The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has committed $1-million for the development of a three-star hotel in the Kalinago Territory, the party’s candidate for the Salybia Constituency has said.
Speaking at a rally at Jolly John Park on Sunday, Casius Darroux, said the hotel will be built in Aywasi, a section of the Kalinago Territory.
“We are very happy that the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), under the leadership of Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit, is committed to the development of a three-star hotel in Aywasi and has committed $1-millon to this project,” he said. “I will be asking parliament to do more for Aywasi so we can have an even better hotel in the Kalinago Terrtory.”
According to Darroux the project will create jobs for the people of the area.
“This will create jobs for our people and more money in the hands of construction workers, farmers, craft artisans, vendors and it will also be a sound and job creation agenda for entire country,” he stated.
He said he is committed to establishing a “small business development fund” which he described as an “absolute necessity for the Salybia constituency.” He noted that through the fund, business owners will have access to credit which he pointed out “is of vital importance to the development of small businesses for the constituency.”
Darroux stated that the DLP will establish an “effective agricultural station” in the constituency.
“As a matter of fact the government through the NEP (National Employment Program) program has already began this initiative” he stated. “This will help our farmers tremendously as we move move to implement a strategic approach to agriculture in this constituency. This strategy will move our farmers into production of long term crops such as coffee, cocoa and citrus, as well as high value crops such as vanilla, black pepper and cloves.”
He further stated that there are plans to make the Kalinago Terrtory a tax and duty free zone.
“This is not a novel idea, it is an economic development strategy that has been tried and tested in the United States and Canada where there are many indigenous peoples and communities,” Darroux said. “I am totally committed to this initiative because I believe that it holds the best hope for the economic upliftment of my people and extension it holds great promises for economic diversification and stimulation of the entire Dominican economy.”

Why are they trying to fool people by promising to build hotels, don’t people know in Dominica, that hotels are private entities and not owned by governments, are these Labor party ministers just plain out wicked, or just taking us Dominicans for Jackasses as they have been doing for the past 15years.
Every where you go in the world hotels are privately owned or owned by hotel chains example, Hilton or Sandals, these are the chains that build and manage hotels and other private hoteliers, where in this world do you ever here Governments building hotels. these ministers and Skerrit will tired try to fool Dominicans.
And what determines how many stars a hotel is rated at are the guests, based on their treatment received and what they look at as being 3, 4 or 5 star treatment, what is this Krap about 3 star hotel for one million dollars. can one million dollars build a hotel? one million cannot even build three wooden cottages and properly land scape an area, is a hotel it can build, why they do take the three million and build another villa at Savanpille for skerrit to rent for professors, that would bring him up to 13 three store villas.

Now at that same meeting Mr. Skerrit also said a lot of things highlighted by the FALSE statement that from “HENCEFORTH every single child in the Kalinago Territory who get accepted to the Dominica State College, shall have a full scholarship from the government of Dominica“I say to the college students, payment of your college tuition because I have not told Cassius that, but I am saying here tonight…”

Mr. Darroux said many things at that meeting and he even went on to say that he has received approval from government to declare September 19th as the official Kalinago Day in memory of fallen Kalinago heroes. The question remains:
1. How can an aspiring MP (meaning he is currently a none elected member to Parliament) receive such approval to enact something which MUST be done by law!!!
2. Was the current Kalinago Chief Mr. Williams consulted and are there minutes from such meeting.
3. Did Mr. Graneau not mention that it would be too much work to change xyz!!!! and it would be easier to do abc!!!
4. Is the proposed hotel going to have KALINAGO architecture heavily reflected in its design or are we just going to built a concrete block??

Honestly i can’t understand a party that is boasting of its achievements sharing so much money and building materials now in the territory. On a weekend especially its loads upon loads of blocks, cement, ply, 2*4 etc. Plus the cheques. No other constituency is getting that much according to sources. The leader has just pronounced that you vote for me, i give you this. Something like when Christ was tempted in the desert. The leader has admitted that gov’ts have neglected the reserve. Who has been in power over the last 15 years? Pappy? Kelly has failed, Ashton has failed, what more do we expect from Cassius? History is teaching the Kalinagoes a lesson. In 1999 it was plywood, in 2004 it was the same, in 2009 it was the same in 2014 its even worst. An earthquake of building materials. How many of these people are going to afford to build their homes? In 2099 its going to be the same plywood and galvanize.
Something is better than nothing, which is what they’ve had for a long time. They are descendants of warriors, they defended the Island for close to 200 years. Their territory is huuuuuuge in Dominica terms, there is no other region in Dominica can you drive for miles and still be in the same village. So supporting such a vast constituency takes bravery because those promises are great and hard to keep.

However, the problem is not with you but with the Skerrit led DLP Administration. My brother, Cassius, the Skerrit administration is a “one man show”. And no matter how sincere you are about representing the true indigenous people of Dominica, you still have to go through Mr. Skerrit who has ALWAYS treated the Kalinago Territory as an after-thought once he is in Office. It is very hard for a tiger to change his stripes, thus you cannot expect Mr. Skerrit to do differently this time around if by chance his huge “concerts” propel him back to his dictatorial position.

On Feb 6, 2014 why didn’t he outline that in his vision when he outlined plans if reelected? I am baffled to hear Ashton Glorifying Skerrit so much as if Skerrit is the Jesus for the Kalinago people. Does Ashton have any shame? His own vehicle (Ashton) was damaged in an accident soon after the election of 2009 and Skerrit REFUSED to provide the Pipirit with a government vehicle. He had to be walking to VIP functions in the Territory or hitch hiking to meet VIPs.
Last week after labour delivered building materials to people in Bataca late at night, Ashton had to be on the road after 11 pm waiting for ride to take him to his Castle in Sinecou. And Ashton you have guts talking?
No wonder Skerrit will continue to wash his foot in all you face!!!

Big river if you knew about diplomacy you would not have made such a statement. On a governmental level gov’ts are able to negotiate money most through loans (and also dishonest means). Alba is the brain child of Chavez and Castro. If UWP or even pappy were in government were in power at that time they would have benefited. China also had their intentions as to why they invested billions in Africa and the Caribbean (Dominica is not the sole beneficiary as PM makes it seem). Read some international news or do some travelling. All heads of state have direct contact with each other (except maybe if they are real enemies). PM makes it seem as it is he alone that has the powers of negotiation. Any government and leader would have benefited. On final point, ask yourself where is the money coming from and what are is the payback of such money. Nothing is for free
I understand your comment. The sad thing is that in the reserve there is so much unemployment and people are most likely to be employed by government. Everyone is dependent on the system. Where the money is everyone is rushing like its the gold rush in the wild wild west. Most of recently graduates from college and universities are all employed under NEP. They can’t say a word for fear of biting the hand that feeds them. The were promised further employment as Maduro promised 8 million dollars more. I wonder how much longer Venezuela is going to gift their hard earned money. Their economy was budgeted at the price of $110 dollars a barrel, the price currently stands at $80. This means that they have to prop up their economy to maintain its value. When Dominica Grow from being a baby to toddler, to teen to grown up?
