Agriculture is not dead – Matthew

Section of the rally on Monday
Section of the rally on Monday

Minister of agriculture, Matthew Walter, is dismissing claims that agriculture is dead saying the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has invested more in the sector than any other government in the history of the island.

“They are saying agriculture is dead but, my dear friends, anything that is dead cannot stand up,” he told a DLP rally in St. Joseph on Monday.

According to Walter there is evidence that agriculture is doing well in Dominica “because we have enough food to export.”

“So any country that has food to export, it is indicative that this country is doing well in agriculture,” he stated. “Food security is a most important aspect of agriculture, to be able to feed a people of a nation, and we feeding of the people of the nation, therefore agriculture is doing well.”

He stated that the government is embarking on a coffee plant, an abbatoir, a joint venture with the Chinese in a Dominica/China Modern Agricultural Center, a diversification program and a packing house, where “farmers will be able to sell more.”

He further said a meeting was held recently with WINFRESH which “has agreed to invest millions of dollars in the agro processing subsector of this country.”

“I have so much to tell you about agriculture but time is limited …” Matthew said.

Meanwhile, minister for tourism and legal affairs, Ian Douglas, told the crowd that an international airport will become a reality under a DLP administration.

“Under United Workers Party, they promised us a fake international airport… a fairy tale international airport,” he said. “Roosevelt Skerrit has told you that because of his friendship with China, the international aiport will become a reality in the next term of our government.”

Despite the current controvesy swirling around the government’s geothermal project Douglas also said geothermal energy will become a reality in Dominica.

“Only this government has the credibility around the world, only this government has the respect around the world to bring donors together to make geothermal energy a reality,” he stated. “If we change gears now we going back to the dark ages. We cannot afford to go back to the dark ages…we have to look forward to towards the light…I want to assure you that in the next term of our office, our next term of government, geothermal energy will become a reality.”

Agriculture today is not how it was back then, the government needs to do more for the farmers. Where are the markets, where have the hucksters gone.Too much emphasis is placed on tourism, and what exactly does the country have to attract tourists, not enough.

      Stop fooling the people.
The world has moved beyond the agricultural economy.
We now have a service economy.
Most agriculture is subsidized where as tourism is not.

When a Government Minister, especially an outgoing minister for agriculture is spending precious time dismissing claims that the ministry he is responsible for is dead, you know he agrees and knows that it is indeed very dead. No wonder he calling it a day in politics. A successful Minister would not even have to dismiss claims but would rather spend more time highlighting the healthy state of the ministry and the bright future that awaits it. As proof that Agriculture is dead, I invite the nation to take a drive to the village of Paix-Bouche, which is being represented by Mr. Walter and tell me if you can find at list one young person .between the ages of 18-45 that is involved in agriculture and depends on it for a future. Not one! Yes you will find a handful of 50 yrs up doing very light farming because they can do no better but generally speaking they have all given up on agriculture. To further prove my point, I challenge anyone to go to the Portsmouth market on a Saturday and tell me if you will see anyone from Paix-Bouche selling produce at the market. That was not the case in the 90′s under DFP and UWP as agriculture was alive in Paix-Bouche. So if the man could not save agriculture in his own village, how do you expect him to save it in Dominica?

I somewhat agree with Matthew Walter that agriculture is not dead in Dominica. However, it is very safe to say that it is in a coma or lagony and if we have to take another year of the DLP it sure will die and buried. That’s what the outgoing minister has foreseen and is bailout from the ship knowing very well that not only will agriculture die but Dominica on itself will finish and gone goodbye. That’s what makes this election so very important as it is an election between death and life for Dominica and only us, can save our beautiful country from total disaster. So it is not about DLP or UWP but death and life and the choice is ours to vote for the survival of our country and Team Dominica is the ONLY party in this race that offers

why cant you make it your business to inform our people on radio programme about the state of the industry on a fortnightly or monthly basis.

