Alleyne rubbishes claims he was not interested in Chief Justice post

Alleyne

Did Sir Brian Alleyne, as then Acting Chief Justice of the OECS Supreme Court indicate that he was not interested in the substantive post of Chief Justice.

That’s what Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has been telling reporters.

At a news conference on Monday, PM SKerrit said Dominica had been prepared to back Sir Brian’s candidacy for the position.

He was responding to media queries about his suggestion that there was no political influence in the judiciary in the sub-region.

“There’s absolutely no political involvement in the courts in our jurisdiction,” the prime minister said.

Prime Minister Skerrit was reminded that Sir Brian remained Acting in the post of Chief Justice, allegedly because Grenada, and more specifically then Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, stood in the way of him being confirmed in the position.

“Sir Brian had indicated to us that he had no interest in being appointed in the post, at a meeting, that’s before Grenada indicated its objection,” PM Skerrit insisted when taken up on that matter by a DNO reporter.

“That is a fact, you can consult other prime ministers if you wish.  As prime minister at the time I would have loved to have a Dominican as head of the OECS Supreme Court,” the Dominican leader told reporters.

However Sir Brian Alleyne has rubbished PM Skerrit’s claims.

The former jurist said he was available for the position, once he realized that the man who held the substantive post, Sir Dennis Byron, was no longer returning to the position and the acting position that he Sir Brian held could be turned into a more permanent arrangement.

He denied categorically telling OECS heads of government that he was not interested in the position of Chief Justice.

Sir Brian also told DNO that while he could not say that Grenada’s objection to him being made chief justice was THE stumbling block, he had had occasional conversations with then Grenada prime minister Keith Mitchel who made it clear on those occasions that he was not happy with some of the decisions Sir Brian had taken while serving as a judge in Grenada.

Sir Brian served as acting Chief Justice of the OECS Supreme Court from 2005 to 2007.

When did “rubbish” become a verb? I could not pass this headline to venture to read this article.

      March 28, 2012

I can’t tell you when it became a verb but it definitely is listed as such in the Oxford English Dictionary, meaning:”to criticize and reject as worthless”. If you are in the U.S.A. you may not be familiar with the usage of the word in this form.

        March 30, 2012

Even if that were the case the usage here is still misplaced.

I believe Skerrit anytime. Brian is a politician and is too bias to be Chief Justice. Let him follow his UWPites. Skerrit stay firm. Have no fear! Mamo was right.

Skerrit contradicts himself in this very article:
““There’s absolutely no political involvement in the courts in our jurisdiction,” the prime minister said
    Yet
““Sir Brian had indicated to us that he had no interest in being appointed in the post, at a meeting, that’s before Grenada indicated its objection,” PM Skerrit insisted

Where are going with that? Will it bring down Skerrit? Those who think so better thonk again. We all know that most of those who today are championing Brian’s cause as a pillar of what is right and never wrong were the very same ones who quoted Mamo over and over again when she worked tirelessly to prevent Brian from becoming Prime Minister. How strange human beings are.

NOW HE WANT TO GIVE OUR PM STRESS. TELL HIM WHEEL AND COME AGAIN

DNO said the question was raised in a press conference where a reporter ask the prime minister the question. Should he or shouldn’t he answer to what he think or know? I can’t see what all the fuss is about.

Skerrit, leave our Sir Brian alone! Why you trying to pick a fight with him? Is it because he puts you to shame by his demeanor, his humility, his honesty and his commitment to do what is right and fair and to put country first? Is it because he cannot be bought by you and is not afraid to speak out against wrong in the country?

You seem to forget that mr. Skerrit was part of the the Dominica Freedom Party himself when he was a member of its youth arm, the Young Freedom Movement and before he was “induced” by Rosie Douglas to swop his allegiance. Anyway, what is really breathtaking is the blithe arrogance that suggests that he knows better what was in Sir Brian’s mind than Sir Brian himself!

    March 27, 2012

I believe Sire Brain, the man was in the position as acting why would he not be interested in it as a permanent. who in their right mind want a acting position but then its becomes available says they don’t want it..I mean come one. anyone with a tiny bit of common sense would know that was not true.

Saying the man was not intrested. Pleaaaseeee
