Political parties to dialogue on economy

forumThe two major political parties in Dominica are expected to face each other on the economy in a political forum organized by the Dominica State College Journalism Club.

The forum is to take place on Thursday (today) with the topic “The Promise of the National Economy; A Hope for the Youth.”

“In light of the budding elections season, the students of the journalism club feel that it is imperative that the leaders, or prospective leaders of the nation dialogue with the young electorate,” the club said.

Leaders from the Dominica Labor Party as well as the United Workers Party have both confirmed their presence and will be sending an appropriate representative.

The forum will be moderated by Jaisiah Benoit, President of the National Youth Council.

This is not the first time the journalism club has organized such a political forum.

One was held in the previous election season in 2009 and the club has remained the only group on the island to bring leaders of the major political parties together.

The forum itself is a bi-annual event organized by the club for the past five years.

It consists of two parts: the panelists make a presentation to the audience, after which, is the interactive session where the students are given a chance to ask appropriate, relevant questions.

The club’s first semester forum on the legalization of marijuana was described as highly successful.

Today’s forum begins at 11:30 am at the Dominica State College Auditorium.

I’m not exactly considered a youth anymore, but my Dominican pride was just boosted by this youth initiative.
I’m happy to point out that although adults having been asking for this for a while, it was being treated as petty and has been basically ignored, but as soon as the youth, the future of the country calls for it, then it’s taken seriously and something is done about it.
Youth of Dominica, you are a powerful sect in the country and you have the ability to work together to better the country. You have started out in a good way with this request. I offer you my support to continue. Pull together, inform yourselves, and make your leaders, your public servants (from captain to cook), work for you.

    Good job.

“Woe unto the country where the youth is passive and afraid”; a quote from Chilean national poet Pablo Neruda. Finally, the youth of this blessed land have agreed to take their rightful place in society!! It was time passed for political discussions to be conducted on REASONED arguments rather than the usual mud slinging and “mepuis” we have grown accept in Dominica. No praise is too much for the members of the College Journalism Club!!

    HOTEP!

Very positive move by the DSC students. This is an indication that our youths are very aware of the numerous issues and challenges facing the country and are looking for guidance and leadership. Let me see who will represent the Labour party.

Skerrit must show up cause this election is not a guaranteed win for him like the others, he needs to work very hard this time.

Both leaders have agreed to send a representative. Sounds interesting DSC,THAT’S THE WAY,very polite and docile;not like those that DEMAND who should debate who and when they want their debates called.

Skerirt will not appear. He will send someone else. Would you send Skerrit to debate Linton? Can Skerrit debate or insult his slaves like you?

Kudos to the youth club..while I am neither Red, Blue nor Green, I will be listening if it is live. And if it is not live I will surely read about it..I think it’s only fair that this is being done and by the future leaders of our Isle of Beauty…

I love this. An unbiased party throwing the parties into a situation where concrete arguments must be made instead of the usual inflaming rhetoric!!!!

Great job DSC and I can’t wait to read the summaries. This will help undecided voters make informed decision and decided voters convinced or questions.

We will see and best of luck to both parties!

I dont trust Jaisiah Benoit, President of the National Youth Council and it would not suprise me if all his questions were already given to his fellow party members from the DLP

I will wait and see how it unfolds
