DFP to recruit 21 candidates for next general election

Vital said the candidates will be “honest men and women”

Newly elected leader of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), Kent Vital, has revealed that the party is well on its way towards bringing together a full slate of 21 “capable and honest men and women” as candidates to contest the next general election in Dominica.

There are 21 constituencies in Dominica and the next general election is constitutionally due in 2019.

Vital spoke at a DFP press conference held on Tuesday, August 29th 2017 at the Garraway Hotel.

Vital stated that the men and women that the party is looking to recruit will be of good standing and play a pivotal role in community development.

“We are well on our way to assembling a team of capable men and women general elections who will contest all twenty-one seats at the next general elections. These will include men and women who serve in our communities and men and women who can listen to the people,” he said.

He stated that the government, like the Freedom Party, should take issues such as proper implementation systems and sticking to the code of integrity and love for nation seriously in order to pursue strategies outlined in developmental plans for the country.

“That is why the Dominica Freedom Party will present the right people to contest the next general election and will be holding these persons to a high standard,” he added.

Vital noted that his party will also share with the public its strategies and plans, which the DFP has no issue with the government adopting, for development for Dominica as it will be outlined in their Manifesto.

According to the DFP Leader, he is determined to follow humbly in the footsteps of Dame Mary Eugenia Charles, and as a political leader will guard the interests of the DFP zealously.

“I am determined to follow in the footsteps of Mary Eugenia Charles in that regard. As political leader, I will guard the party’s brand zealously, and I know that we have others on the new executive and around this country that will help me do just that,” he remarked.

It is very refreshing to see DFP coming back to its true form. Almost everyone above 45 years old can relate to the great works that DFP did to put Dominica on the map. I for one has always been a DFP supporter. I have never voted for any other party and will continue to vote for DFP.
Just a word of advise, I will like to see the DFP open a website and go online where we can go to seek information about your plans and how we can help develop the party.
I would l just like to ask Mr. Vital if he is going to keep his long hair while he goes around the world to meet other leaders? It is your right but sadly appearance matters in the world.

“I would l just like to ask Mr. Vital if he is going to keep his long hair while he goes around the world to meet other leaders? It is your right but sadly appearance matters in the world.” ….You got that right!

No bashing but he needs to refine his “appearance” because the world world still has its perceptions of what a country’ leader should look like. That hairstyle has to go period! Mayo would have none of that GANGSTA appearance representing the good old DFP

Assertive like Mama Eugenia!

When are we going to be our own person? We have been programmed to believe that appearance determines success and leadership. The above statements are no different from the statements made by the slavers – These are black people they can learn. What I hear from above is he can’t be a leader because he has long hair. This is 2017 – we need to grow out of this slavish mentality.

I will run under one three conditions. I get to keep tbe name Shaka Zulu. 2) When i win i want to lead the investigation on fraud, abuse of gov, bribery, money laundering, and all suspicion of crime by government officials, past, present, and future against the constitution, laws, and people of Dominica. Lastly i get to pass the motion to increase punishment for these crimes. I am only doing 5 years.

Yes, you have to be realistic, but you cannot come on the scene scratching your head. You must say and believe with the help and support of the electorate victory is sure.

I say amen to the person who suggested a haircut to the leader of the party I strongly support. Amen and amen.

You are the new party leader. I think you should get a haircut. Those long dreadlocks or braids will not get doors opened in a corporate boardroom. I have been in many of them and people tend to be conservatively groomed.

A good political leader would first attempt to establish a political base from a secure costituency;! but DFP has none. Next, Dame Eugenia Charles brought discipline and integrity to governance in Dominica but as far as the dominant issues such as economic and social planning she was silent; agricultural crop diversification was her only notable pursuit.
Economists tend to take cover behind vague terminology such as “strategies” and provide no details regarding execution. We know our needs in Dominica for we are a well educated community, but no contending party expounds policies that create opportunities and jobs for the unemployed. The political parties are themselves financially handicapped and are mere pawns to the bourgeoisie to whom they revert for their slightest financial needs. We can’t accommodate three political parties in Dominica – two of which are the same, and one a combination of both.

  13. August 30, 2017

Be careful with words used, when you recruit people, are you not hiring or enlisting , as oppose with having a selected group coming together for a national cause? you may also need to take off that monkey suit off your body.Do you really want to follow humbly into the foot steps of Euginia Charles, instead of chatting your own course? are you interested in being a puppet of the super powers and have nothing to show, but making a show? well, if you are willing to lead your parties brand zealously, your start is already misguided, Remember, under Ms Charles, the DLP was ultra right, is this what you want for Dominica going forward? time will be the judge.Bob D.

Politicians always sound convincingly generous, noble and well intentioned when in opposition. They often overuse the words transparency, inclusion, integrity, honesty and many lofty others. They promise fairness, no victimization and prosperity for all. When they get into office, they feather their own nests and leave the nesting grounds of the majority of the population desert-like. The politicians in power become enormously wealthy by which their regular salaries cannot account for their riches. Meanwhile the poor man’s lot remains the same or even deteriorate. Their only concern is to stir up political division to retain power ad infinitum.