If agriculture is not dead why is it that the financial secretary finds it so difficult to spend money in that sector? This is because the people in finance can see that agriculture is a no profit entity. Even permanent secretaries who were in agriculture say that agriculture is dead. After the minister sat and did nothing to fight for the cause of agriculture now he talking when he is about calling it quits from active politics? And this international airport, didn’t these same guys say that we do not need one? And that the night landing facility at Melleville Hall is sufficient. Are we for real in this country?

Why everything we have to do in Dominica have to have a link with China, why, why, why. I know China have so much poverty and the Bible said charity begins at home. Why is China involved in Every sensitive part of Dominica. I think sooner or later, We in Dominica will be controlled by these Chinese.

Dominican’s pay attention, when you sell all of your land for Chinese, you bet they will be well grounded and settled. I know nothing in life is free. Mark my words Dominica will be eventually owned by Chinese.

Do you know what it means to own something, is Dominica really owned by the Chinese, something to ponder on when you are awake.

What is this nonsense about make your words, your words are cheap and meaningless. There are a lot of things you simply do not understand. The biblical quote you gave implies selfishness.
I would say to you charity begins at home, but should not end there, now there is a difference. Why do you have such a silly idea that Dominica will be eventually owned by Chinese such an idea has it roots in fear and ignorance.

    • May 7, 2014

@enjoy May 5, 2014 “the Bible said “charity begins at home”

Sorry to spoil your enjoyment, but there is no such quote in the Bible. I am sure of that; but if I have missed something that you found in the Bible, please tell me, what is the Book the chapter, and the verse number–that is something we must do when we say the Bible said:

And I mean the exact words that you spoke here.

During the State College forum, Dr. Aaron felt that Dominica’s survival had to be Geothermal, Geothermal, Geothermal. I viewed and listened to the DLP rally in St. Joseph. The Prime Minister spoke at length concerning many developments for Dominica and I am wondering what has happened to all the plans for cheaper electricity through Geothermal. No one at the rally even mentioned anything about the project. Is it because of Mr. Martin’s declaration. I hope it isn’t the end of that project, after having spent approximately $50 million.

Minister Matthew I endorse and believe all what you stated and that the plans for Dominica will come to fruition in time.
Agriculture can never be dead, once there are farmers, fertile land, rain and sun and those who are willing to work hard. Most of all there is a God above who looks down on D/ca, on his people and helps them. They will never be without.
As for the international airport, we are all looking forward to its commencement and completion. I realize that it will cost a lot and will take some years.
I pray God that I will be alive and healthy to witness this. It will be a jubilation for every resident Dominican and those as I who reside abroad and to be part of it.
I recognize that nothing happens before its time and everything takes time. Ample money is necessary to build this massive undertaking of an international airport. Patience and cooperation are required by all.
God bless the PM and DLP politicians as you. I wish you overall success. God bless all other nationals. Keep in mind God conquers all. God governs the world and sincere fervent prayers govern God.
The Holy Rosary, the Mysteries of the Life, Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord is being prayed on the US Catholic Radio. As I pray for myself, my family and friends, I am also praying for Dominca and the reigning DLP Party to be successful in the next election, that your plans will be accomplished. I will continue to do so.
Those who do not love you, hate you and criticize you, may they cease exercising their adverse attitude toward you for it is not pleasing to the Lord.
Apres Bon Dieu C’est La Terre. This is the Motto of Dominica with the beautiful Sisserou Parrot which all Dominicans should be proud of.
Especially resident Dominicans who presently have the benefit of residing in D/ca, be appreciative and grateful, most of all to the Lord. Times are not as bad as some appear to make it out to be. It really could be worse when we consider some people of certain foreign countries. They do not know how good they have it.
    God bless all!

The remaining farmers in Dominica is only farming because that’s what they do but a farmer can’t even break even he/she is always investing more than the returns on the investment. They killed agri and put their focus and resources on tourism to benefit a selected few of campaign financiers.

