DLP accuses Linton of plagiarism; Chastanet disagrees

The Dominica Labour Party has accused leader of the United Workers Party of plagiarizing the speech of his colleague, Allen Chastanet of the St. Lucia United Workers Party.

But Chastanet has disagreed.

The matter was made public on the Next Level Program on privately-owned Kairi FM on the weekend.

During the program, senior counsel, Tony Astaphan accused Linton of “speech stealing.”

“Someone who is bankrupt of ideas has no place in the race to lead the country, our nation forward,” he said. “What we have said in the past that the prime minister has access to a number of persons who write speeches for him. But the content of the speeches come from him and are approved by him and they represent his philosophy, his direction and he does not go to a text book or the speech of another political leader to steal an idea and to claim that it is his. He has never done that. But this is what we have. We don’t have speech writing for Linton, we have speech stealing by Linton.”

A number of documents have been cited which allegedly pointed to Linton using quotes from a speech delivered by Chastanet. The documents include Linton’s inaugural speech in Castle Bruce on September 1 2013, Chastanet’s inaugural speech as leader of the UWP in St. Lucia on August 7, 2013 and a reflection by Linton which was published on Dominica News Online.

But Chastanet told DNO on Tuesday morning that he doesn’t consider the matter plagiarism because both he and Linton share similar ideas, philosophies and visions for their respective countries.

“I’ve known Linton for some time now and we just happened to be political leaders of sister parties,” he stated. “We have shared ideas and have assisted each other … so it won’t be untoward to believe that some of the concepts that we have in our documents are very similar.”

He said both he and Linton have discussed the things they want for their countries on many occasions

“Lennox and I have had many discussions about the visions of where we want to to take our countries,” Chastanet said. “We find ourselves sharing similar positions and we share the same values…”

Based on their shared value, he said he has no problem with Linton using some of his ideas, and the same the other way around.

“I don’t have any issues with it,” he stated.

As a matter of fact, Chastanet said he is proud of Linton using some of his words.

“It did not happen by accident,” he stated. “I am very proud of what words he used over there and equally proud of what works he has been able to achieve.”

See three separate documents below with the alleged plagiarism highlighted by those making the accusations.

It does not matter how much we try to defend Lennox, this is serious and everytime he opens his mouth we will forever be wondering where his words come from. This will follow him for the rest of his life….ouch! So now that Lennox has lost his last “talent” what now?

PLAGIARISM is a very serious crime we should not take it as a joke. WUP or DLP we should not condone it. What Linton did was disgraceful if you want to lead a country start clean. God knows the truth don’t throw stones when you live in glass houses.

    WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Many people think of plagiarism as copying another’s work or borrowing someone else’s original ideas. But terms like “copying” and “borrowing” can disguise the seriousness of the offense:

ACCORDING TO THE MERRIAM-WEBSTER ONLINE DICTIONARY, TO “PLAGIARIZE” MEANS

to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own
to use (another’s production) without crediting the source
    to commit literary theft
to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
In other words, plagiarism is an act of fraud. It involves both stealing someone else’s work and lying about it afterward.

BUT CAN WORDS AND IDEAS REALLY BE STOLEN?

According to U.S. law, the answer is yes. The expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property and is protected by copyright laws, just like original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in some way (such as a book or a computer file).

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ARE CONSIDERED PLAGIARISM:

turning in someone else’s work as your own
copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on “fair use” rules)
Most cases of plagiarism can be avoided, however, by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed and providing your audience with the information necessary to find that source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism. See our section on citation for more information on how to cite sources properly.

Seem starnge that Lennox known as a Caribbean journalist with words as his special forte would now have to be accused of plagiarism in his area of stength!
He is a speech writer and cetainly more formidable in delivery than Chastanet !
Very sad that a lazy and careless moment could have caused this ,as the words of which he is accused are simplistic..and not particularly inspiring or earth shaking ..any poliitician of basic intelligence would utter them …
The echelons and aspirants to high power demands more acute principled considerations of being above the fray in such basic moral litmus tests …
Certainly no one can cite LINTON for lack of communication and verbal skills …indeed one expects Chastanet to be the one who boorows from Skerritt in speech writing due to his training and reputation and delivery .
Sad that he let down his guard !!!
He may wish also to remove the weakness of being over egoistic, haughty, distant and patronising -this worked for Eugenia Charles but certainly will not work for grass root leaders

Primary School Students, High School Students, and College and University Students I guess you know you would not graduate if you would follow the lead of the UWP leader. That type of change saying that passing someone else hard work as yours rest comfortable with some.

I hope Parents who support the UWP are not telling their children indirectly that they can see nothing wrong with what the leader of the UWP has done. I hope parents are not encouraging their children that it is okay to hand it the same paper as their friend.

I would expect the principal or the Dean would call both students in and possible fail them both for handing in similar work. I would hope the student who worked hard would not fail because someone else copied his or her work and the professors could not tell them apart.

