Dominica becomes member of GOPAC

gopacDominica is now a member of the newly formed eight Caribbean States Chapter of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians against Corruption (GOPAC).

A summit of GOPAC was held in Port Of Spain on December 5 and 6 and Dominica was represented by United Workers Party (UWP) opposition leader, Hector John and opposition senator, Daniel Lugay.

No representative was sent by the Dominica Labour Party.

Representatives from Trinidad, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and St. Lucia, unanimously passed a declaration in recognition of the need to consolidate the international effort to tackle money laundering and to ensure that stolen assets are returned to their countries of origin, and recognizing that corruption contributes to poverty, insecurity and civil unrest, according to a release from the UWP.

The release noted that all the parliamentarians who attended, promised to “fulfill their role in providing the strong legislative framework to combat corruption and to encourage transparency and good governance. Parliamentarians present resolved to work collaboratively with other like – minded colleagues through GOPAC , to fulfill the mission of change in attitudes towards corruption.”

It went on to say that participants “resolved to continue the fight in holding governments accountable for the allocation and expenditure of public funds, to promote and support policies, legislation and capacity building, that curb or eliminate money and asset laundering in our jurisdiction.”

The new GOPAC members also signaled their intent to set up national chapters which will be open to present and former parliamentarians of all political parties to combat “corruption, money and asset laundering, through peer education workshops, and technical handbooks provided through GOPAC’s Global Task Forces.”

This is the 3rd occasion in quick succession offered to the DLP Administration to attend such an Anti – corruption / Campaign financing forum, Jamaica, Barbados and now Trinidad, with no show, but more sinisterly, actively trying to block UWP parliamentarians from participating, shame, shame, shame

Why everything have to be so political? Does it matter if no.one from the DLP was there? Dominica had two representative there.DNO stop making everything about politics.

    • December 12, 2013

DNO had to mention that there was no representation from the DLP because they were supposed to send representatives to the meeting as well. But they chose not to send any from the government said. Why? We all know why.The truth is that this had to funded by government and they refused to do it. UWP had to go on their own. Why didn’t Govt fund it when the money comes from our treasury and not from their purse. So this is very political and a violation as well.

I love the term, “encourage transparency.? Boy all you make me laugh. The Guyanese Parliament has been in meeting(s)all last week looking into this same corruption matter. You talk about “corruption?” They all have dirty hands. Dominica and Guyana are heads of the pack. Let’s continue to talk of corruption – maybe someone will listen.

We to like to bring down our country and with no facts say all that is bad. Do some research and you will find that Dominica isn’t as corrupt as alot of countries includng caribbean countries. In no country will there be no corruption in Govt. The mighty USA has corruption in its Govt.
