The Dominica State College (DSC) journalism club has apologized to leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, for what it described as a “mix up” during a forum on the economy staged at the college recently.

Members of the club visited the UWP’s office in Roseau on Tuesday to hand deliver the letter of apology to Linton.

The letter apologized for the “mix up which took place with the opening remarks.”

“They basically confirmed in the letter to me that we had agreed, meaning the journalism club and the UWP Team Dominica had agreed that I would make the opening remarks and were expressing regrets that it did not happen as we had agreed,” Linton told Dominica News Online.

In opening remarks at the forum, Linton was chastised by the Dominica Labor Party representative, Dr. Philbert Aaron, who questioned why he “cannot sit here and address a Dominica State College Club.”

According to documents obtained by DNO, the club had initially invited leaders of both parties to address the forum.

In a subsequent correspondence, head of the forum committee, Connel Jno Baptiste wrote to Linton saying “due to the other party sending a representative, we present an alternative where you introduce your main speaker and give a short introduction on your thoughts on the topic, that is if you prefer someone else giving the main speech.”

Under the new arrangement, Linton’s introductory speech would be two minutes long, while the main speech, delivered by a representative, would be 10 to 15 minutes long.

However, when Linton went to address the forum after Aaron’s remarks, he was stopped by moderator, Jaisiah Benoit, who told the audience that only two speakers were permitted to deliver addresses.

“In a forum such as this you have two speakers,” he stated. “Only these two speakers are permitted to speak at the podium. So please understand that it is basic house rules that we are sticking to.”

The club said the mix up was the result of a breakdown of internal communication.

Linton said he has accepted the apology of the club, describing it as “extremely professional and decent,” and noted the UWP has moved on.

“I have the highest regard for that because after all they regretted what happened and they are taking responsibility for it but they wanted to let us know that it was nothing deliberate…” he stated. “There were genuine errors, lack of communication, communication failures here and there but they regretted it and we are moving on from there.”

In order for there to be a debate of the political parties like in the US as all Dominicans seems to want it must be first made law. Therefore the UWP needs to bring this across to Parliament and not just the radio stations as it gets no where. Yes there will be lots of talk about it, but where is it really going? Bring it to the masses and to Parliament to start the preliminary actions the voting process make your case in Parliament if its reject then you have the masses support come elections put it on the front burner….

DNO, Why would the persons who said the acted on behalf of the DSC Journalism Club apologize to one party because of their internal miss communication? Does that mean that the other party new of all the communication including the fact the offended side did not know but they knew?

In any case why did they think that they had to make a delegation to hand deliver the letter to Lennox who just happened to be at the UWP office waiting for the hand delivered letter?

Or could it be that the same pack was in machination with one party to give them the advantage but the house rules did not provide for their scheme?

It is a plan of the UWP that failed

This whole apology thing just made a mockery of the whole exercise. Try again DSC Journalism Club, you just tainted the whole process by playing partisan politics. Do the right be firm be fair. Back to the drawing board. You will eventually get it right.

That hole thing was a set up by the labour party..The knew lennox was to give his remarks but they conveniently avoided that as Skerritt was not man enough to show his presence on the same stage with linton…..so they sent Aron to trap linton hoping that he would hv made a mistake through an outbursts as the labour party keep saying he’s a man with alot off anger..however as I said before things are just not working for the labour party thus far . It appears that all their strategies are failing…..the people are changing and change is now causing great probs, because once it starts it just cannot be stopped. That’s why everything hv it’s time or chance under the sun n when ur time is up then u just cant fight that it’s time for change simple!!!

I would like to commend the DSC journalism club for their forthright show of manliness in apologizing for their slip up. At least they showed the so called mature persons of our blessed country what is expected of the (future of the nation) an that is to accept responsibility for their mistakes. I still feel they should have gone one step farther an condemn the present leadership for showing such disdain an insult to their integrity by not putting in an appearance. The behaviour of their representative at that forum is a clear manifestation that “they all wear their ignorance as a badge of honour.” I am so proud that our young people did not do the same; shame on you the so called intelligencer