Parry, I would ask the Prime Minister why is it, he and his Party supporters are having nightmares over Mr. Lennox Linton. In August 2013, he said about Mr. Linton,” the pitch forking of Linton to the helm of the UWP at this time is an insult to other competent qualified and hard working well enabling members of the UWP.” Just recently Mr. Tony Astaphan had this to say,” Linton is undeniably a novice and that he is unfit to be elected to public office and particular the office of Prime Minister.” Parry should ask the Prime Minister if they really believe all what they have said about Mr. Linton, why the great interest in whatever he does or says. Why not treat him as a nonentity.

The humbleness of Mr. Linton is fascinating, this is a God given leader. Mr. Linton is trying to protect Mr. Chastanet and don’t mind facing the consequence to protect the brother. According to a reliable source, Mr. Linton was allegedly paid by the UWP of St. Lucia to organize their political champagne and to write the acceptance speech for Mr. Chastanet who was voted the opposition leader of the party. All Mr. Linton is doing is to use some of the lines he originally wrote and use it in his own speech. I wish Mr. Linton would reveal the truth for his own sake.

Alan Chastenet cannot make right what is clearly wrong in the “civilized world”. Mr. Linton could have saved himself and his party the embarrassment of what is happening. All he had to do was to cite the quotation and give credit to the originator of the ideas. But, oh no. True to form. Mr. Linton does cannot bring himself to accepting that that one does not have to reinvent the wheel as long as the inventor of the wheel is accorded his/her credit – you can go right ahead and use the wheel. So those people who believe that Mr. Linton was right, they are free to so believe. It does not however make what he did right, even if Chastenet bring his entire executive to defend the indefensible. Again we live in a “civilized world”. By the way did Lennox get Adolf Hitler’s permission to use a phrase form Hitler. You mean of all the world leaders who stood head and shoulders high above Hitler, Lennox could not find a quotable quote? It says a lot about Lennox. Did he also consult the family of JFK when he used the phrase from JFK’s inaugural speech without giving the man due credits?

    • labor power

Your an idiot if you didn’t think Hitler was not good leader, Germany under Hitler’s reign was at it’s peak in terms of innovation and all the Germans that were born their were happy, that’s why they rallied with him and condoned the things he did. Sure you don’t share Hitler ideals, but you can’t say he was a bad leader. A leader is someone who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. He did that better than almost anyone, to the point where he was almost able to take over the world and take on world super powers.Let me just make some things clear first thought, because dominicans like to take people’s words out of context and put a spin on them. Do I condone what he did? No, was he a bad leader? No. Back on topic… Right now Dominica economy is going down the toilet and you’re arguing about a plagiarized speech? We got more important things to talk about bub! Go on wikipedia and look at largest economies in the world, Dominica is almost at the bottom of the list, only countries below us are unable to do better because of their geographical location!

“Using another person’s ideas, words, expressions, or findings in your writing without acknowledging the source is to plagiarize. A writer who does not provide appropriate credit when quoting or paraphrasing another’s writing is guilty of plagiarism and in violation of the policy.”

In spite of all the continued lies and deception that he’s so infamous for, even his base, the very poor and illiterate are beginning to see who he is, a true enemy of the Dominican people. I am not a political person neither am I affiliated with any party. With that being said, I am only going to address the issue of plagiarism. I have looked at the documents and clearly Mr. Linton has plagiarized. Wrong is wrong and it is wrong. Plagiarism is a serious offense and is taken seriously here in the US. It should not be tolerated under any circumstance and it is about time educators in Dominica stress on this. In my PhD program we were required to take an ethics course which spent a lot of time on plagiarism. This is something I take seriously and expect Dominicans too as well. The mere fact that Mr. Linton copied and pasted not just sentences but paragraphs in some instances WITHOUT giving credit to Mr. Chastanet IS plagiarism. Regardless of whether or not they shared ideologies, his speech should have acknowledged Mr. Chastanet. Without giving credit it passes off as his own which is not the case. So to my fellow Dominicans, please put aside party politics and acknowledge that what Mr. Linton did was wrong. Teach our youth that plagiarism is wrong.

How can you accuse Linton without having answers to these questions? It’s obvious you have a bias against Linton as you did not claim to know the facts in your statement; and most of us don’t have the answers to above. You can’t win UWP here so to discredit Linton you making his colleague look better…… you given Alan a lot of credit…either way UWP will get credit.
This exercise has shown de Dominican public that Team Dominica UWP is well connected with its colleagues….. respect for leadership goes across the board….Alan and UWP St. Lucia is current in its affairs….well aware of the nastiness in DLP governance in DA….Skerrit and Tony are not friends of Alan neither Lennox……. I am clear on that. Lennox strengthening his position and party

Wake up Tony that strategy not working.
Tell us about the cargo boat that was promised at st. Joe…de new hospital… international airport

Why does the DLP lie to us when they can’t deliver.?

Get off Lennox back, you not going to vote for him….tell me something convincing that I would even THINK of voting for Julius Timothy.

    Boy DNO not easy.
Chastanet spoke on Q95 on Tuesday morning on the matter of Lennox Linton stealing his speech and making it his(Lennox)own.
One is left to wonder why Chastanet is yet to answer the question of Plagiarism correctly instead of beating around the bush with fancy stories of when he met Lennox and how they became friends.
    DNO,Chastanet rubbishes allegations is BS.

