Brisbane calls on Dominicans for support as he prepares to submit petition

Dominican businessman Jerry Brisbane is appealing to Dominicans to stand up for justice and truth as the days wind down before he presents a petition to President Nicholas Liverpool and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, calling for resignation of Minister for Labour Charles Savarin.

Savarin last month called on the nation to boycott Brisbane’s company O.D. Brisbane & Sons after Brisbane sent letters to international organisations expressing issues with Dominica’s use of aid money.

Brisbane, who has been seeking the signatures of Dominicans in support of his call for Savarin’s removal from office said Wednesday that the support of Dominicans will show that they are ready for “things to change in this country”.

“I signed this petition so that they could be sending a strong message to the government that enough is enough, we have had enough of this, and the time has come for government to change course,” Brisbane said.

Savarin has been defending his call for a boycott of O.D. Brisbane, a company serving Dominicans for over 50 years now. Savarin said
Brisbane’s letter is asking international donors to stop assisting Dominica, but Brisbane has contended, saying his letters to the European Union and the People’s Republic of China have asked for a review of the process by which funds are given or loaned to Dominica since some of the monies, according to Brisbane, are being used inappropriately.

The number of signatures on the petition which is to be presented Friday is increasing, and a final count is expected by Thursday evening, according to Brisbane.

He has called on individuals to turn in signed forms and is appealing to those who have not signed the petition to do so by Thursday.

Curious about this one. Most sensible response so far is from A Voice; clear and fair. But just what evidence does Mr. Brisbane have for pointing a finger on misappropriation of donor funds? Could this evidence (if it exists) be made known before jumping into speculations as to whose interests are being pursued? I find too many of the comments are politicized and hitting on personalities besides the real issue.

    BRISBANE,

IT SHOULD BE THE OTHER WAY AROUND. INSTEAD OF YOU CALLING FOR A PETITION TO OUST MR SAVARIN, THE PEOPLE OF DOMINICA SHOULD BE PETITIONING TO KICK YOUR SICK SELF OUT OF DOMINICA. IT’S BECAUSE OF THINGS LIKE YOU WHY THERE ARE SO MUCH CRIME IN MANY COUNTRIES. FOR ALL THAT YOU DO IS TO ENTICE MORE CRIME IN DOMINICA. YOU HAVE COMMITTED THE SAME CRIME AS THE GUY WHICH THEY NOW HAVE IN JAIL IN LONDON FOR PUTTING SENSITIVE DOCUMENTS ON THE INTERNET. YET INSTEAD OF YOU BEING AT THE STOCK FARM JAIL WHERE YOU BELONG FOR INCRIMINATING THE GOVT OF DOMINICA, YOU ARE CALLING FOR THE EXPULSION OF ONE OF IT’S MINISTERS WHO HAS DECIDED TO STAND UP TO YOU. THIS CAN ONLY HAPPEN IN D/CA FOR YOU AS WELL AS THE UWP ARE ONLY PRAYING ON THE WEAK MINDS OF DOMINICANS. I SINCERELY HOPE THIS TIME THAT THEY CAN SEE THROUGH YOU AND THE UWP AND TELL YOU ALL WHERE TO GO. NOT TO HELL, FOR IT’S MUCH TOO GOOD FOR YOU AND THE UWP..

I do not think that Charlo should have said what he said- at least not so loud; I gave him wrong for that; But like others before me have said, Jerry’s letters were tantamount to treason; Jerry needs to know that our domestic affairs had no right to reach that far; and by the way, what “domestic affairs” nah? just speculations! So what it boils down to is that: Charlo said out loud what most of us patriot Dominicans were feeling inside and planned to do anyway! But as a minister Charlo should not have said it out loud. He should have taken a leaf from Jerry’s book: use a public letter or forum to say what you really want to say but not in obvious words; that’s just what Jerry did in his letters.

I say we sign that paper and send a message to our representatives that they have to answer for their actions. am not saying the labor party should not have won the election but a land slide victory, mistake!

In all good conscience, what do you believe would be the end result of you sending letters to donor countries and agencies cautioning about dispensation of donor money in Dominica?

Savarin was wrong, very wrong to ask Dominicans to boycott your business, seeing that he is a minister of government, and your business is place of employment and revenue. That was very reckless and concieted of Savarin, but in all truth who expects any less from mister.

But are you not asking Dominicans to do to Savarin the very same thing that he was asking Dominicans to do to you?

Which one of you two guys took the higher road here? I support none of you guys in that whole fiasco. This is grown men acting like children and is Dominica’s name and reputation hanging in the balance here…

Well we might face more conflict this weekened as Dominicans are not willing to let go of this stupidness. Counts show that those who took part in this pettition have supported O D Brisbane. If Dominicans themselves will not stop it, why should Mr. Brisbane? After all, they are giving him grounds! Now that they have given him the power to cause more conflict in their lives, I am looking to find out who are they going to blame this time. I am just sorry that all my loved ones live in Dominica.

