Castle Bruce gets its share in war on pit latrines

Drigo said funds are being made available for bathroom facilities in Castle Bruce

The people of Castle Bruce will soon see an eradication of pit latrines in their community since the government has made available $200,000 towards that initiative.

This was revealed by Parliamentary Representative of the Castle Bruce constituency, Johnson Drigo, during his address at the 17th inaugural meeting of the Castle Bruce Village Council on Wednesday.

According to Drigo, Dipax, a section of Castle Bruce, will benefit from the project.

“As we speak the Prime Minister has committed $200,000 for Castle Bruce and Dipax for the continuation of bathroom facilities and these funds will go to the Castle Bruce Village Council for implementation,” he said. “Castle Bruce got seven toilet facilities, but we ensure that four were done apart from the seven in Dipax because we are not leaving Dipax out. Dipax is an integral part of Castle Bruce. Anything we get for Castle Bruce is for Castle Bruce and Dipax.”

He further mentioned that the government has already spent $450,000 towards renovating the Jalousie road in the community.

“I told you the Jalousie road will be dug but just bear with Parl Rep Johno, let him get some major projects off the way in the San Sauveur area,” he said.

Drigo promised that the last phase of the road will soon be completed.

“There is a last phase, which is from the junction to the main road in Wakama,” he sated. “We will do that but for now, my dear people of Jalousie, strong supporters of Johnson Drigo, you have an excellent road to drive on. Don’t let anyone tell you nothing is being done for you because this is being done for your comfort and safety.”

So much money being spent on infrastructure, and so little to the benefits of our people, I tend to wonder why. ? We do need roads it’s a want.

Thanks P.m. Johnson Drigo, pleaser put a flushing toilet at the Catholic Church too. One is urgently needed. I was at a funeral last month and my God I wanted so much to use the bathroom. When I rushed out, I just had to go right back in Church. Please , please Johnson, put one at the Catholic Church. You will be blessed doing just that. The critics will always criticise, because they do not want people’s standard of living to improve. Can you imagine that. My mom is home bound now. Thank God we have flushing toilet now. Praise God . My mom would not survive having to walk to our old pit toilet in La PLaine. Much too old, much too far. Praise the Lord . Thank you Jesus. Thank you Jesus.

After 15 years in office these guys are boasting about the eradication of pit latrines?
20 years ago Dominica was well on its way with the construction of houses with flush toilets.
I will stop my comments here, this is just ridiculous.

    And so the story goes:
Once upon a time there was a lovely Caribbean Island called Dominica, which was governed by the Dominica Latrine Party with a leader who could only offer the people pampers and wipes, but that was only once!
    CHANGE IS A MUST ABSOLUTELY.

Johnson listen well. You are there to represent the people of Castle Bruce first and not Mr. Skerrit. You lost your way brother, that politics has done your head in. Best you leave it and find some peace.

The government on one side of their mouths saying that dominica economy is doing good and on the other side preaching about the eradication of pit toilets. If the economy was doing good, don’t you think that the people would be able to buy their own toilet?

And we out there showing the world how backward we are……in 2014 we are still talking about pit toilets. Anyway do all you do….change is a must…after 15yrs now allu want to go around trying things…..too late Labor ….Change is a must.

To be in a pit latrine is nothing easy. What is wrong will you all people. The scent alone is deadly anyone who talks against it wicked. The ones who talked against have their flushing toilet. the pit latrines days are gone we are in the twentieth
    century.

Anonymous, I don’t think anyone said anything against a flush toilet. You are right, a pit toilet stinks and is not a nice place to be. It is a question of priorities. Make sure people can earn a decent living so they can afford to build their own flush toilet, septic tank, pay the water bill and afford toilet paper.

