Despite judge’s ruling Green and James remain confident

Green (left) and James exit court this afternoon

Despite suffering a heavy loss in court yesterday political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Ron Green and President of the UWP Edison James both remain confident as the dual citizenship trial involving Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Education Minister Petter St. Jean continued today.

Green and James spoke to members of the media immediately after emerging from court this afternoon. The two have been the only witnesses called to testify so far for the petitioners. Green still believes that the petitioners’ case is strong, despite the judge’s ruling yesterday. The judge had ruled that both Skerrit and St. Jean were not required to give evidence in court.

Green stated, “I think it went well. I gave all the information and all the truth that I am aware of and the case continues. It is early still, we resume on Tuesday so we will know futher. There’s lots more that has to come. I think [the case] would have been better if we had the opportunity to hear from our Prime Minister and from our Minister of Education as to the truth of their ownership of a French passport, but we still have evidence that I think is compelling and the case continues.”

James spoke about his cross-examination in court earlier in the day. He expressed that he may have expected more troubling questions from Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan.

He said, “I feel let down with the cross-examination, I don’t know why they made me waste my time. I came there and it was like he was struggling to find what to ask me. The hype that was around, I just feel let down, but things went well.”

As for the strength of the case James affirmed, “When [our lawyers] formulated that case and put it in, we did not have Skerritt’s passports, but we were satisfied that we had the basis to prove that Mr Skerritt was in breach of Section 32 of the Constitution. Had the judge agreed to our subpoena arrangement, it would have taken us perhaps from a 90 percent expectation of success to a 100 percent. That she hasn’t, we are satisfied to be at the 90 percent of our anticipation of success. So, while it would have been good if the judge had directed that the information be provided, we are very confident that we are on course to prove our case. Of course, in the final analysis, it is left to the judge.”

James continued, “You know what we dealt with yesterday? A situation in which Mr Skerritt, never having said that he doesn’t have a [French] passport went in there and spent, through his lawyer, a whole lot of time fighting for him not to reveal information which is vital for a settlement of this Constitutional matter. Mr Skerritt says, as I understand it through his lawyer, if I go into the box, if I reveal the information I will be incriminating myself.  What does that mean? It means that you are admitting that what is being said of you is true. If you go on the stand you can either say ‘it’s not true, I don’t have a passport’ or you will say ‘it is true’ and present it. If you say that [you] have a passport then that is the problem for you.”

He concluded, “Mr Skerritt has shown us that he knows that he wasn’t qualified. He knows he has the information with respect to that disqualification, but he is not going to say. [Attorney for the petitioners Douglas] Mendes made a statement there earlier that what we need is for the people to speak the truth and to protect the rule of law.”

The matter is expected to continue on Tuesday when attorney David Bruney takes the stand.

THE CONSTITUTION SHOULD BE CHANGED TO ALLOW NO ONE TO RUN FOR OFFICE WITH DUAL CITIZENSHIP – PERIOD. YOU CANNOT SWEAR ALLEGIANCE TO ONE COUNTRY FULLY IF YOU SWEAR ALLEGIANCE TO ANOTHER. HOW CAN YOU SWEAR TO TWO OR THREE OR FOUR. IF THEY HAVE TO FIGHT – WHO DO YOU FIGHT FOR. OUR CONSTITUTION SHOULD NOT ALLOW DUAL CITIZENSHIP FOR THE HIGHEST OFFICES IN DOMINICA – PERIOD!!!

my view i agree, but you do not have to fight for any country if you so chose not to,for example Ali refused to go to war and he is a US born citizen, but my question is what does this ministers use when they travel to the US or french territory,do they use french or US passports or diplomatic passports,if it is the latter then i do not see the need that they should hold dual citizenship.

let me also add @my view,i even have to contradict myself because i said that i agree with your comment, but we all know with dominica hardships which we all been or going through, i say been through because some of us got that chance to own a US or french passport or visa,in dominica that is a big deal,so really and truly i do not see why fight down them man because they own there dual citizenships, because that is the norm dominica a lot people wish they hard a visa much more a US or french passport.

To me, this whole case is an insult to us Dominicans. The politicians have so divided us that we now see plainly in terms of blue or red. As I see it, when UWP was in office, more than one of them had dual citizenship. One of them even lived overseas and only came down for Parliament. They always acted like this was perfectly legal. so let me ask, if a padna raping women it is ok as long as no woman takes him to court? A crime is only a crime if you are arrested or sued? What??!!!!

I agree that if Skerrit and StJean had dual citizenship that they should nto have contested. However, I have a serious problem with Green and James acting like they are standing as pillars of democracy on an issue which they themselves were knowingly in the wrong for YEARS!!

I am neither blue nor red. Personally, I have no respect for how politicians have divided our people. This is not about democracy, people. This is about politicians fighting to be back in power.

Why cant we stop bringing the name of our country to the gutter? Why cant we work together to build this little country of ours that has gone through so much hardship? Dominica is sadly enough, still recovering from the ravages Hurricane David, yet we have these so called ‘patriots’ sabutarging our little country every single day.The UWP and their goons, including the so called ‘investigative journalist’ are just a bunch of traitors that will do anything for power. They realise the only way they can topp;e the Labor Government is by destroying the head…so t hey are gunning for his head-painting him dark. Have’nt you all done enough? On the contrary, I spent the entire summer in DA, when this case was truly “heating up.” And to be frank, you would never know that this was an issue worthhy on note. Nor was it apparent Dominicans were the least interested in the UWP and its antics. The noise that you hear regarding the party is caused by the acoustics of their ecochamber.