  15. April 9, 2014

With all his so called education this is how Mr. Aaron can respond to a simple question? He should be ashamed, lambasting Lennox about his lack of a degree. I will just remind him and all the DLP supporters who have taken up this cause about Lennox’s lack of a degree, look at the man with a PHD no less acting ………. FYI John Major was the Finance Minister and later on became PM of the UK, all he had at the time (during the mid 90’s) was 3 GCE O levels

    • Nomination committe
      April 11, 2014

      Zabocca.John Major had a CV:

“Major left school at the age of 16 in 1959, with three O-levels in History, English Language and English Literature. He later gained three more O-levels by correspondence course, in the British Constitution, Mathematics and Economics. His first job was as a clerk in the insurance brokerage firm Pratt & Sons in 1959. Disliking this job, he quit, and for a time he helped with his father’s garden ornaments business along with his brother, Terry Major-Ball. Major joined the Young Conservatives in Brixton at this time.[6] Major was 19 years old when, in 1962, his father died at the age of 83. His mother died eight years later at the age of 65.[citation needed]

After Major became Prime Minister, it was misreported that he had failed to get a job as a bus conductor because of failing a maths test, when in fact he passed all of the tests, but had been passed over owing to his height.

You cant compare Linton lack of education with John Major. It is naked partisanship to defend Lennox for something that is so glaring. This is why he cannot produce a CV> He never furthered his education.

DNO you continue to show your hopeless journalism skills again, y is it that u always quick to bring out what you think look good where the UWP is concern. You are again bringing out the second part of a story because u believe it will make UWP score points while you never reported on the first part when Mr. Linton acted in the way he did. The point is, Dr. Aaron was not the moderator of the debate he was only representing the Government side and even if he called on Linton, Mr. Linton was totally out of place to walk up to the podium, the only person with the authority to invite Mr. Linton to the podium was the moderator, and even if Mr. Linton was part of the program he would still be out of place to walk up to the podium without and invitation from the moderator. So please Linton don’t pat your self on the back because u receive an apology form the DSC, u also need to apologize to the journalism club of the DSC for your behavior.

    • April 10, 2014

      What fun.

Did the Journalism Team who went to the UWP Office made the contents of the letter of apology known to the media? Did the DLP get one also? They must have known it would make the news. We should have heard about the apology rom them first, it would have had more meaning. But now it raises more questions than answers.

This tells me they should also apologize, to the DLP Representative ,if they have not yet done so; and the UWP should also apologize for the disruption. I mean if any apologies are going it should be to everyone including the listening public.

When I listened to the debate, I realized, the reason the UWP Leader stormed up to the Podium was because the DLP Representative responded to a statement made by the UWP Representative that he did not like? Isn’t that what happened? That is my question at 10:02 AM 10/04/2014.

I mean a coin has two sides. it was supposed to be a debate, where one party responds to what another one says as a means of clarification; and if I seem to be repeating myself here, I apologize; but it is because we fail as we normally do, to listen to and comment on both sides.

The DLP Representative was responding to a statement made by the UWP representative. Wasn’t he? That was all, but his response robbed the UWP Leader the wrong way and he decided to go to the podium. At the wrong time. So what apology was due? Not I hope, for the UWP Leader going to the Podium at the time he did without being invited by the Moderator.

Those wishing to become journalists at the college must learn that a story has at least two sides. Never one.

Why, What, How , When and Where!! basis questions that must always be asked.

Were the invitation to attend the forum sent via letter or was done by word of mouth. If the DSC students want to now come across as professionals there should have been an original letter to the representing parties and once they learned that the PM was not able to attend then another letter of correspondent should have been sent to all parties as to the change in format of the forum. That is not something they should choose to do on the side with Linton without any documentation of the changes. In addition, if that was as the DSC students now claimed was the arrangement why was it only when Aron made the comment of Linton inability to address the students that was the time Linton responded by stepping to the podium at which point he was turned away by the moderator. If there was this so claim arrangement Linton would simply wait until his opportunity to present. This leads me to believe that the DSC have been mislead to come with with such an excuse. Furthermore there was only one representative from each party invited to speak, how can they now claim that Linton give opening address then another UWP member represent UWP on the panel. Give the lack of professionalism with this process this was not an event worth having the present of the PM.

