DFP, UWP welcome P-POD to political arena

The leaders of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) and the United Workers Party (UWP) have both welcomed the Peoples Party of Dominica (P-POD) into the island’s political arena.

DNO caught up with Lennox Linton of the UWP and the DFP’s Kent Vital at an Electoral Reform Symposium on Tuesday and questioned them on the announcement by P-POD’s leader, Sapphire Carrington, this week that the party will be contesting the next general election. Her announcement formally marked the entry into politics of a party that was largely confined to social media and the internet.

“This party has been around for a little while,” Vital said. “They are only now announcing formally but they have had quite a media presence. I am aware of their existence and their activities and I have heard some of the utterances from the political leader and she seems to be a person that is very concerned about what is happening in Dominica, someone who is passionate about bringing change to our land.”

He said based on this, he was welcoming P-POD.

“Under our Constitution, it is the right of anyone to organize, to associate with a group in order to represent themselves for national elections,” he stated. “As a fundamental right, as a right, they have under our laws, we welcome them, that is democracy.”

Vital said he hopes that P-POD does politics with the right attitude and the right approach, things that the DFP has been championing.

“I hope for them, like the Freedom Party the foundation will be integrity because integrity is the most critical thing needed in Dominica at this point to take our country forward,” he stated.

Linton said he also welcomed P-POD, saying that he hoped the party will be like the UWP which has been focusing on the “rule of law and the harmonious development of all the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica.”

“I don’t know much about this party, I have heard the name but to the extent that it is a new entrant in into the fray, they are welcomed,” he said.

Until this young lady presents her party members, most of us will not take her seriously. I listened to the excerpts of her speech on the radio and she sounds too animated for my liking. We still have not established where PPOD is operating from, we only know they are out of DA. That in itself is an issue.

  2. April 25, 2018

DFP and PPOD should just merge forces, because the two are on the same page. They ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

  3. April 25, 2018

Well all of these political parties are in one bubble, spewing hot air. And to those who are asking for DLP to welcome Carrington, be reminded that her party consists of only one individual. We take things seriously in the Labour Party. Therefore our leaders do not have time to play games and entertain this one-(wo)man pappyshow of a party. This is serious business!

  4. April 25, 2018

Linton doesn’t want Dominicans living abroad, who own land, send remittances, support their children and parents from a distance to come down to cast their vote, but he is endorsing the launch of PPOD, whose members are oversees, operating from social media, namely Facebook? This has to be the biggest joke of the year right?

  5. April 25, 2018

The UWP and DFP should be worried, PPOD might take their votes lol!

I welcome them too, just that all those opposed to the destruction of Skerrit’, should find a common ground to work together to remove Skerrit and his gang. We can take no more. Here is a version of Psalm 23, that reflects the destruction of Dominica under Skerrit, which I believe we should call the Skerrit version:

“Roosevelt Skerrit is the Shepherd we did not want, he leadeth us towards Total Destruction, he restoreth our faith in CBI, he guideth us in the path of Unemployment for his Egos sake. Yea though we walk thru this beautiful land we have become beggars , for no food is with US, he anointed our souls with toilets and promises our Expenses runneth over, surely Poverty and mizere shall follow us all the days he’s in Office and Our Land and passports will be Sold, forever and ever AMEN!”

Disappointing, a country with less than 60,000 people have four different, possibly five different political parties (DLP, DFP, UWP, Pappy and Now this). The obvious question is what is the attraction? Are we still employing the divide and conquer mentality which was so efficiently and effectively used during our days of slavery? It would suggest that if every one who has a political view must form a new political party, then the existing parties are either non-accommodating to differing views or is unwilling to work with others for the common good – the development of Dominica. Either way it does not augur well for the existing political parties or for Dominica’s future development. Can we please come together and talk things over, we need serious committed politicians with a singularity of objective.

I disagree dominicans that in control doing koshone, no divide and conquer here because that would require a foreign power like the whiteman

        Da Passports;
On a point of enlightenment, Can we agree to disagree? On the divide and conquer scenario, could you view the story as simply this? Let us suppose that there are 10 votes in Dominica to be gained by the politicians, by having one dominant party, let us say that that party commands 50% of the votes, one has 4 parties striving for 5 votes, by dividing up the votes, the opposition is weakened and as such is conquered despite there best efforts. No foreign power is involved on the surface, is there?

Serious question, since when did Dominica have less than 60,000 people? And apart from the obvious reasons like migration, death etc, why do you think Dominica’s population hasn’t risen like the other islands? I’ve never understood that. Like, around 200 years ago, St Lucia had about 20,000 people & now it’s about 180,000, Grenada had about 30,000 and now its about 110,000, Guadeloupe was around 100,000 and now its about 400,000. About 100,000 slaves were imported to Dominica, yet Dominica’s population hasn’t risen over 100,000 since. Aren’t Dominicans making babies or something?

The DLP government is busy working for the people of Dominica some of whom are still roofless and homeless at this time as another hurricane season approaches. It is amazing how some of these so called political parties are so clueless about the needs of the people of Dominica at this time. As a side note how did the electoral reform symposium go? I guess the place was so packed it was standing room only right? DNO please publish the photos of the massive turn out for us. These guys heads burried in the sand and clueless about the bread and butter issues that confront Dominicans at this time. Grab a hammer grab a pick axe and go out and help us show ys you are standing with us. Otherwise, take your empty words and get out of our way. We have a Nation to rebuild!!!!!

    • April 25, 2018

Why should the DLP welcome a party with only one member? The statements by the DFP and UWP is just political papyshow.

Welcome Ms Carrington, Mr Leevy, Ms Williams, Mr Pierre, Mr. Joseph Mr Alleyne, Mr Drigo, And the rest of the Orogress Leaders. I’ve been following you all from day 1 and I am happy to see today. These are the type of people we need to see in government – people with integrity, people who are qualified, Dominicans who are experienced and people who care. DFP I am hoping you two will work together or Mr Vital should just join PPOD. The Progress this team have made is simply remarkable and any good thinking individual will observe that this is the change Dominica needs. I’m looking forward to seeing more positive things from you all- stay focused – I must say I am proud of you and where I see our country will go under your leadership.

Of course its a joke. Even the name is ridiculous and tells you how myopic their views and objectives are. My main focus though is how mr Linton always puts his foot in his mouth. Dominicans livong abroad should not come home vote in elections. However, Dominicans living abroard are welcome to partixipart as candidates. I have said before this guy talks too much and thats his biggest problem.

So the DFP should join P-POD and not P-Pod joining the DFP? Mistake number 1

You have no confidence in the UWP and feel the names you mentioned the UWP does not add up. Mistake number 2

Dominicans will see no reason not to vote the DLP. If by your post the DFP is no good, the UWP is no good, what do we know of P-Pod?

My future and my children future and Dominica on a whole are in good hands right now.

Good luck P-Pod but not with my vote.

Pea in a Pod String you along Beans would be a better name.
