Douglas confident in Portsmouth

Labourites at Monday’s rally

Member of parliament for Portsmouth, Ian Douglas, has expressed confidence that the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) will win the constituency when general election is called.

Douglas will be facing his own cousin Cabral Douglas, as an independent candidate and United Workers Party (UWP) candidate, Jefferson James ,when the poll is called.

Douglas had refused to give a comment to DNO on facing Cabral on the political battlefield.

But speaking at a DLP rally in St. Joseph on Monday, Douglas said there should be no fear for Portsmouth.

“Have no fear for the Portsmouth constituency, Portsmouth constituency belongs to the Dominica Labour Party,” he said to thunderous applause.

He stated that Portsmouth has been voting Labour for the past 60 years and will do so for another 60 years “under Roosevelt Skerrit.”

“Because he is young, he is not even 50 yet, he has another 30 years to go,” he said.

Portsmouth has been a DLP stronghold for over 50 years. Prior to Ian Douglas, the persons who served as MP include Michael Douglas (Ian’s father) and Roosevelt (Rosie) Douglas (Ian’s uncle). At the time of his death, Rosie was prime minister of Dominica.

Sometimes I am really embarassed to let my colleagued listen to some of our politicians. The way they speak is shameful, no articulation, no class, no respect , in this mordern times, Skerrit , Ian and Austrie still speak like back in the 1960’s when we were not so enlightened.
As far as Portsmouth and Ian is concerned, I think it is high time that the Portsmouth people wake up and give the Douglases the door. Enough is enough. There must be some other person who can do better. The whole country is looking at you all as “sheep on a farm.”

No one is forcing people to shop by the Chinese, they choose to buy the rubbish because the rubbish is cheap. A thousand Chinese stores can open, but it takes Dominicans to buy fro buy from them. You should take some time, and educate your fellow Dominicans, on the reasons they should not buy from Chinese.

My fellow Portsmouth residents, are you all not fed up with with Douglas? for he is as bad as Linton. Do you all know the true meaning of name recognition? that is all that Douglas has. The only one who did anything for Portsmouth was Rosie. Ian has done nothing for Portsmouth. All other ministers take care of their constituencies by building better roads. Look at the roads in Portsmouth, it’s only good for goats to walk on. Look at the hospital, when you walk in there for care, there is a good possibility that you will not walk out. Look at the properties which belong to Douglas, they are all dilapidated. Ian is not good for Portsmouth, for he is not even good for himself. You first have to love and take care of yourself in order to be able to love and take care of others. There are three roads in Portsmouth, with only one which is usable. So Ian Douglas you must go and let the residents of Portsmouth vote for someone else.

Shame on the palrep of Portsmouth and the people of Portsmouth it took the united workers party to build the. Michael Douglas Bolivard. In Portsmouth and the Secondary school and the Roads in grand bay and Dominicans work in these project not china man. Come on Dominicans we did not give them a chance to finish and skerrit allow the Chinese to give him a bad deal come on I am not against Chinese but is how you negotiate the other Caribbean countries are doing budiness with the Chinese but is how and what your negotiations are.

    • To Independent Voyer,
We in Portsmouth do not need you symphaty. We will continue to vote Labour and you all will get a heart attack when the seat remain Labour for five more years. The UWP did not build Micheal Douglas boulevard and the Portsmouth Secondary School. It was named Micheal Douglas Boulevard but the highway was already in place. It seems you are not from Portsmouth. We are independent in our thinking and can vote for who we want. Labour Power all the way.

Are politicians really speaking like that in this modern world? Really? That’s what Ian has to say? That demonstrates total lack of intelligence, vision and desire to make an effort on Ian’s part. Ian just leaves the future of his constituency at the mercy of the past electorate. LOL.
By the way Ian, you are not speaking to animals or foolish humans (or maybe you are…) but aren’t you supposed to be a lawyer?

I have no problems with Labour in Portsmouth, I just need the parl rep, whoever that person is, whether, Ian or J.J NOT CABRAL, to get off his butt and start working effectively in the constituency. Thats all I need. Drains, garbage, road repairs, lights in the park, more business places in portsmouth to lessen persons travel to Roseau, etc.

