados?
Mr Skerrit was and still is shaken by what happened in Grenada!

My son used to tell me that I will never get anything accomplished if I continued to do a little here and a little there.

He used to say “finish one task first before attempting to start another, that way you can have everything done in less time”. He was right. Nothing will be complete by doing piece, by piece.

The PM is working, but the work is all spread out. I think that whatever monies that are available should be put into one project and when that project is complete then you should move on to another. I think the people will credit you differently. I still think you have served your purpose, someone else should take the reign. Put parties aside for a moment and find a person suitable for the job.

In my opinion, the citizens should get an underdog and blindside EVERYONE regardless to party affiliation to move us FORWARD.

  6. February 26, 2013

Apparently the people are voting for a PARTY and not a LEADER. I do not think any one man should be in office for more than two terms; however, the political law in the Caribbean is different from other countries.

This is a PAID for PERFORMANCE job. The leader of the Island should get rewarded for a job well done. I think those that are not stuck up on party, and are interested in seeing the Island move FORWARD should decide if they want to keep who they have or find someone else to take them to the next level. We definitely need much IMPROVEMENT on ALL levels. STOP fighting over PARTIES and START working toward the BETTERMENT of the Island and it people.

This is a wise statement: “Put country before party and work towards the well being of our people.” It makes excellent sense.
Fellow Dominicans, please keep this in mind. Do not get carried away otherwise. Weigh everything, every word and every plan for Dominica carefully.

For a change I agree with you that all countries have different political circumstamces which decide the outcome of elections. How true! Definitely if the political circumstances we have endured in Dominica under your administration were semilar in Grenada or SLU, the government would have been kicked out long time. The only reason why you are still the PM is because our people have proven to be less politically educated and they like to beg.

On a different note sir, why are you speaking on regional election and fail to address us on important issues like: the millions of $ you wasted on Melvillehall? The Millions you gave to Liat and now AA is on their way out, you could not convince Liat to replace AA with a non stop route from SJU-Dominica? The embarrassment you caused us when you replaced AA with a 34 seater flight, with 2 pilots and 1 hostess? Why not tell us how many pounds of luggage allowed…could it be one bag with no more than 25lbs? Surely we would much rather here you speak the truth on subjects of national importance like: the villas, the Christmas day fire bombing and the where abouts of Seco, the IPO issue, the illegal president just to name a few from a very, very, very long list of unanswered questions.

What next, you talking pure crap. The PM or for that matter any caribbean head of State had nothing to do with AE not flying anymore. American Eagle has decided to cease its operations to ALL the Islands including the US Virgin Islands.AA do not owe us an apology or a reason for what they do, its their decision. We must thank God for LIAT for no matter how unreliable they are we can depend on them. All other airlines come and go but LIAT is always there and will always be there. I think all the other Caribbean Islands should follow Skerritt and invest in LIAT because LIAT belongs to us and will always be around.

      • De Momou are talk
        February 26, 2013

BVIslander, you talking pure crap! on to of that, you did not understand a thing I said. FYI, I did not blame the PM for AE not flying anymore and I sure did not ask them for an apology. Where did you get this crap? Did you just take your morning tablet? I blamed the PM for not putting Dominica in a position where we could replace AE with either a similar flight or something bigger. By this I mean, AE not going to STV does not hurt them because they put the mechanism in place to accomodate bigger airlines and the same is true with SLU, GND. While other islands took necessary steps based on foresight, unlike us in DA that have to be humbled by a 34 seater flight, thanks to Ross University. Re the Liat issue, my point is, after we poured millions into Liat, now that AE is leaving us, THE GOVERNMENT OF DOMINICA could not even at list convince Liat to take up the SLU/ Dominica route because they do have a much bigger Aircraft than Seabourne. I hope your tablet is working now and you understand my point.

HERE WE GO AGAIN, GIVING THE WORLD A BAD IMPRESSION OF DOMINICA AND ITS PEOPLE. The majority of comments, that DNO has allowed to be posted, speak very poorly about the degree of intelligence of us as a people.

Mr. Tony Astaphan took the IPO to task. He criticized the IPO for its determination to go ahead with its (the IPO’s) inquiry of the matter involving the PM. He stated that the IPO should have realized that it cannot go ahead because the counsel for the PM had taken certain legal steps.__ Steps that are afford by the LAW.

