Darroux promises to advance information technology in Dominica

Parliamentary Secretary and Representative for the St. Joseph constituency, Kelver Darroux

Dominica’s youngest member of parliament, Kelver Darroux, is hoping to present innovative ideas to develop the area of information technology in Dominica.

Darroux, who won the St. Joseph seat for the Dominica Labour Party in the December 18 general elections, was sworn in yesterday as Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s office with responsibilities for information technology.

“Dominicans can look forward to me making an impact in information technology. As we are aware, information technology is the way forward right now and being responsible for that area, I will bring the sector forward,” he said.

According to the parliamentary secretary, one of his areas of focus will be a  new call center expected to create hundreds of new jobs for Dominica’s youth.

“You can look forward to see expansion of the call centers in Dominica as well as the possibility of having a new call center established here. This will provide jobs for the young people. You can also see the government sector gaining benefits in that area because as you know Information Technology plays an important role in society,” Darroux told reporters.

Darroux said he his hoping to learn a lot from Prime Minister Skerrit, whom he has described as a ‘visionary’ leader.

Meanwhile, the new parliamentary secretary said he is not disappointed that he was not placed in the ministry responsible for youth affairs. In fact, he has indicated that he intends to share his ideas with officials of that ministry.

totally agreed with embarassed!! where is the .. to move IT to the next level?

  10. January 6, 2010

I think putting him in the PM office for IT has to do with dealing with the access issues that has bee complained about – hacking and stealing personal files from office. I think thats what it is really – to veye.

  11. January 6, 2010

These are sound concerns that I share. I think he should be encouraged to at least start an online degree. It would be difficult on him, but in the long and short term he will become more disciplined, develop as a professional as he gains experience and be better able to execute his work as a minister.
I dont think it’s too healthy for people to think that anyone can run the country without being prepared academically and as a professional because desire to help country is one thing and being able to do it properly is another. Also, we want people who are able to represent us in any international forum and not be hindered because of academic and professional shortcomings. He should be encouraged to further his studies.

Uneducated people should not be given the opportunity to run anything. Our leaders need sound educational background and experience. Not necessarily political experience but administrative experience leading a group of people. But the braindrain in the place left it with an abundance of what we have making up the government. Only in very very very poor nations you see this kind of thing. Those who don’t like what I say, guess what you only dislike it cause you know its a fact. And we could get real real technical here for that purpose and list ministers in foreign governments and their credentials… Even the GDP of these countries cause at the end of the day GDP is what countries are measured against.

To Dee: All Darroux has to do if cyber crimes is his and your concern is: pull a page from any modern US law book and stick it in Dominica’s books. Then buy some software for the Ministry, and other government offices. His job is done. Now, what will he do for the next 5 years?

Embarassed is right. This is just a waste. This is all smoke and mirrors for all the “wanna-be” intellectuals that are still in D/ca to think that there is progress being made. This is a joke, and sadly, the people cant see it because the are getting handouts.
And rightly said, “Educated Dominicans (those who sponsored their own education) Are watching vigilantly hence the reason we won’t return!!”

Congrats. Kelver you have shown yourself to be a humble hardworking young. Let the people know that what you are about is effective represnetation for the people of St Joseph and with or without a ministry you are capable of doing just that. The people of St Joseph are proud of you and very supportive of you evidenced by your convincing victory of 350 votes. We anticipate that in the coming years you will learn and work hard, upgrade your skills and qualifications and in 2015 you will be a force to be reckoned with.

What major impact can you make as Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s office in charge of information technology? I dont see you making any advancements in the field of technology anytime soon. Even if you do the Prime Minister will get all the praises for it because it is his ministry. You will be placed in the background and forgotten until you are needed to win an election again….

    My views…..

Oh please! Caca boiling for what? Hmmm, student? Poor you, you not even aware that presently there are no laws that define cyber crimes in Dominica. Neither are there allowances for presenting this mordern type of evidence at court. You smarties, go amend the constitution and come again. Simple case in point, if there is no law to break, no crime has been committed! Duh!

    Hey Kelver,
Congrats on your new career. i wish you the best.
There are many of us in the diaspora who have obtained degrees in Information Technology and can contribute to the development of that sector in Dominica. Do you think that your ministry would be willing to utilize some of that talent? I for one would love to come home and work, but I have student loans to pay, so salaries have to be competitive.

What “qualifications” do you really need to be a minister in any particular portfolio?

Plus he is a parliamentary secretary, I guess because of his lack of experience in public service.

If he has good managerial skills Darroux should be able to make use of the bureaucrats and technocrats that have the “qualifications” in the Ministry of Information Technology, which is head by Skerrit, who is the Minister in that portfolio.

Let’s not be to judgmental. Let us wait and see.
