UWP to host ‘concert for change’

Aaron said artistes are not free to express themselves in Dominica

The United Workers Party (UWP) Team Dominica said as part of its campaign for change a concert has been organized to be held at the Harlem Plaza in Newtown this Saturday.

It will be held under the banner of “The Dominican Artistes, Concert for Change”, and dubbed “A show that will change your life forever.”

The concert, which is being coordinated by prominent song writer, Pat Aaron, will feature reigning calypso King Dennison “Dice” Joseph, Road March King Mighty Omie, Vigilante, Boople, The Wave, Daddy Miller, Anwar Cadette, The Bobb, Mighty Acres, Soul Pouse and Nellie Elizee.

The show will also feature the Bouyon pioneers WCK, the Lucas Band from the Roseau Valley, Q95 contest winners, Leona and special appearances by UWP Candidate for the Roseau Valley, Ronald Charles and UWP Leader, Lennox Linton.

Although all artistes may not be able to perform, Aaron said at a press conference held at the Prevo Cinemall on Wednesday, that he expects every one of them to be present.

“Every artiste may not be able to perform, but we want every artiste to come backstage and show themselves on stage,” he said.

According to him, in Dominica the freedom and liberty of artistes are at stake and they are not free to sing what is in their hearts.

“We have really lost our way,” he said. “We have been on the highway, we took an exit, we took the wrong exit and because of our hard head, Dominicans, we maintained our speed down the wrong exit hoping that we will get where we are going and with every foot, and every inch and every mile that we move we are moving further away from our destination. We are lost.”

He stated that there are many artistes in Dominica who prefer to remain silent “because they figure they will lose what they have, when really they have nothing to lose.”

He accused prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, of trying to establish himself as a dictator.

“What we are facing in Dominica is not Labour against Freedom or against UWP, this is a man who is trying to establish himself as a dictator and is using the party that is more available to him because many of the Labourites in Dominica they don’t think anymore, they just accept,” he stated.

Aaron also accused the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA) of being controlled by the government.

“I have seen so far that Calypso Association is under the influence of the oppressive regime in Dominica,” he stated. “The Calypso Association Executive is already controlled by the government of Dominica.”

He called on members of the executive in the DCA to examine themselves and decide what they are.

“Are you an artiste or are you an imposter?” he said.

On the night of the show, contributions will be accepted at the gate.

It is expected to begin at 7:00pm.

I just find all of this very childish. Whose function was organised first? The launching/Beres Hammond show or the Concert? Why would the two parties have a function on the same evening? I agree that in some ways it is a competition but this approach just seems to be the norm these days. Constitutional Official budget day by the constitutionally appointed official pre-empted by another; Constitutionally appointed Parliament sidelined by a People’s Parliament; even the date for election required to be announced by the constitutionally appointed official preceded by speculative announcements from another source; calls for the same time given to the Government on DBS to be given to an opposition political party! Really childish and confrontational!

It’s a free country, if Mr. Aaron wants to campaign he is free to do that, why bring all artistes into your political melee? Then these same people turn around and accuse the other side of politicising everything. Just seems to be a case of don’t do it, let me do it!

What Dominicans want is something better! show us something better pleaseeeeeeeeee!

Checko – sued $180,000 to Ambassador A. Complete bullcrap since the man’s name was never called directly.

Dice – asked not to sing his most popular songs with political angles at WCMF

It doesn’t take much…you make an example of someone publically, and those on the come up will sit quietly. Vote for whoever you want people, but at least be real and honest about whats going on in your country.

If you choose to deny NOTHING is going on after witnessing the many BOGUS law suits against politicians, fire-bombing of a magistrate’s house, Tony Astaphan abusing his station using the police on fake trumped up charges against the IPO and Linton, then you are worse than Skerritt because you will choose to uphold any oppressor over your people.

I use to wonder how black people – such a strong and mighty race – could be kept in bondage for centuries, but hearing the apologists makes me realize Dominicans would easily sell their brothers and sisters for a pint of rum or some quick cash!

It’s always amazing when I keep reading how Dominicans think they are not free. They should come to the US to see what it is like. The things Dominicans get away with saying would never happen elsewhere. Where else In the world can someone say the “prime minister has to go by any means necessary” and not have the police on their doorstep investigating, yet in Dominica we boldly post this online then we say our freedom of speech is being trampled upon.

Pat you have to be a Joker to think that a government sponsored event that attracts international population to allow an artist to campaign for the opposition UWP. Dice song is the theme song for UWP and has no place in such an event! International artist have set high standards and establish themselves when Dominican artist get to that level they will demand bigger payday! Stop with your ignorance Pat!

So Pat just as it has seem to some over the years, the judges were bought and paid for that’s why Dice won over the years. Because if as you say the singers cant express themselves anymore all those blue party songs you gave Dice to sing why would they give him crown all those years, does that add up for a tax man?

Are you under the influence of the UWP? Pat Aaron wake up and smell the coffee. You are very insultive to say that Labourites in Dominica don’t think anymore they just accept. Are UWPites the only thinking Dominicans ? pat wheel and come again and keep dreaming .Get a big wash cloth to dry your tears when you all loose the Election again.

I like calypso but Pat must understand that the Pot cannot tell the pan that its bottom is black. If you are not using calypsonians for your self engrandizement, tell Dominicans what proportion of the calysonians winnings you keep for yourself, and what you they receive!! Ah Magway sa. Its all about the love of money! You all want to have big houses and fancy this and that and politicians must be poor. Seriously Dominicans, do you all even trust Lennox? His arrogance, his hastiness, his flip flopping, his pompousness? Even his stupidity – telling Dominicans that he will be going around the country to make himself known? At that time, you are not yet known, Lennox? That should speak for itself….LOL

Pat , I don’t know you personally but I have heard of you and the great talent which you possess. However in my opinion I believe. You should be more careful in making certain statements. I do respect your talent and I am also convinced that you are an educated individual, on the other hand I believe you should also be respectful to persons in high office.. You should know this as well. Your statements are very bold and lacking balance , I believe a lot of persons in dominica are free in expressing themselves. After all we are West Indian and this is a major part of our characteristic, calypsonians for eg, have expressed themselves over and over again.. Dice in his recent calypso. Cool pipe. Leona. Black diamond, and the list goes on.. Many sang about the pm directly eg. Mighty DBS , call skerit for me, I decide to call skerit and tell him I cannot pay that.. So please really think before you make such statements.and if this us not bold expression… We’ll I don’t know what else it ca be… . Thank you…