Ian Douglas of Portsmouth and Matthew Walter of Paix-Bouche will go down in history as the two worst Government Ministers that ever served Dominica in any era. No wonder Skerrit treated them both as little boys and you all know the rest. For what they went through from Skerrit If they even had a little bitty of boyishness in them they would have jumped out long time. But because they have no sense of pride and shame, at least to preserve the last names they carry, they have put a huge dent in the political future of their family name. Because of Ian Douglas and Matthew Walter, I can NEVER vote another Douglas or Walter again, no matter what party they going up for. Shame on these guys! Sorry Cabral and the rest of the Douglas family that may still have that political desire in them. Just as I will not vote for another Bush in the USA so to I cannot and will not vote another Douglas or Walter. Those are little boys

Good luck Ian Douglas to keeping Portsmouth the stronghold of a succession of DLP family politicians and constituents.
A politician’s duty is no easy matter. I have noted that through the years some nationals (in Canada where I reside) have become more aggressive and demanding in their expectations of politicians and some without lifting a finger to assist their country/ province except complain and criticize. I have also noted that it is no different in Dominica among some of them. Nevertheless, do your best for your constituents and the town of Portsmouth to make this town a progressive and enjoyable place to reside in.
Elected politicians can do so much. They cannot always please the people and not all of the time. It is no different in other countries. Therefore the people must be broadminded and understanding.
I have known your family since childhood and I always feel dear to them especially your uncle Rosie, departed who will always be missed by all those who knew him; also your aunts, one of whom reside in Ontario. I understood she is now vacationing in D/ca.
Whenever I read about those in politics or who are of a different profession, I do my best to be as fair as possible and to speak the truth.
I wish you success in the next election. The Lord wants good and considerate politicians to serve his people well and also to make Dominica a better, happy, safe and united place to live in as they also serve him through others and their country. Keep up the good work. God bless you!

It is such a shame for someone like you who profess to be a Christian to support such gabbage. These men speaks of the Prime minister like he is God and you support these? They speak like the future belongs to them no regard for God.
In 60 yrs, in 30yrs.they will do this or that.
God in no where in the picture its like God told them life and time belongs to them.
Go on keep on building the GOLDEN CALF of MOUNT HOREB. Remember our God is a JEALOUS GOD.
Simply The Truth you are soo quick to condem others and yet you uphold such blatant CORRUPTION.
Father For The Sake Of Your Son”s SORROWFUL PASSION Have MERCY Upon Us Dominicians And On The Whole World. This Regime is OUT OF CONTROL. PEACE to my fellow Dominicians.

I somewhat agree with Matthew Walter that agriculture is not dead in Dominica. However, it is very safe to say that it is in a coma or lagony and if we have to take another year of the DLP it sure will die and buried. That’s what the outgoing minister has foreseen and is bailout from the ship knowing very well that not only will agriculture die but Dominica on itself will finish and gone goodbye. That’s what makes this election so very important as it is an election between death and life for Dominica and only us, can save our beautiful country from total disaster. So it is not about DLP or UWP but death and life and the choice is ours to vote for the survival of our country and Team Dominica is the ONLY party in this race that offers hope.

Portsmouth people, can you ever remember the last good thing that Douglas has ever done for Portsmouth? Portsmouth, the second town with no roads to walk or drive on, where tourists are scared of coming for there are no security to protect them, where there are more dogs and garbage piling the roads than there are people. Where is Douglas hiding? is he not the one to correct all of those bad things and bring in good things for the people? give Ian Douglas a shovel and have him start cleaning up Portsmouth. For that’s where he belongs.

Like Matthew Walter said of the Paix Bouche constituency, Ian Douglas says the very same thing about Portsmouth. Not one piece of development the man can identify as reasons why Portsmouth people, the second town of Dominica, should vote Labour. They should vote DLP because: according to Ian:
A). Portsmouth belongs to the DLP . By the way they really treating Portsmouth like something they own but does not care about it.
    B) Possie has been voting labour for 60 years. No wonder Portsmouth is so undeveloped and dirty.
C). Will vote DLP for another 60 yrs under Skerrit.
    D) Because Skerrit is young, is not even 50 yrs yet and has another 30 years

Portsmouth people, how much longer can you continue to take this insult? Can you imagine Portsmouth another 30 yrs. under Skerrit

If these are the reasons for voting labour as given by Ian Douglas he must have had one too many drinks. The PM is not yet 50, Portsmouth has voted labour for 60 years… Politicians must graduate their politicking and as the about party says, take it to the next level. The populace is becoming more mature, hopefully, and more intelligent. The populace must be fed with information to grow socially, economically, politically, among other relevant life matters.
