Apologizing is in my DNA – Lugay

Lugay greets supporters after his court appearance on Thursday
Lugay greets supporters after his court appearance on Thursday

United Workers Party (UWP) senator, Danny Lugay, has said apologizing for his transgressions is something he is not ashamed of doing.

Speaking at a public meeting of his party on Thursday evening, following his arrest earlier in the day, Lugay said many supporters told him his statements at a UWP meeting in Soufriere recently were not right.

He stated that they told him they were disappointed in him and he accepted the fact that he was wrong.

“I accepted my wrong and I stepped up to the plate and apologized,” he stated. “It is in my DNA, anytime I am wrong, I am not ashamed to apologize. I wish others would take a note from that.”

Lugay, who is also the UWP candidate for Roseau North, said the experience has made him stronger.

“I am willing to go through the fire for Roseau North,” he said. “I have learnt to appreciate Roseau North more and more….”

Meanwhile senior counsel, Tony Astaphan, has commended the police for taking what he as described as “decisive action” in the matter.

“Enough is enough,” he told state-owned DBS Radio. “The time has come, and the time has indeed come, for decisive actions to be taken against those in the political arena and elsewhere who threaten the lives of others or incite the murder and the killing of specific individuals.”

He said if a member of the public, who is not involved in any political party, had said something similar and identify the intended victim, the police would have acted as well.

He stated that the person mentioned in the matter has been “placed under great fear, uncertainty and anxiety.”

“I am grateful the police have in fact acted,” Astaphan said.

Lugay was arrested and charged on Thursday with inciting murder of attorney Alick Lawrence arising from statements which he made at UWP political meeting in Soufriere.

He was granted bail in the sum of $8,000 with one surety.

I must take some time to share my piece,I am David,Daniel’s older brother, living in Boston MA.I do not condone my brother’s statement or any person inciting violence, and we must at all times exercise caution even in times of disagreement or disapproval.Again I emphasize I did not agree with my brothers statement, however, there is no history in our family of criminal acts of violence or encouraging it or promoting it.I also want to make it clear that the true metal of a man is how he responds to adversity whether self made or encountered I know my brother recognizes his error, but he was man enough to apologise. Now a word to all politicians Proverbs 28:13 please take some time to read, also john 8:1-11 and any politician who has no sin cast the first stone as your time must come.In closing a word to you Mr Astaphan the judge of all will hold you also responsible for your partiality.

We all make mistakes .Having said that when u running to represent the people of your country you should be held responsible for your actions .Politicans should focus on making life better for the people they represent not to incite violent…..and to be a Christian to say these words is a NO NO….it is for both parties whether Labour or United Workers ,Hope lesson is learnt here

Government lawyer refers to opposition as Al Qaeda terrorists
    By the TDN Wire Staff
    March 17, 2013 6:10 P.M

Roseau, Dominica — Lennox Lawrence close confidant and lawyer for Dominica’s prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit has called for members of the Dominica Labour Party to “go after” members of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP).

The lawyer’s comments came as the DLP faithful celebrated the ruling of the OECS Supreme Court, which upheld a lower court ruling that the UWP failed to prove that Skerrit and his education minister Petter St Jean were French citizens.

Lawrence told the frenzied crowd gathered in Roseau “and like Obama is going after Al Qaeda, brothers and sisters. Whether they hide in Marigot, whether they hide in La Plaine, whether they hide in Salisbury, we Labourites are going after them.”

He also accused the Chronicle newspaper and local radio station Q 95 FM as engaging in terrorism., saying “we must bring an end to the terrorism of the chronicle and the terrorism of Q 95

This kind of statement should not come from the mouth of anyone, more so one in the public eye and a politician at that who represents people at the highest level. worst of all he calls himself a ‘believer’.

I agree fully. I was told by another believer that just thinking bad thoughts is already a sin. I was really surprised at Danny and the fact that he stated he is a believer that is why he will not do it himself. This is like wishing somebody else would kill but he will not do it himself. This statement is in poor taste and lacks intelligent thinking. Another thing, even if he apologized to the people for saying that, it does not mean that his words did not incite violence (or that his words were not taken seriously) by people who feel that it is ok to kill. The law is separate from human feelings, so in other words he paid for his tongue.

Anyone with the natural premonition to apologize when they wrong their brother man is a good person deserving of support. HOWEVER, to seek to explain the apology, to point to the perceived or actual wrong of others as justification for your “crime” or indiscretion will simply water down your apology. Accepting ones wrong is a wonderful personal threat. Danny, are you really remorseful? Perhaps you are! But, then why do you believe there are people out there who want to see you burn over this very matter?

The hypocricy and duplicity of the senior counsel is on full display in his comments on the Lugay matter.
He talks about the police arresting Lugay for threatening the life of another. How about actual attempted murder, Mr. Astaphan, of a retired magistrate, an incident in which you were intimately involved as the defence counsel for the suspect in this yet to be resloved crime.Any impartial observer will tell you that the use of inappropriate language for which Lugay apologized pales in comparison to the crime of physically attempting the murder of a senior citizen, a crime for which Mr. Astphan and his puppet, Mr. Skerrit, have yet to condemn and behaving as if a real murder attempt is less of a crime than ther use of appropriate language.
This politicization of the justice system in Dominica is among the worst of the legacy of this prime minister, a phenomenon which will be a substantial part of th legacy of his corrupt regime.