All well and good to improve sanitation facilities and in so doing, achieving the MDG, Goal 7 in Ensuring Environmental Sustainability. However if we truly understand the goal’s principle then we see that this so called war on pit latrine is yet other means of breeding on the ignorance of the populace and a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    http://mdgs.un.org/unsd/mdg/Metadata.aspx?IndicatorId=31

According to the UN’s definition “The proportion of the population using an improved sanitation facility, total, urban, rural, is the percentage of the population with access to facilities that hygienically separate human excreta from human contact. Improved facilities include flush/pour flush toilets or latrines connected to a sewer, -septic tank, or -pit, ventilated improved pit latrines, pit latrines with a slab or platform of any material which covers the pit entirely, except for the drop hole and composting toilets/latrines. Unimproved facilities include public or shared facilities of an otherwise acceptable type, flush/pour-flush toilets or latrines which discharge directly into an open sewer or ditch, pit latrines without a slab, bucket latrines, hanging toilets or latrines which directly discharge in water bodies or in the open and the practice of open defecation in the bush, field or bodies or water. Definitions and a detailed description of these facilities can be found at the website of the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation at http://www.wssinfo.org.”

But if the poor people don’t have money to feed themselves and pay their current bills ….this initiative from the GOVT is putting them in more debt.

They now have to find money to pay water bill.

Create an environment for the folks to own sustainable jobs then they will make their choices whether they want water toilet, an extra room or an inside kitchen.

The war on Pit Toilets is just a vote catching plough by the Skeritt led administration. The public servants cannot get a salary increase and all that money are being spent on, pit toilets, river walls etc. For years we have been hearing about the beautification of the river banks, money is being spent at the eve of the elections, when the old bridge is falling apart. It will be very interesting to see what happens after the general elections, God forbids they win. I can remember years ago, the UWP was accused of breaking grounds like rain just before the elections, now, breaking grounds have become so popular with this Government, one wonders whether there will be sufficient grounds available before elections are called.

Drigo (JOHNNO), Castle Bruce used to be a very thriving agricultural village, with supporting business in culture, art, tourism, the beach and river, the many feast days, now one can walk through Castle Bruce and expect to see Django and Clint Eastwood riding into the dessert looking poverty poor stricken village created under your leadership and ably supported by your so called great leader Skerrit.
The only visible sign of any semblance to view in Castle Bruce is the cemetery as you enter the village. Before the cemetery the fishing port and beach where many people including visitors congregated are all dead and in a mess.
I wonder if previous rejected, deposed Parliamentary Representative Loreen Bannis is in the village to see the demise she left behind when she was kicked out, deposed by you`ll and the DLP lead on the advice by Skerrit.
One more dead project in the village which was claimed to be promising is the Reunion Centre down by the playing field on way to Tranto, a neglected community of Castle Bruce, deprived of meaningful intervention programmes. NO attempt was made to resuscitate the Reunion Centre that the many young unemployed people could use, but Skerrit have you all clapping hands receiving toilets, in this day and age. (Please wash all you hands). IS THAT HOW CASTLE BRUCE COME. WHEY PAPA WHAT HAPPEN TO US.
You all continue to spew developmental nonsense to the people in the name of promises and hopes BY SKERRIT`S ACOLYTES WHO KNOW BETTER but are lost for ideas, as Castle Bruce crave for meaningful leadership and discipline and not boom flies of Skerrit’s. We know who they are , we see them running about the village every day. They are now back hugging Drigo, whom they abandoned last election because election is now close.
The village council is obsolete with Skerrit’s principle boy(s) and last years campaign fellow, now well positioned as an elected member on the council.
The village is dead and now rather than offer opportunities for jobs you proudly and deceitfully offer toilets (My God!!!!) , what a waste, in the true literal sense of the word.
From where I sit and from my last visit I find it painful and difficult to say I an eager to visit Castle Bruce in the near future.
This government under Skerrit has killed our villages. He, Skerrit and his ministers are clueless to development and what to do to regain pride in our people. I noticed no mention was made of the failed irrigation project, then talked about the so called big product. WHERE IS IT NOW,,,,IS AGRICUlTURE BOOMING OR THE PEOPLE CASTLE BRUCE ARE DEAD EMOTIONALLY.
There is nothing new that either Gloria or Skerrit CAN DO FOR US CASTLE BRUCE OR says is going to make a difference, they have been spewing the same nonsense for 12 years and it is TIME FOR CHANGE , IT IS A MUST.

I don’t think you understand Anonymous. I now from experience that when you have a pit toilet, a latwine, your first priority is not a flush toilet and toilet paper is a luxury. Your priority is to have an income, have a job so you can build your own home and a flush toilet and maintain your next level of living with your own money from a steady income. Without that, a flush toilet is little more than cosmetic window dressing.
