Dominica Labour Party condemns statement made by David Bruney at a Citizen’s Forum in Layou

Petter St. Jean, President of the DLP

The executive of the Dominica Labour Party, strongly condemns the message issued by Mr. David Bruney, to peaceful and law abiding citizens, that they are too docile in expressing their disagreement over the approach of Government to the governance of this country.

Mr. Bruney`s subtle call on citizens to emulate the thuggery, looting and wanton destruction of life and property currently haunting England, by executing similar acts here in Dominica, is not only unpatriotic, but is downright distasteful, and a blatant disregard for the laws of the land which as an officer of the court, he has pledged to uphold, respect and defend.

The Labour Party finds it despicable that Mr. Bruney has clothed his call for lawlessness and criminal behavior in the guise of Emancipation. We are left to wonder if the learned gentleman is serious in advancing the view that the Emancipation of black people is taken to a higher level when they revert to the barbarism and disrespect for life and property that were the drivers of slavery and which characterized primitive civilizations.

The Labour Party stands proud on its achievements as the vanguard political organization, which has lifted the laboring classes and propelled them from being mere “tillers of wood and carriers of water,” to become the proud citizens who today own their own properties. Citizens are assured a sound education for their children and grandchildren that will lead them to success in life. We will defend these gains strongly and will not tolerate any move to destroy the assets and properties of those who have moved on through the progressive policies of the DLP.

We therefore appeal to all Dominicans to add their voices in condemnation of Mr. Bruney`s subtle but brutal call for chaos and pillage in our country.

Editor’s note: Below is the statement made by David Bruney.

I have a strong feeling and it is sad to say it which we are still in the realms of mental slavery and whether we like it or not. I mean my brothers Lennox and Angelo can talk, explain and they can do everything on radio, but what I saw in England this weekend was riots in the streets of London.

The people are rioting again, and why are they rioting? Because one of their people, one of their community was shot by police in a way that they thought was unlawful.

In England we fought for the right to be free, and I am not sure that we in Dominica are at that juncture, it may just be that we quite enjoy the type of governance that we have, but we have people here today that are obviously opposed but are there the numbers?

My fellow govt. ministers I sit with amazement to see how you all jump to bash opposition speech, wrong or right, opposition moves, wrong or right but not one of you guys strong enough to speak against the wrong doings in the country by members of your group. Not one of you will one day come openly and say the idea of the opposition is good and we should uphold it for the purpose of nation building,eg the voter I D cards. It is so alarming to see how all you sit like little moose boys and say nothing when the white massa lawyers say so many things out of order you dare not comment. When the master of the clan offer Dominica’s support to the barberick act of the lybia leader to the detriment of our tourist industry not a word from you guys. Will he sack you for speking truth to power? You are elected to serve the constituence and not the master of the clan. Right now only a selective few of you can speak and it has to be directed against anything the oppositions says.when last have we heard the member for colihaut, wesley, grandfond, petite savanne, dockwell brother, soufrierre, roseau south and the other mooomoos in the parliament, dont even talk about mr. john-yes from Castlebruce. Fellers is time to stand up for our country and set the prioriety straight.speak out for what is right doh matter from which side do it for dominica. Which one of you guys will see to it that the emanuel case is properly investigated and the criminals especially those wearing the coat and ties brought to justice??

there is only one set that getting rich some of you will leave with nothing like graneau and baron so stop that foolishness support dominica and not just the party that have you there bringing shame on the country.

Ministers please take my advice and start serving Dominica. Thanks very much for listening

Mr.St.Jean statement should have read like this:

The Labour Party stands proud on its achievements as the vanguard political organization, which has lifted the laboring classes and propelled them from being mere “tillers of wood and carriers of water,” to become the proud Beggars who today can proudly walk up Ministry steps and beg for plywood, galvanize and money to pay their bills.

Just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder so are our opinions on what is right or wrong in the actions or inactions of politicians and the party they represent. It is rather intriguing that despicable behavior from both sides of the political divide is accepted and glorified. The invasion of privacy is deemed accepted by those who adore the work of guys like Lennox et al. The blatant lies , corruption and misconduct on the part of the government is seen as a necessary evil by supporters of the DLP. The last time I checked we were a god fearing nation but alas even those who are suppose to be/ so called anointed ones of god are themselves guilty of condoning evil works by evil men. I hope that in the court deism the seemingly hypocrites will be asked to account for their failure to take a stand against the lies, deceit, thieving while poor people are struggling, the email hacking , Character assassins , money launderers and drug dealers.
If we don’t stand for something we will fall for anything.

There is never any appeal for the publics’ understanding. Nor any apology for the lack of transparency and accountability of our government or its ministers. August 15, 2011

We as a people need to be careful. Bruney is a lawyer and not because we may support him in certain things that he must not be condemned for wrong doing. The fact that he makes reference to what is happening in England as to action that we must take is infact asking that we behave the same way to achieve our so call objectives.

Today we will show that we are a civil people and we don’t have to sacrum to such barbaric behavior to achieve our goals. It was the British who enslave our people yet they remain uncivil and raciest. We are a better people. Bruney you may have learn from the British but you have been here long enough to know better,

I am now reading this from David Cameron the British PM address “Moral Decline and Bad behavior is not limited to a few of the poorest parts of our society. In the highest offices, the plushest boardrooms, the most influential jobs, we need to think about the example we are setting.” did it have to take this riot for this message to be heard??? as he rightfully indicated these problems may have existed but they were shied away from. and now they have come to a confrontation. if we want an non confrontational resolution to any problem we must stop running away and shying away from the issues glaring at us.