    Unbelievable! I am totally flabbergasted! This man is really in fairytale Land. Mr. Lugay, please wake up from your slumber, your political career is over. Attempting to right your wrong by self praise for an apology is absurd. You have stooped to the lowest of low, and so we will not sit idly until you are terminated. You should not be allowed to attend Parliament next week. As law abiding citizens we cannot condone this outrageous behavior. Mr. Lugay, an apology is accepted, however, we must remind citizens that we cannot preach violence and then try to erase the pain with an apology. There is no way that I am going to allow a man to remain in my life who has threatened me. Do I say, that he has apologized, and that apology is in his DNA, he should be given a second chance. Step aside Danny!;

Danny has done the right thing. He has apologised, and THIS IS WHAT MEN DO? Skerrit and Lennox Lawrence have to take a page from Danny’s book, because the electorate will DO THE RIGHT THING THIS TIME AROUND….
Here is the vilolence that was preached:
By Skerrit: Man to Man we Can Marsh Them Up! Referring to UWPites. Woman To Woman We Can Marsh Them Up!
Lennox Lawrence: We will go after them in Marigot, Salisbury etc in the same way Obama is going after Al Queda.
Were you DOTISH OR MOO MOO when these pieces of violence were being preached? You really seem to be too morally deficient to tell Danny or anyone whatsoever what to do!

It is obvious that what Tone wants he gets, Tone is the President, Prime Minister, Attorney General, Commissioner of Police, Solicitor General, Judge, Jury and even the Bishop in Dominica. This man is setting a chain of events that he will regret one day. Tone if you foresee a peaceful Dominica do the right thing now to secure a peaceful Dominica, but what you are doing now, knowing that this administration is guilty of so many things and instead of cautioning them you are helping them to continue in their mess, Tone you are going to harvest an angry Dominica and guess who is going to be in control….. this generation who has grown up and are adults, who during your rant and rave supporting this government, remained quiet, persons thought they were not listening, the young, hungry, unemployed, frustrated men were listening but now they come out!!!!!!!!!! God have mercy on Dominica. What you sow now Tone is what you gonna reap.

    Danny Lugay,
You’ve apologized, you were contrite and regretted the unfortunate statements you made. We are very happy you took responsibility for your action. Therefore, we as a people forgive you.

Now let’s closely look at what we are dealing with. The Laborites, comfortable with all the lies, deceitfulness and blatant hypocrisy to include threats made by Lennox Lawrence and others, who believe they are above the law.

The politicized police force choose to execute orders from their masters T. Astaphan and Roosevelt Skerrit instead of upholding the constitution and law of the land, and protect the citizens’ rights. Change is a must not an option.

I think All politicians should take a course in public speaking. The Toast Masters Club do have a great program.

And it is alright to adopt a protocol that has been established by previous speakers at the function when addressing dignitaries. There is no need to for every speaker to call out the names and position of every dignitary – yes you can say ” i adopt the protocol already set”

The police should now arrest Lawrence for his statements as well; and others who have done the same. Well Mr Astaphan seem to be getting his way in everything, and controls Dominica. He can go on radio, on political platforms say what he wants, and no one takes action against him.
We are being asked to celebrate our emancipation but are we really emancipated? when we live in a country where some shall eat; some can say what they want; do us what they want and we are subjected to all of this oppression from a few men.

Ok DNO I am going to give this one more try, reason why I am saying this is because somehow my comments lament somewhere on your site for ever awaiting moderation, then it SUDENLY disappears. Like I have already stated the statement this this senator said was not becoming as a public figure. But it blew my mind away when I read later on that this same Lawyer who it is aledged that the statements referred has in tha past made worse statements than the one Mr. Lugay made and nothing was done to him. In fact several other public figures has made similar atatements and they were even asked to apologize. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Tell Tony go to the Middle East and act the way he acts, or ask his PM to act the way they act and see if he or his PM can get away with the crap that they do. How can the highest elected official in the land tell people ” go to hell and no law or constitution can stop him” and he is not asked to apologize to the citizens. Don’t they take an oath to uphold the law at swearing in? If our society is supposed to be a civilized one people will on occasion make mistakes like Mr. Lugay did. But if he call a specific name and say kill that person I really see the point I. Arresting, charging and wasting time in a court of law especially after he humbly apologized. But again my beloved country is becoming a lawless land, where if you do not belong to a certain group you are or will be persecuted. In closing you people from the DLP can say what you want or put all the thumbs down it dosen’t bothers me one bit. Now DNO let me see if this one is also going to disappear,

  32. Erasmus B. Black

‘Meanwhile, senior counsel Tony Astaphan has commended the police for what he described as “decisive action.” Per the current sitting US President, “you can’t make these things up folks!” “Meanwhile, the magistrate with the burnt house is still awaiting “decisive action.” Pitiful state of affairs indeed.

The Musical Group “Stealer’s Wheel” had a popular tune with the refrain, “clowns to the right of me, jokers to the left, here I am stuck in the middle with you!” These are the only lines that now come to mind. Recall that last week, the member for Cottage was asking nationals to pray and light candles. That call should be heeded more than ever this weekend. Let us pary that the designs and methods now in play by a political party for winning every constituency does not put the lives of citizens in jeopardy. For, when a senior counsel can allegedly sit at a party strategy meeting and agree to block off all forms of access to a small island – by air, land, and sea, (among other forms of paranoia shenanigans) in order to win an election – is a matter for some divine intervention.

To me, the biggest joke of all this Lugay’s fiasco was when I heard on radio, Regie saying because of Mr. Lugay’s statement he is afraid for his life. The man referred to himself as a Rottweiler, for the information of those who don’t know, a Rottweiler is a very bad dog. The man said he did jungle training in the jungle of Guyana. Does Regie expect me to believe, a statement made by a religious blessed man have him running scared. If so, the end of the world is really upon us.