Well here is guess: First though, Blackmoore said Petite Savanne is dangerous and does not want the people to return there so I conclude it’s no longer a constituency and does not need a candidate. So 1. Grandbay: Crispin G; 2. Soufriere: Fredrick Baron; 3. Roseau South: Astaphan; 4. Roseau Central: Kent Vital; 5. Roseau North: Billy Doc; 6.. Mahault: Boso; 7..St. Joseph: The nurse and I will leave it as that; 8. Salisbaury: Hillary? 9. Colihault: Hubert Sabie; 10. Potsmouth: Murphy W; 11. Cottage: Dr. Christian; 12. Vielle-case: Nurse R.. but she too crook; 13. Paix Bouche: Roselyn P, because she is freedom at heart 14. Wesley: Gloria S, because skerrit fired she; 15. Marigot: Samuel; 16. Carib Territory: Granaux because he too was fired by Skerrit 17. Castle Bruce: A. Bannis; 18. Grand Fond: I. Stephenson because he knows Skerrit was about to fire him before illness; 19: Delice: Fontaine; 20: Roseau Valley: George. That’s a good team

  17. August 30, 2017

The days of Mary Eugenia Charles is gone and she did all she could so we cannot turn back the hands of time as to how she governed,. The party have to find it own path that will keep them moving forward not backward, we have a lot of work to do to accomplish back our status again we can’t sit back an lament on what was we have to come up with new methods to take us beyond the norm . We have to be honest to ourselves the party is in the lowest once we can accept that then and only then we can all come together to work hard in moving forward and winning a few seats in the next election.

  18. Advocacy - Electoral reform first
    August 30, 2017

Shouldn’t the struggle and advocacy be about ensuring ELECTORAL REFORMS and Skerritt’s DLP reluctance and stubbornness not to do so? ID cards were promised in 2013 for 2014 elections? Nothing to ensure FREE and FAIR elections. What is that political beating- on-the-chest about 21 seats?
Is Kent too full of himself?

What about advocacy on those corrupt practices, giving of our DIPLOMATIC PASSPORTS to crooks and criminals? Is consistent pressure being placed on Skerritt about all those extremely bad governance issues?
Dominicans have not heard forcefully from Kent condemning those evil ways. But spewing of elections and elections and candidates foolishness. The time now is ripe to be more vocal about implementation of ELECTORAL Reforms. We may well go into yet another general election without those reforms, namely, Issuance of Voter ID Cards, equal access to all media, and importantly CAMPAIGN FINANCING laws. Those, above all else must be priority.

      August 31, 2017

You are a bit full of yourself! Again, one of those Dominicans who believe they are right and the other person’s approach is wrong. Let us just entertain your approach for a minute, don’t you think enough have been said and advocated for on these issues that you have raised above? Haven’t the UWP been going on about this for the best part of a decade now? How much more advocacy do these issues need? Dominicans keep asking for new development policies to take Dominica forward and away from Labour Party path, what does UWP offer? The DFP needs to reorganize itself first, to be in a position to replace the Labour Party as the Government of Dominica, and this is what it is doing. Let DFP do DFP and UWP keep on doing UWP, we shall see who forms the next Government first!

Kent, the whole idea of getting the DFP together and well prepped for the next general election sounds good. With you, I also think you also need to get ready by visiting a barber shop to get a hair cut if you want to represent Dominca as it’s next prime minister. I hope Samuel have already spoke to you about that.. If not, the DFP will go down in Dominca’s electoral history as the biggest joke.

this man has represented ECCB(Eastern Caribbean Central Bank) on an international level. he has also represented the CDB(Caribbean Development Bank) on an international level. he has met with leaders of countries across the Caribbean doing the business of the bank. do you really believe something as small minded as a haircut will prevent him from doing the work of the country. come on my people it’s just a hairstyle and there are many people around the world with dreads who are working on diplomatic levels either for their country or company. let’s stop being so small minded and focus on the matters at hand.

We are voting for him for what he believes, what he represents and the good his will be doing for Dominica. Forward we go!!

  20. Not Me Alone
    August 30, 2017

It is good to be ambitious but it’s very dangerous to be over ambitious. I understand the politics and the game that has to be played. As a DFP I also understand there are some freedomites that will never vote neither UWP or DLP because they are freedomites. However, I believe first and foremost the DFP role should be to use their influence to deliver Dominica from the hands of Skerrit and the DLP, since they sold the party to the DLP in the 2000 elections, where we at least had two seats. Right now I don’t see where the DFP can win one seat, let alone to get 21 candidates. The UWP and DFP should work a strategy where the strongest candidate runs, though I don’t see the strongest candidate in any constituency, except maybe Soufriere, if F. Baron is the DFP candidate. They can’t get a strong candidate in Vielle Case and I hope they don’t try to work and reveal their secrets with that crooked “Swallow” guy, Who can they get in Paix Bouche, Portsmouth, Cottage, Colihaut etc.?

Kudos to you for starting your political journey with a press conference. Of course you know this is something our Prime Minister hardly engages in, and which is unacceptable in a democracy. I am not inspired by the genre of present Caribbean LEADERS (maybe just 2 exception), because leadership to most means LYING, CHEATING and STEALING, I can see that these traits are anathema to you, so this is LEADERSHIP. You preach transparency? This is leadership. You preach accountability? This is leadership. Hope you do not change your cloak along the way, because in a poor developing country like Dominica we need men of INTEGRITY to take us forward, I cannot see it in the DLP, In fact this DLP is probably the worst political party ever to lead this land. So I keep on looking, and will not shy away from criticizing you when you deserve it,