That’s what presented here for debate/comment. But some of my compatriots seem to be educated into imbecility (borrowing from G.K. Chesterton); and rushed with all their nonsense. If Tony is right don’t attack him; He’s a genius. IF he’s wrong, it’s the job of all lawyers to ‘spin’.

I’ve said it many times before. When you decide to write, be certain you have something worthwile to say. If you were among those who used to stone teachers when you were a student, go back to school. Or, you should ask someone more intelligent to help you. Also, don’t let your affiliation to any party or hatred of anyone cause you to speak and act as a fool.

And at last I’m waiting for some ad hominems; since very few of those who posted the thirty plus comments seem capable of dealing with the matter on the table. So please dont’ let your comments on my comment prove me right.

“Oh how you made my day!” Or should I say: ” You, and others like you, make all intelligent Dominicans look bad. Do some good for the country; don’t allow your ignorance, hatred and, want your Party to get back in power at all cost, cause you to post silly comments.

Speaking about your so called intellectuals, they are not in a position to teach me anything about writing. Just look at my style of writing and will see that I’m not as foolish as you think.

When I listen to the radio or even here on DNO I get the impression that we are being asked to repeat ourselves without option. It seems like as we were told to do in 2000 we are being asked to do the same in 2014. We were told to get the UWP out at all cost because they were corrupt and we had to take our country back, well we did and look where we are today being asked to take it back again. Now we are being told to get the DLP out at all cost, this sounds like we are being tricked or forced to vote through desperation and through that, makes choices that we regrets. History may repeat itself because once these politicians see that we appear to have our backs against the walls then they come into power and thinks we have nowhere to turn so they free to do as they wish. I say get new players into the game and not the same crooks, they can use a party name but new people. The UWP seem to be playing that game of the people are frustrated they want change so we have a chance and we the people feel like we are going to get magic development in Dominica this time around, well am not excited. Positive plans, programs, strategy, vision a way forward is what should interest us not that we need to remove this government at all cost, don’t give me that leave the pot and jump in the fire mentality. Then again I don’t expect any better beacuse many people can’t see it that way all they care about is get them out just as the dame asked to do in 2000.

You must be some sort of magician who can also tell the future.
Keep this in mind. You know what you have but you do not know what you will get. Some of you do not think. Be smart and utilize your common sense.
If UWP wins, they will get the benefit of all what the PM did. It will not be jubilation for them after all. They will be trying to build on what was already built. There will be no challenge there for them.
What can they offer Dominican nationals that they do not presently have and will get under the current PM? That is the question.

      • February 26, 2013

What Skerrit got was not for Dominicans if it was so many folks wouldnt be out of a job our nationals would be better off so dont give me that I guess you a in a better place so you dont care about your people and if UWP wins what they get goes to the people or if the Citizen Forum wins is the sme thing so stop the nonsensical comments.

It’s good to know that the gentleman can give advice to the newly elected leaders of Barbados and Grenada.
He said, “Focus on strengthening your economies, no time to engage in partisan politics, time to rise to the occasion of recognizing that we have to put country before party, and work towards the well being of the people”. Beautiful words indeed. Wow! I just can’t believe what was said. Do we really practice what we preach here? I just can’t believe the disconnect, maybe someone can explain to me.

All I know is, the gentleman leads and facilitates partisan politics. How can he put country first, when he can’t be stop by the IPO, or any law of the land to include the Constitution?

It begins with “RESPECT FOR THE LAW”. That’s how you put country first, by demonstrating that you are not above the law Sir! We are all equal under the law with the exception of your thoughts.

Such arrogance can only go so far, and the people to include many who once supported you, are now seing the lies and deceit that have become the hallmark of your leadership style of governance.

Did you even wonder what was the context that occasioned the man’s remarks. You guys so quick to judge. If you look at the by-line, you will see the source of the report. If you at all attempted to give the man a fair chance, you’d have to conclude that this response must have been one in a range of topics and questions that the man had to field. But I guess is Skeritt so time to pile on.

So the PM cannot get a loan to have investments?

This shows how badly planned other heads of government in Dominica were!!!!!

No wonder they want to get back into office to do like Skerrit!!

Only now all you eyes open?

Stop running women and all you can have investments as well.

Be patient Candominican. All these and more will be dealt with. In the meanwhile, while you are waiting, ask the opposition to stop its shenanigans regarding the IPO Commission and the present matters before it. They only serve to frustrate and prolong the process.