  39. 897
    September 9, 2014

Is Astaphan suggesting that Chastanet possess the sole and entire rights to any and all of the material allegedly plagiarized by Linton?

The subject matter itself are of speeches delivered by Linton which may have contained words of a general nature. Astaphan cannot determine whether the references, names, words, sentences and or phrases from Chastanet’s speech was original or whether there was any degree of skill judgment or labour for the speech to attract copyright.

These men share similar positions and values and as Chastanet said “I am very proud of what words he used over there…”

This just another hogwash and political attach on the character of Linton and once again, a disgrace to Astaphan and DLP.

He didn’t take just ideas or plans.. who took EXACT words! no matter what he is a plagiarizer… no matter if he took one sentence or the whole speech as his own.

….and I wonder if you never plagiarizer. everybody that went to school has plagiarizer so don’t play a saint .
taking ideas, exact words ..it’s all plagiarism

      • huh.
        September 9, 2014

That is Skerrits opinion. Was it ethically wrong of him to say? Is he not allowed to express his opinion? If anything, it was not very sensitive of him to say something like that. It must have hurt your feelings. (Honestly, I’m sure Skerrit has done something worse than call you dishonest… not the best rebuttal to the accusations against Linton)

What Linton has done is just wrong. I don’t care how much you love Linton, he is just really wrong on this one… you can’t deny it.

I have never plagiarized. Why? Because I knew if I got caught I would get an F on my paper and possibly be expelled. Also, if you knowingly plagiarize you will always be worried you will be found out. Not worth it. Not only this, but in school they taught me how to cite my sources. I had my own mind to come up with my own ideas, and was not so lazy to steal someone else…. I had no need to plagiarize.

I don’t know why the whole “the one without sin cast the first stone” mentality is so popular in Dominica. That really has nothing to do with nothing when it comes down to if something is right or wrong. It’s just an excuse so that whatever side you are on on a matter it’s somehow justified.

Check your ethical and moral compass. Right is right, wrong is wrong! Doesn’t matter who does it. I could care less if it was Skerrit who did it or Linton. I would still hold the same view. I would just rather some people commenting on here would open their eyes to the truth.

The pass President of the United States, Mr. Kennedy, was famous for the following,” ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” This is Skeritt’s version, ” ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for Dominica.” We heard last week, an allegation, that many speeches are written for Skeritt by one of his advisors, Harley Henry of Barbados, neither Skeritt or Hartley has denied those allegations. In my opinion that should of greater concern to Skeritt.

  50. Truth
    September 9, 2014

Facts are facts, unless Mr. Chastanet, and Mr. Linton are saying that both speeches were fabricated and they both deny ownership the facts speak for themselves. The fact that neither Chastanet and Linton are denying the contents of their documents speaks to the truth of the allegation of plagiarism. What of the words of the other persons including poets, song writers and politicians that Lennox has used without acknowledgement,(falsely leading people to believe that he was the writer), are we going to hear lame excuses from them on behalf of Lennox. I think not as some like Hitler and JFK are long gone and the only person that might be heard on this matter could be Mr. Mark Marie.

For Lennox and the UWP no matter what spin they put on this issue it is very very EMBARASSING. As the saying goes you point one finger at me and you have three pointing back at you. This issue begs the question, What other utterances of Lennox were stolen from other writers :?: :?: :?: SHAMELESS

First of all, I DO NOT belong to a political party! Mr Linton’s speech would not be able to survive a Turnitin or Grammarly plagiarism checker. Mr Chastanet approval after the fact does not excuse Mr. Linton from the CRIME of plagiarism. Further more, Mr. Linton used Mr. Chastanet information without giving him credit. This is SERIOUS business, plagiarism is a crime. I really hope Mr. Linton will reconsider his method of writing speeches before he gets into SERIOUS trouble. Crimes like that are aired on CNN news (and such like).

    September 9, 2014

Funny DNO never ran this story until they could say the claims have been ‘rubbished’ Also interesting that Chastanet never denied that Lennox used his words without consulting him. He tries to downplay it saying ” it won’t be untoward to believe that some of the concepts that we have in our documents are very similar.”

But it’s not similar concepts is the issue as much as copying and pasting entire paragraphs and at the time of delivering the speech these paragraphs were presented as Lennox’s words not words of a comrade that he shares similar beliefs with….Lennox could have simple said something like I want to share words of my Comrade Chastanet that also ring true here

In the end this so-called ‘rubbishing’ is nothing short of one buddy covering for the other…

Even if u use your own words from a previous book you still to make reference. Where is Mr. Mc Marie on that issue?

    • September 9, 2014

Although it was very kind of Mr Chastenet to oblige Mr Linton, that was the extent of his humility, knowing that ” immitation is the sincerest form of flattery”,

This story make no sense cause the harm was done when Linton did not give credit to any of the people he lifted their quotes, even if my brother and myself share the same ideology and we write a report on our ideology is no way it would come out word for word. To me that’s a mere disrespect to the intelligence of the Dominican people. So you all can try to bend the mind of you all people but it wont work on other right thinking Dominican nationals.