But I am hoping that Dominicans abroad are not responsible in supporting this ongoing conflict more than Dominicans at home. For if they are, I am saying with boldness to them, that they have no heart of compassion for the people of their homeland! Dominicans at home, if you are more responsibility for this, you ought to know what you going through there. You ought to know that no one can ease your pain, if you will not help yourself. That is what my doctor always tells me.

  34. warma
    December 8, 2010

I place the blame on both sides and I will attempt to maintain an independent position in the process; here goes –

    (1) To Jerry. I believe his issues with the government were best left within the confines of Dominica. I totally disagree with him taking the issue up with foreign entities because that can easily be construed as inviting foreigners into the internal affairs of Dominica, and that’s a no-no.; as a matter of fact, that is borderline treasonous. He, as well as others, contend that he did not say that any of those entities should stop with their assistance, but it is disingenuous to think that a letter worded as such, would not cause the reader to pause, if not outright stop, whatever assistance their giving. I will maintain that a Dominican attempting taking food out of the mouths of Dominicans is treasonous, no matter who does it.

    (2) To Savarin. His pronouncement that Dominicans should boycott the legitimate business and employer demonstrates once again that this man does not, and has never held the interests of Dominicans at heart; he didn’t have it when he was head of the CSA and proceeded to shut down the country 3 decades ago, he doesn’t have it now. This man should not be left anywhere anything that is of interest to Dominicans – PERIOD! He should go – matter of fact, the Prime Minister should dismiss him. A government minister advocating for the collapse of a legitimate employer of Dominicans, some of which may have even voted for the party Mr. Savarin represents, is an astonishing display of a lack of political judgment. It is also treasonous because he too is attempting to take food from the mouths of Dominicans.

    I will close with this famous quote;

“First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out – because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me – and by then there was no one left to speak out for me.”

This quote is attributed to Pastor Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran church leader in Germany in the 1920’s and 30’s. His biography is extensive, but let me give a brief snapshot.

After the defeat of Germany at the end of World War 1, Niemoller preached for the rise of Germany again, for a great strong leader to rise up and bring the country back to prominence. He advocated German nationalism; it was a philosophy identical to one, Adolph Hitler. When the Nazi’s came to power, he cheered them on. Throughout the 20’s, when the Nazi’s began to purge their society of those who disagreed with them as well as those that were not of pure Aryan bloodlines, he turned a blind eye to atrocities in his midst. He eventually, albeit late, began to have a change of heart, and upon meeting Hitler in the early 1934 to discuss, among other things, the demand that all churches swear allegiance to Hitler, he refused, and henceforth, through his sermons, began to be critical of the things he had turned a blind eye to all along. He was arrested by the Gestapo numerous times between 1934 and 1937 and placed in prison. In 1938 he was again detained but this time he was sent to a concentration camp where he and spent 7 years. After WW2, he gave many lectures and its during that post-war period he made that famous statement. His point was that, through silence, Germans as a whole were complicit in the Nazi imprisonment and murder of millions of people.

The lesson in this for Dominicans is this; if you see injustice, if you see corruption, if you see any political figure act in a manner that is contrary to our ideals and the interests of our country, speak out; say something. Let Dominicans know what is going on. Do it, but be faithful to each other in the process.

    • Lizavier4Jesus
      December 9, 2010

      To Warma

This lesson still does not tell us what we must do, as far as the conflict between Mr. Brisbane and Mr. Savarin is concerned. For the two men, and mostly because of the political affilliation in this conflict, continue to use us as the rope of a stupid tug-of-war, as they fight against each other. We are being pulled back and forth from both sides as the demand: “come on my side and do this, or come on my side and do that!” Those two guys are boldly dictating to us, a dictation that will fulfill nothing but their own satisfaction.

Those particular men and women do not think that Dominicans have a personal mind and intelligence of their own. Perhaps it is because we look up to them as Lords, Masters, and Madams too much. An 18-3 vote at election time, seems more like a vote for favouring men and women rather than choosing them because of their ability to function with wisdom and authority.

Mr. Brisbane quietly wrote letters to financial institutions, who aid the financial needs of Dominica through its government. His reasons were based mostly on personal conclusions; he showed no proof for his conclusions; neither did he assure the needy of Dominica, whom he mentioned in those letter, that their needs would be met through some of his personal efforts. But he remained quiet about those letters, until his secret was exposed.

Dominicans expressed their displeasure against what Mr. Brisbane did, but Mr Savarin took it up as a reason to pull them on his side. Not realizing that he would have made a grand mistake.

