Distraction – Opposition leader on cabinet reshuffle

Hector John

A distraction is how Opposition Leader Hector John is describing news that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is expected to reshuffle his Cabinet.

“I see it as a complete distraction because there are several pertinent issues that need to be addressed,” John said on Wednesday.

Recently a source told Dominica News Online that Skerrit is expected to shuffle his cabinet soon. “The Prime Minister is not happy with how things are going and as he stated at the swearing in ceremony, a reshuffle would come so that should not be a surprise at all,” the source said.

But according to John there are many issues surfacing which need addressing and the cabinet reshuffle is to just to distract Dominicans from them. “There are issues of the MOU resurfacing, we have Brian Alleyne being appointed Chief Justice resurfacing,” John stated.

He said that the issue of a new ambassador to the UK, the dual citizenship court matter with the prime minister, the IPO inquiry, the completion of the Pond Casse Road and the proposed pull-out of American Eagle from Puerto Rico are all matters that need addressing.

“So there are several issues of national importance that need to be addressed,” John stated. “And all we are getting is distraction.”

Meanwhile the Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) has described the present cabinet as a “jobs for the boys cabinet” arguing that it is “totally ridiculous” to have one of such a large size.

Edison James also pointed out that the government is nothing more than just the Prime Minister himself. “The government is Roosevelt Skerrit,” he stated. “He insults the cabinet members as he wants, he humiliates them in public, he ridicules them in public and this is seen in recent statements on the Shernel Prince fiasco where he said the Prime Minister makes policy. I understand the prime minister is first among equals but when he comes to the public and says the Prime Minister makes policy, I expect the cabinet to make policy.”

Both James and John are of the view that the cabinet is a complete failure.

There must be a burning fire for the candle to shine bright. Thank you Prime Minister for all that is being made possible through your administration. I am grateful. One day, Dominicans will say, if Skerrit was in power…but too late shall be their cry.

God Bless you Dominica, God Bless our Ministers.

Reshuffling is necessary… leave no stones unturned… less room for bobol. When you done, reshuffle Senior Officials if you can….

The fact is, a manager is only effective if the staff is effective. We elected the ministers. Oftentimes we already know that many of the persons running for elections for all political parties are not qualified to be ministers but we elect them anyway. We elect them. So now that they are square pegs why are we complaining?

It is therefore, up to the PS, and the supervisory staff to ensure that plans are implemented effectively and efficiently. Politicians just want to look good and to remain in office so as long as the staff does a great job and makes them look good they will support.

“Accept the things we cannot change and change the things we can”. This is always a great stance to take.

Jean domnique pas feb, Ambrose an agriculturist, tim tim a financial wiz? why cuz he has a shop? Because Darroux is a doc he will be a good minister of health? people people its all about MANAGEMENT! If they lack management skills, strategic planning ability, they cannot handle any mininstry. There is a huge difference between knowing what is a paracetamol and managing the pharmacy to increase prodictivity of employees, and to grow the business.

“SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A Puerto Rican newspaper says the regional affiliate of American Airlines is planning to suspend its operations in Puerto Rico next year as it tries to shave $75 million per year from labor costs.
El Vocero reported Sunday that American Eagle will close its Puerto Rico operations by March 2013. The paper is citing a Friday memo from the Association of Flight Attendants to American Eagle’s roughly 150 employees on the U.S. island.
The flight attendants union did not immediately respond to calls Sunday seeking comment.
American Airlines spokeswoman Dori Alvarez said only that the airline has not made any schedule change announcements for American Eagle in San Juan.
American and parent AMR Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in November.”

You must learn to contribute to the dialogue.Facebook is there for all of us. What do the government ministers spend thousands of hours doing?Have you ever thought of that. Thousands of us know, except you!
I have said time and time again that this government is a lazy and incompetent government, the reshuffling will make no difference, the fact is or the crux of the matter is they cannot do what they are mandated to do. It’s incompetency. The reshuffling will soon bring in more poverty, crime, violence, etc.
      Good observation Mr John.

My opinion, the way our opposition leaders behaving is like a bunch of jokers, you never hear anything positive from those jokers as to how best we develop our country. But as soon as the Prime minister makes a public statement those dummies jump up and say nothing of any substance. How those guys expect people to take them seriously? My advise to those jokers do your home work like yesterday build your foundation so Early election or not you all will not be in a state of panic and like Yo-YO to allow the PM to make you all look foolish.

Aye Ma bro. You need to spend more time performing your ethical duties at work than spending so much quality time on social networking. Be more productive and develope the country. The UWPites need to rethink and utilize new strategies to gain public recognition and respect. However i think never will the UWP have a chance to grace the doors of parliament as a government.

I usually ponder on the merits of cabinet reshuffling and have come up with two words: INDECISION on the part of the leader, who distributes cabinet positions to presumably worthy parliamentarians (2) FAILURE/INCOMPETENCE, on the part of the ministers to have their ministries taken away from their management.

Then, the questions hit me hard like a stone from a slingshot: Didn’t the prime minister knew beforehand that he was putting square pegs in wrong holes? (I clearly recalled before he announced his 2009 cabinet positions, people was on the radio complaining of rumors they had been hearing about certain ministries being assigned to disqualified individuals.

Thus, why did it take the prime minister approximately three years to see that Dr. Darroux and Mrs. Pierre are attached to the wrong ministries; that Mr. George, an agriculturist, could more effectively share his expertise if he were attached to the Ministry of Agriculture; while Mr. Timothy could help him out in the Finance Ministry as opposed to being dumped uselessly into Health?

Didn’t the prime minister worked with these men already(yes, I believe he had done so for approximately two terms now); so, how could he have placed ministers he had worked with in the past in the wrong ministries this time around? Perhaps, Mr, John is right, talks of the reshuffling might be a distraction.

Before, I could finish unraveling these questions another one came from nowhere and also damaged some neurons in my brain. Isn´t it time for our constitution to stipulate qualifications (certificates, etc) for politicians? This, I believe would dissolve the conundrum prime ministers have to place qualified persons, or persons with the know-how to head a particular ministry.

After this questions drifted away unanswered, another one rushed in and lingered on my mind transiently:: Shouldn’t some PS be sacked or reshuffled too as it is they who really run the affairs of the ministries and not the minister himself, who usually acts as supervisor?

However, I see that I was causing too much brain damage to myself; so before, I had to be referred to Dr. Benjamin,I lifted both hands up in the air took two deep breaths and say, the one who captains the ship is the one who has to take all the blame. I abandoned that thought….

…just curious to see the fruits of the reshuffle if it is really going to take place.

Hindsight is always 20-20. If you can see now that you made a bad decision in the past, it is your duty to correct it. As I see it, the PM sees a need for a change so he is going to reshuffle the cabinet.
How many of us have the guts to admit that mistakes were made and that we are going to correct it?

Athie had all sorts of dqualifications and what did he do in the min. of agriculture??, it was said that UWP ministers had several masters degree and what did they do to our country??.
the notion that one should have Phd or what ever to be a minister is bull shit, you need none of those to be an effective manager or adrinistrator. let us first look at how we elect a representative, he must be liked by his constituents, look at most of the so called smart people in the community, they are disconnect with their community, cannot identify with the people.