      May 7, 2014

Let us face reality. How many people, their family members who want to grow crops? This has been ongoing for a long time. Most of them study, some remain abroad and work. Others in D/ca want to work in offices. They do not want to reside in the country and grow crops. Some of the farmers may be ill; may be aged and others passed on. These are a few issues of the current situation.

  28. Oh No
    May 5, 2014

If this is the best yardstick Matthew Walter can use to measure the strength of agriculture in Dominica he is mischievous because huckstering has traditionally been a means of distribution for many a huckster. There are other measuring factors involved such as the number of farmers still active in agriculture, the value of exports measured over, say the last fifteen years, the percentage and dollar value of agriculture to the country’s GDP over the last fifteen years and the various crop subsegments such as the contribution from bananas, citrus, ground provisions etc, just to name a few.
Ian’s proposition is hopeless since it’s been almost two decades the Labour party has failed to deliver an international airport. Dominica has needed this facility forever. The UWP in all fairness made concrete steps at constructing an international airport. These vocalization is all empty, that is “empty barrels make the most noise”

The UWP only spent 41/2 years in government compare to Labour Party 14 plus years. With all these years in Government has done little to find market for the crops that are harvested. They are not encouraging people to go into agriculture. The government only want to rely on Tourism .

Matthew Walter claims,”We have enough food to export.” The same farmers oui all you cause to flee from the farm and agriculture, is those same people made poorer all you coming to again?

Priority is handouts, personal enrichment, quick wealth for a few, villas, passport selling, corrupt practices a plenty, instead of seriously organizing the agricultural sector and encouraging people to produce and earn their own money.

How much is exported? What is the quantity and how much do we earn from those exports of agricultural produce?

What is the present food import bill? Compare that with what is exported?

How many farmers have abandoned their fields? How many are still fighting it out with the meager support?

Where are the two boats to transport produce to Barbados?

Ask the farmers and their families if their standards of living has become better or are they facing more and more pressure?

How comes once thriving agricultural communities have been termed extremely poor these days? St. Joseph is a classic example of a community that has become poorer and poorer under the DLP Govt., because agriculture has been on the backburner.

2.“That was my former ministry and I expected the PM to do me that favor and grant me this ministry to continue the good work that I started and also to implement the projects that are relevant to the development of the agriculture sector which will cause a turnaround in the economy of this country.
Mr. Walter, did the said projects cause a turnaround in the economy of this country?

    3. I am very excited because I see prospects in the ministry of agriculture can be used as a vehicle that can create employment in the rural area, specifically in the areas of agri-tourim and primary agriculture, including greenhouse agriculture,” Walter told reporters.
Sir, Did you create employment in the rural areas as promised?

    4. According to Walter, who is also the member of parliament for Paix Bouche, the people of his constituency will get “the best” of him, since this is his last term.

Matthew, What has Dominica done to you? Why do you treat the people of Dominica the manner that you have been treating it? Just For politics? Mr. Matthew, as a person who claims to be involved in the Catholic Church which I am part of, please put politics aside and honestly and sincerely answer these questions: 1. How does Matthew Walter compare to the leadership and vision of Skerrit to that of the leadership and vision of the DLP? 2. Matthew, knowing what we know about Rosie, how do you honestly believe Rosie would feel about the direction in which Skerrit has taken Dominica? 3.Matthew, how is it you have so much to say now about agriculture, which sadly, you will agree died under your watch and was unable to implement one single step to save it? 4. Matthew, since you and all of us agree you failed miserably as any minister let alone agriculture, and now you have so much god advise and a brighter future for agriculture, why then are you calling it a day now? Why not wait a little longer to see the coffee plant open? A little longer for the multi-million dollar Dominica Chinese Modern Agricultural Center open this year? Why not stay until the abattoir takes legs? Why the rush now? Is it that you do not want to be seen as a successful minister? Or, Is it that you cannot take more of the foolishness of Skeerit? If that’s the case, why put Roselyn in that mess? Or is it that you see failure slapping you right on the face so you escaping early? Please tell us the truth

Does the dead know what is not dead? Matthew must say Agriculture is not dead because he is a dead minister himself.