Since Thursday, it has been blows on Mr. Linton. My major concern has been the lack of respect not only to the UWP but to the Students of the College. If Dr. Aaron wanted to perform his Rum Shop behavior, he should not have used the Political Forum to do so. The man is an Ambassador where diplomacy has to be rapped all around you. He was asked a question and his response,” UWP sa marti,” i.e UWP can tell lies. It is said around Dominica that Dr,. Donald Peters is one of Skeritt’s advisors, if that is so, I wondered how embarrassed he felt. I hope Skeritt has learnt a lesson. I wish to suggest, Dr. Aaron should not represent the DLP at any Forum or Debate, the Doctor should be confined to the political platform and nothing else.

I am certain that the UWP left this debate with MANY MANY MANY MANYf eathers in their caps, since Mr Aaron was ill prepared, did not understand the topic, made a mockery of himself, made a mockery of the corrupt Labour party, left a lot of people asking if he really has any darn PHD. If he has any PHD he must tell Dominicans in what, since he seem to be no better than a grade 5 student. He was used by Skerrit to make a Pappy Show of himself, but it speaks volume of the type of people we have governing our affairs, and why this country cannot go anywhere in terms of development. Can you believe a man like Mr Aaron sitting among foreign officials speaking on Dominica’s behalf? OMG!!!!!!!!OH WHAT A SHAME!!!!
THANK YOU LENNOX. YOUR FIGHT IS FOR DOMINICA AND DOMINICANS, AND I AM WITH YOU ALL THE WAY.
    HOW LONG?
    NOT LONG!

  46. For Richer Or Poorer
    April 9, 2014

But did the incident happen at the beginning or had the debate already started. Come on we are adults.

Was the UWP Leader walking up to the Podium, proud and cool as a cucumber but excited at being at that new state of the art College Building (an achievement mind you, of the PM and the DLP Government as the proof of caring for the youths of the country) and about to address the students about why he believes the UWP will be better for their future because he could handle the economy better and was stopped by the moderator?

Is that how it happened? Of course not.

Didn’t the opening remarks already taken place? Therefore there was no reason for him to storm up to the podium at that time, without being called by the moderator because of a remark made by the DLP representative.

That showed very poor judgement. He lost his cool plain and simple and that was a very wrong place for it to happen. That is what his supporters should be telling him.

Irrespective of whether or not he had to address the students and it was maybe not communicated to the moderator, how he did it was wrong.

As a prospective Leader; if the UWP ever becomes the government and he the Prime Minister of the country he will have to make spur of the moment decisions that can affect Dominicans and Dominica. He has to show better judgment. So there is absolutely no excuse or his behaviour.

I cannot believe a man that can dish out so much cannot take a little. He may be vying for the wrong job.

    April 9, 2014

A cap in Linton’s feather indeed. I wonder if Dr. Aaron knew of the arrangement between the Journalism Club and the UWP to allow for an introductory speech by political leader and the main speech by his representative. I wonder too why Team Dominica’s political leader did not elect to make the presentation in cheif and then field questions from the students but chose rather to send a representative even when he was present at the forum? Was it because he wished to avoid any questions from the students about his educational achievements an chose someone else whose educational credentials is beyond reproach? Something to mull on. But I admire he students for their apology, just hoping that it is not another of Team Dominica’s staged political drama to ease the political pressure that has befallen its leader.

“A cap in Linton’s feather indeed. I wonder if Dr. Aaron knew of the arrangement between the Journalism Club and the UWP to allow for an introductory speech by political leader and the main speech by his representative.”…Well in all fairness Mr. Aaron should have been made aware of the arrangement if he was not he needs an apology from the journalism club. My understanding not even the moderator knew of this arrangement. So while we give praises to the journalism club for apologising to the UWP and showing a high level of professionalism, we must also be reminded that there were two parties to this forum and there should not be two different arrangements. All parties should know what the ground rules are from the start in order to avoid confusion. The club should have sent an apology to all parties involved for their failure to properly communicate the required information.

      • Shame on you
        April 10, 2014

I agree. How did lennox he had to make the introductory comments and the other side had no clue? I think this is just showing the biasness of the lecturers in charge of the journalism club. They may have felt that they wronged their party and so is apologizing.

If DSC club wants to hold other debates in the future they have to learn to make it a level playing field. One side came well prepared with powerpoint presentations. Where in the world do politicians debate with their notes in front of them?

Come better than that DSC and that apology is just a strategy and I think it was demanded from you.
