The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has set its eyes on China-educated, Casius Darroux, as a possible candidate to contest the Salybia constituency at the next general elections, well placed sources have indicated to Dominica News Online.
However the DLP is not saying much on the matter and DNO was told that all candidate-related matters should be directed to prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.
“I know nothing about that … sorry I don’t know nothing about that,” DLP Public Relations Officer, Dr. Philbert Aaron, told DNO. “Anything to do with candidates, try to reach the prime minister. I’m not even in the universe where that is …the universe for that is with the prime minister.”
Even Darroux is not confirming nor denying the claims.
“Nothing is concrete at this time,” he told DNO.
But according to sources, the matter is already etched in stone as Darroux, who recently returned from China, has already started to campaign, although on a limited basis.
If the sources are correct, Darroux will replace the current MP, Ashton Graneau, who has indicated he might not contest the next election.
“The truth is I am seriously considering not seeking re-election,” he told a press conference in September last year.
He also stated that there are many “ongoing projects” that need to be completed in the constituency and concluded that the people should be the judge of his performance.
But almost five months later in February 2014, in an apparent change of heart, Graneau told GIS that if given a second term by the people he serves, his emphasis will be on economics, beginning with a Farine Processing Plant.
Many sources DNO spoke to on the matter said replacing Graneau with Darroux is not going down well with many Labourites in the constituency.
Some argue that he is a stranger and is hardly known in the constituency.
“Some people are saying only die hard Labourites that will vote for him,” one of the sources, who is familiar with the matter, said.
There have also been rumors that Graneau will also be replaced by Development officer for the Kalinago Territory, Sylvanie Burton.
DNO attempted to get a reaction from Graneau and Skerrit on the matter but was not successful.
The Salybia Consituency consists of the Kalinago Territory, Atkinson and Antrizle.
In the last general election Graneau defeated United Workers Party candidate, Claudius Sanford.

I believe that the Salybia Constituency should be left alone to decide on a candidate whom they feel confident with. Taking a decision to decide on a candidate for the people is not democratic at all. Those days a long gone. The Kalinago people are much more educated now. When I look at the way things are unfolding in Dominica these days, I am left to conclude that PM Skerrit is in serious trouble not just because of the election results but because of some dirty pending deals he may have entered into. On one hand, it appears as if the brother is hoping and praying that he does not win the election and is taking necessary steps to lose. Right on the other hand he seems want to give his masters or creditors the impression that he is trying hard to win, so they don’t come after him. The brother really needs prayer!

Yet in 1990, he ran against two doctors and beat both of them. He went up in 1995 against a far more educated candidate and again beat him. It was he that built the High School in Castle Bruce, where many of our Kalinago children get their education today. You know why, although he was not educated, he was with a UWP team that was willing and able to work for the people unlike this Skerrit thing who is only concerned about himself. Yes we support education but education is not the key to political success. We need team work and that’s what makes TEAM DOMINICA the only choice.

Its always good to see my fellow countrymen step up and try to represent the citizenry regardless of their political leanings. When Skerro masterminded the coup that saw the overthrow of and ultimate demise of Mr. O, I like many others sang the praises of the them “young man” with a promising future ahead of him. Sadly and regretfully I was wrong for he became the 1st dictator that my country has come to know and for that I owe a debt to the people.
Having said that, I recognise that While Mr. Darroux’s intention’s may be noble he will be ineffective under the dictator lead DLP.