      • killing is killing.
        September 4, 2011

Yes, i agree. Bruney should not make that statement. disatisfied as some may be with the DLP, violence does not sole any problem. If we are a peaceful people as we claim, we will remember that the DLP was voted in by the people of Dominica more than once. And when the people of Dominica no longer wants the DLP then they will vote accordingly. Until then we should respect the current ruling party and stop all the negativity. I remember when Freedom and UWP was in power it was the same thimg. People was never satisfied. So get a life and vote in the next election that is all that we can do for now.

we thankfully have free speech in Dominica, which is why he can stand up and say as he pleases. This free speech also gives Pappy the right to drive around town spewing his nonsense at top volume, when the right to free speech is curbed then we really will be in a one party dictatorship.

    oops…. we there already.

    • killing is killing.
      September 4, 2011

Free speech is good but it does not mean that one should use their freedom of speech to encourage rioting. I have never heard riot solve any problem. Because the victims of the riots will not be politicians, it will be the same poor people that we are talking about.

    August 15, 2011

It must be clear by now to all, mr. Bruney included that the riots in the U.K. were not caused by the shooting of an assumed criminal by the police. It may have been a catalyst, if that. It was simply an excuse for wanton destruction and looting. The inference that this was race related and somehow harking back to our people’s days of slavery is misguided. However, mr. Bruney’s remarks are far from an incitement for riot and unrest. However, we must be very careful not to give the powers that be any excuse to impose restrictions of freedom or, God forbid, a state of emergency or martial law. Be aware that some elements may be itching just to do that!

      August 15, 2011

fear is an old instrument of political control.
if we give in to fear we will be crippled by it in all ways. history has taught us that “peaceful” “fearful”
races like the Arawak indians suffered brutal genocide at the hands of those races who were more advanced economically, but MOST OF ALL psychologically.

it was willie lynchs’ method of control described in “the making of a slave” to hold a race captive over 300 years by instilling fear in their hearts.

Yet another kinder garden attempt by tony and company to smear and destroy any one who is opposed to the present administration. The statement as posted by DNO does not in my opinion incite or call for violence. I’m not convinced either that there is an inference to spark violence. The very same people who are crying foul due to a simple statement by Bruney are the same ones who defended the threats by the current administration to unleash an armed police on peaceful demonstrators. The use of the SSU at the Isidore court proceeding could also be considered a threat. Let us not forget though that the UWP administration also used armed police officers to threaten civilians.
It is not my intension to defend Bruney however I cannot accuse the man of encouraging violence. Like the government supporters would say – show me the evidence.

It is the duty of every law abiding Dominican to respect our government, protect our government and when necessary correct our government… but always in responsible and civil manner.

I find Mr. Bruney’s Statement very dispicable and the fact that he will try to insight people to harphardously riot and destroy their communities in the underlying cause of dissatifaction with Government very distructive. That my brothers is infact the mental slavery realm that he mentioned still exist; “insight the fools to destroy themselves in the name of freedom, while it benifits the master.” The fact is that in promoting this riot, he knows that he will not be directly affected becuase the burning, looting, loss of life and destruction will not be in his community and hence not affect him.

I hope that he clarifies his statement and issue a statement to clarify that he was not implying that Dominicans kill each other, steal from each other, destroy each others property, destroy their communities in the name of protesting against the Government. Think about it people, “Who does this behavior affects and who benifits from that kind of behavior. You get my drift…Bruney and his Clan. Please do not destroy your communities and kill your neighbours so that these fools can then blame someone for you or your brother killing your neighbour.

      @Righteous

Yes! I get your drift, through 4 of your strong points and one of your questions: I qoute: “Who does this behaviour affect and who benifits from that behaviour?”

I answer this question for you:

We, ourselves! Those foolish youth who believe they must rebel and hurt their fellow man to have “freedom” will yearn for this very “freedom” in their latter years.

They will have children, who will develop in that cage of the mind they produced in them and nurtured them throughout growth. Their own children will rebel against them. Yes! For their “freedom” to exist in this world

Unfortunately, you have a 10-24 thumbs up/down. Those 24 do not see the chaos and the destructive, fruitless conduct that Mr.Bruney is trying to induce in the minds of our people of Dominica–especially younger ones.

But God will protect the humble, the ignorant, and the innocent–whoever they are. That is for sure!

So do not be discouraged. God made Gideon reduce his arm of 22,000 men to just 300; and by His power Gideon defeated the Philistine army without a throw of a sword from his army of the Israelites.

Continue to speak by your wisdom of faith. For this is the sword that conquers the world–our faith–the kind of faith that works through Love.

      • August 15, 2011

        @Dominican

A revolution that causes the destruction of people’s property, conduct bloodshed, leave behind the trail of pain, hardship, and suffering, that takes the lives of fellow human beings,is not a revolution of peace and freedom–it is not of God.

Satan is deceptive, his goal is to steal, kill and destroy. When human being choose to go along with his schemes, God does not interfer; and all they do is destroy their own selves–Satan goal for them.

There can be a revolution that will bring transformation–peace, harmony, unity, and tranquility–but God Almighty must be the Supreme leader of this revolution, not policemen, soldiers, and other human rebels.

The conducts in London is the work of your enemy, the devil–conducted by those who were charmed through his deception.

Please do not call for that conduct in our Dominica, as you suggest revolution as the solution–if indeed you are the Dominican you identified yourself to be.

I also believe that more people understand the concept of “revolution” much better than you do. That is why they will not condone to it in our Dominica.