Dominicans expressed their displeasure against Mr. Savarin advice or suggestion to them, to boycout Mr Brisbane’s business; and Mr Brisbane took it up as a reason to gain their support by asking them to vote through his petition letter, calling for Mr. Savarin’s resignation as a Minister of Government. Neither Mr. Brisbane nor Mr. Savarin seem not to care less if Dominicans are displayed with their words and actions. Who are they? They must be saying, that I should apologize to them. But why would they anyway, especially that quite a few are still pampering Mr. Brisbane, including our great Father Jolly.

I perceive that both men are incompetent, childish, and ignorant in attitude and conduct. They both want nothing more than political power and fame. In other words they both want the spotlight. And those of us who believe that the words and actions of those two men are anything more than the desire to satisfy their ego, well I say, “that is just too bad”.

As far as this foolish tug-of-war is concerned, I pray that God’s time will come for Him to put an end to it, for the peace, comfort, and unity of fellow Dominicans.

Liz, I totally agree with you. Dominicans are being used as pawns in a testosterone-fueled grudge match between 2 opposite “powers”. The sad thing is that they know that too, and they’re allowing it to happen, all in the name of party loyalty – never mind what is being highlighted may be something to seriously examine, they don’t care. They willingly throw caution to the wind and then they come back to say people holding them down.

I personally believe that a significant amount of the “people in power”, be it politics, business or otherwise, are in it for their own self aggrandizement; the welfare of the common man is almost always secondary to theirs. That is painfully apparent in our current slate of politicians whose fiduciary responsibility is to look out and manage the affairs of Dominicans. But we as a people have some measure of blame for this too, as you stated regarding the 18-3 plebiscite. This “poto-” this or that party mentality needs to stop in order for the country to move forward. Dominicans need to examine the qualifications of those that are put forward to represent them. But they don’t do that – elections tend to represent a popularity contest based on who giving more free stuff, who i can get a drink from, etc etc. That is ridiculous. Until such time when we demand credibility in our leaders this situation will continue unabated. Our politics is too parochial; something needs to change, drastically, and soon.

Mr. Brisbane, you can submit all petition you want, the DLP has already stated that they are in support of Mr. Savarin’s statement. You were the one who started this in the first place by trying to sabotage the assistance given to Dominica by writing those letters. Though, I may not be in supposrt of Mr. Savarin’s statement, he has his reason for making such a statement. And it is clear that majority of us Dominicans are satisfied with the DLP’s work thus far. So for peace in this country, I ask you and your goons to please let this rest because if this continues, your business and the opposition party will suffer while the DLP government gain support.

DLP????? Is it still a politicalparty with officers and such? I beg to defer-it is just an election apparatus.. It is not a party——not any more…………that’s for sure.

Well I was waiting to hear a supporter of the DLP say they are satisified with their work and that’s the problem on the ISLAND,by the way you can only speak for yourself because a larger section of our people disapprove with the status quo and that’s why they are calling for we changes..
Everything cannot be about political parties or who we like and dont like those are not part of the qualification of being a good leader it takes much more than that.

I will not condemn any one

please dont beg for my vote on this.

There are crucial issues in dominica which needs addressing.

Housing, land issues and thier ridiculous high prices ( stony, dry land with no attraction)

mentaly ill persons walking the streets and threatening individuals

    uneducated children

    prisons and its fascilities

entertainment for tourists and young persons

and the list goes on and on

So please dont go begging people to sign any bloody petition,

you make your bed lie in it

I never ask you to speak on my behalf

so idiotic…who do u want to speak for u if you don’t do it for yourself, if we have no oppositionto do so on your behalf (cus what we have isn’t), if when you do u do so under ur breath, when the poor is afraid to, and the majority of the rich can take a flight to some other country when things go bad here or hide behind their money?

      YOU GO BRISBANE

Zuma dear, just don’t sign the darn petition but do no tell Mr. Briasane what he sould do or should not do, speak for yourself, many of us applaud Mr. Brisbane’s vilaint efforts on our behalves and we will sign the petition enmasse!!!!! Why don’t you address the issues if you think you can.. All you encouraging the people that we elected to run the country and address the issues you speak about to steal, rape and pillage the country and all you want other people who are not responisble or being paid to do it to do it.. One thing I hope you are not incharge of is the education of the children.. Again I say thank you very much Mr. Brisbane, people like you give Dominica a little hope, it shows that mot all Dominicans are ignorant and clueless.. We have some thinkers there to! Let’s tecah the children how to think and to engage in critical analysis of issues, tecah them self sufficiency, not mendecany, thesch them about morality, ethics and values, not deception, lies, fraud and corruption, teach them that lying and cheating and stealing is wrong..

Guard. if you telling Zuma to speak for himself then why would you support Jerry speaking for 70000 Dominicans without their consent. Why?