Fact is, in DA, you would never know the UWP is present, let alone relevant. Of course, if you are an avid follower of Q95, you would believe the ruling party is in all sorts of trouble. Not so according to my own observation – with my own two coco zye.

So what does the relevance of UWP have to do with the fact that skerritt violated the constitution? Is that how justice works in Dominica? so your very enlightened view of life in Dominica is; if you are a nobody the police can shoot you down and that’s ok because you are a nobody in society.

As a very disgruntled and responsible voter ( I vote wisely) I must admit that I am really not interested in the emotional aspects nor the partisan hoopla of this case. If some of us would just step back and think out of the box – just put all the emotional and party baggage aside and realize what we are dealing with. Ladies and Gentlemen we are dealing with men and women who are playing and or preying on your weakness. The weakness of not being independent in thoughts and decisions. The way I see it both sides of the political divide have one intension only – that is pure greed and power hungry.
Pick anyone of the player in this and tell me how clean they are- not Ron or Eddie and most definitely not Tony, Skerrit (very filthy) nor Peter St Jean.
People are motivated by greed and when society fail to curb those who adopt a Machiavellian attitude to full fill their greed then unsuspecting , gullible and even the vigilant people suffer. Just think Bernie Madoff and the corrupt SEC; think Gadaffi and his family, Sadam.
I feel that we are primarily responsible for the situation that we are in right now- we cheer on these greedy criminals when they commit crimes based on party affiliation and not upon the basic human decency , simple morality. We are even prepared to lift these chronic criminals up on the religious pulpits.

Essentially two wrongs can’t make thing right. Why don’t we unite as one voice and let the crooked politicians know that we will not stand for this level of irresponsibility. It is obvious that politicians from both sides display criminal behavior and as a civilized society we choose not to jump on the right wagon- One that will restore integrity in government and ensure a safe place for our future generation.

      September 8, 2011

I concur with you my Brother. Those who have been blind-dyed with color are unable to see the true realities of the political partisan garbage that exists in Dominica now. The era of integrity in government has long passed.
But having said that I can foresee the direction this case will go because I have already seen partiality of the judges. The most compelling piece of evidence in this case would be the presentation of the passports but the judges have decided to exclude that and refuse to have the PM’s passport subpoenaed. If those guys go scotch free we will continue to see further disregard for the laws of the country and erosion of integrity and subsequently erosion of democracy because it will embolden those law breakers.

Our Savior said that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can move mountains. Dominicans evil last for a time, and the architect of evil, who is satan knows that. Therefore, it is busy signal all over the place, satan is hurriedly trying to spread his corruption.

We should wait steadfastly, for the hour is near….all evil works shall come to an end. Skerrit cannot lie forever, and he did not create Dominica so he is never going to get the opportunity to fully destroy it. He is doing damage of course but I have deep faith that these are all repairable, God did not give us a spirit of fear but that of power, love and discipline.

Let us continue to pray, talk less and pray more, because God still answers prayers, he will save us.

    Jesus our Lord,our King,our Judge,our

    Lawgiver,He will save us.

Jesus said “My kingdom is not of this world. If

My kingdom were of this world,My servants

would fight, so that I should not be

delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is
    not from here.”

He came to His own,and His own did not receive Him.
But as many as received Him,to them He gave the right to become children of God,to those who believe in His name:
who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man,but of God.

Such hope we have.We will receive countless blessings,Joy and many other incorruptible gifts from our King Jesus. This is His Promise to all His children.

Do you desire to be qualified and worthy of such rewards?

Our LORD GOD gives to His servants, and of

them who He has given, He commanded and

instructed. For He is our Shepherd and

only His sheep hears His voice, and He knows

    them, and they follow Him.

LORD, AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE CONTINUALLY PRAY, TAKE NOT YOUR HOLY SPIRIT FROM US AMEN.

        @Dawoud A Darroux

I’ll say with you! Disgracefull it is indeed!

But that is the way of the human mind. That is the reason Jesus once prayed on behalf of this human mind, saying: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do”

It is so unfortunate that those who do not know what they are doing, includes, men and women of governments–even in our country, Dominica.

But faith people of Dominica “Let not your hearts be troubled” Believe in God Almighty, Eternal Spirit, with the Mind of Love.

By the influence of His Person–Jesus Christ, among us and within us, He continues to be our Supreme control.

Are you kidding me? They have now lowered the standard of politics in Dominica. Do they really believe this will get them elected? I mean Ron Green admitted in Court to holding dual citizenship when he was elected into office = Mr. Pot meet Mr. Kettle.

Don’t you think that your comment proves you to be a true supporter of corruption?
While by his admission Mr Green also took the constitution for a ride, you and your people knew this but did nothing about it. The labour party should have taken Mr Green and anyone else in breach of the law to task. And it is my understanding that Mr Green renounced his American passport before the last election, unlike your great heroes.
All I can see is you people are hell bent on taking Dominica down a painful road of greed.
So to the heroes of Dominica who are fighting this evil, remember, sometimes you have to be a rebel, when you are doing righteous works, like Jesus, when he arrived in the temple and chased the vendors to the streets and brother Moses, who stood before Pharaoh demanded, set my people free. Yes they were rebels with a course, like your course, a righteous course.
