Former government minister brushes aside calls for fresh elections

Former minister Charles Savarin (left) and Ron Green (right)

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – A former senior government minister Tuesday brushed aside calls by the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) for fresh general elections following the December 18 that resulted in a third consecutive victory for the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP).

UWP leader, Ron Green, said that the party’s executive had taken the decision in light of the “fraudulent nature” of last Friday’s general election in which the DLP won 18 of the 21 seats at stake.

Green, one of the casualties of the poll, said that there had been “gross and unprecedented irregularities, fraud and breaches of the laws of Dominica in this general election”.

But former energy minister, Charles Savarin, said the statement by the UWP leader that the party would also be boycotting the new parliament was laughable, given the fact that the December 18 general election had been monitored by the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

He said that the two overseas electoral missions had not found any irregularities and had even made recommendations for strengthening the democratic process.

“Therefore the question as to whether the elections were free and fair and honest…is not for Ron Green to determine or to announce,” Savarin said on the state-owned Dominica Broadcasting Service (DBS).

“It would be for the election observers to make a statement concerning the conduct of the elections and not Mr. Ron Green,” Savarin said, noting that the UWP had been clamouring for the elections and when it was called, was indicating that “the government still had another year to run until December 2010 and (was rushing) to hold elections before Christmas”..

Green said that the UWP would “boycott the parliament” for various reasons including “the unprecedented use of bribery to unlawfully influence the election result” as well as the “the denial of the opposition of access to state owned media which rendered the elections grossly unfair”.

But Savarin said that if the opposition party was serious about boycotting the new parliament, then its three victorious members should resign and allow for by-elections to be held.

“If Ron Green and the United Workers Party really wish not to come to Parliament and really wants an election all they have to do is resign from the three seats that they were elected to and there will be by-elections,” he added.

Last comment. I have heard many criticisms levelled against Dominicans for speaking their minds about their elected leaders. It is the right of every Dominican to criticize his/her elected leaders at will for all their days. And a man elected into office must bear in mind that he is elected into as much criticism as he may receive praise…Infact he should prepare for more criticism and less praise…for it is written ” To whom much is given, much is required and he who receives plenty has much to answer for.”

Still let me urge my people that while you exercise and protect your right, take heed that there is no evil in your speech for some day everyman will be called to give an account of his life..of all his thoughts, his words and his deeds.

If any man does good, let him continue to do good. And those who desires to talk, let them talk. Let everyman’s record speak for itself.

First let me state my position. I am an independent observer and my interest in politics is strictly “what is in the best interest of my people.” I hold no ties or allegiance to any party. My allegiance is to Yahweh and I hold at heart the plight of the people of my country.

One very natural principle held true this election. Three people set the same realistic goal for themselves then prepared a strategy to achieve it. In such a case, “the one who will achieve it is the one who includes sound (true) information from his environment in his strategy.” It is clear that the strategies employed by those who failed to obtain their objectives were lacking sound information about the electorate. This is simply a fact and is not intended to support any party nor to discuss the components of their strategy and what is fair or not fair. In every goal we set for ourselves, this principle holds true.

Here is my comment on fairness:

Any practice deemed unfair during the December 18th, 2009 General Elections will have been unfair at every occurence including this one. Therefore the oppositions must examine their records to see if they employed the same unfair practices during their time.

The debate that would be of interest to me and of value to my people at this juncture would be to have these political parties list their activities in trying to entice the electorate to vote them in (both past and present practices) so we can discuss them one by one. The list can look like this

    Action; Import Voters Fair (yes/no)

Practiced by: Party 1 (yes), Party2 (yes) Party3 (no)

Action: Payouts to voters Fair (yes/no)

Practiced by: Party 1 (yes), Party2 (yes) Party3 (no)

That would be such a lovely and valuable debate as long as it is based on truthful disclosures by all sides.

Why does the opposition says that Dominica is a one party state? People voted secretly and DLP won 18 and UWP won ? What’s the beef? UWP representatives get the ball rolling . Find youselves in parliment., press for electoral reform .We do need it. Ackownledge that Your party lost just like labor and Freedom lost in to you in 1995. Those issues that you raised wer valid but they were there then in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995. You choose to do nothing about it then. Now together with DLP and the general public we the Dominican public want your input in implementing reform. Your failure to go to parliment will mean the end of UWP.

i’m didnt vote of the DLP and now its time to move on Mr. Green. its the same reason why so many UWPites didnt turn out to vote. dey are dissatified with ur trend of politics and would rather stay home dan vote the DLP>

but trust me if u continue like dat there’s no more hope. The Late Mike Douglas stood up as a man and walked proudly into parliament as the opposition leader when the late Dame Eugenia Charles gave him a pounding of 19 seats in da election.

Well a reminder to you Mr. Green, if u boycot the parliament it would not be any thing new. u did so about …imes this year and the UWP supporters stayed without no representation. so i believe its time to get urself familiarized with the news. U lost to Mr. St.Jean.

what baffles me is dat the same electoral system who gave u wiin on friday night when u were celebrating, u had no problem with it knowing that the next day would have the final count. come saturday u LOST …in da electoral system and now wants to take dem to court. my neice is 8yrs. and would behave that same way if she was in any competition with someone.

Workers still crying bobol. When will you all realise that this strategy will not work. Focus on issues of employement cost of living and economic development. That is what people interested in hearing about. If Skerit bobol and he have villas or he voleh elections then take him to task. Calling on radio and running your mouth does not fix anything. Tell us the way to take Dominica to higher heights and forget about skerrit and bobol. Go to the ipo. In the meantime tell us how to create jobs lower cost of living and make the country a better place. If you present a proper plan of action the people wil rallly behind you.

Because we neeed jobs and we need reduction of taxes and govt levies to see our way. When you all come to me with a sensible plan to put money in moy pocket then we can talk. Thats what I need to hear. I could care less about skerrit house and his women and his land. Tell me about Developmen.

the elections have come and gone. why should we be trying to bring down one another? mr.green should now put politics aside and put people first.. there is no need for a fresh election. if we are to have fresh elections then there will be no christmas in Dominica. the elections were fair, there is one party to win and one to loose. mr.green be a man for the people like Roosevelt Skerrit and help brung our country foward.

    CONCERNED!

  13. Ibn Gabrioli
    December 23, 2009

These pronouncements by Mr. Green begs alot about his stewardship of the once dominant and progressive force for politics and governance in our country. I cannot believe the delusion by an otherwise wise and moderate man. What’s gotten into him?

Most of what I am thinking about the stance of the UWP executive has already been voiced up above. But alas, the tactics have been exploited by the same men to no avail. Correction, to the effective demise of the Party.

Stop deluding yourselves Mr. green and company. Get on with the people’s business.

Given the drubbing of the UWP by the Labor Party, what is clear is that the Party, for it to be viable again, needs a new injection of values, vision and vitality. It needs to reassess itself in light of the new dispensation unfolding in our country. What with the fastest pace of infrastructural development this land has ever seen, the recasting of our new international alliances, the renewed vigor of a political directorate (Labor) who is energized, healthy and determined – notwithstanding – to plow ahead with its vision for moving the country.

If the UWP were to be taken seriously again , Mr. Ron et al should immediately cease their bellyaching and embark on the kind deep analysis, post mortem and reassessment as to how and why they lost the election and lost so badly.

And then begin the rebuilding process. Now!

Boycotting the House is an old, tired ruse that has not worked to date. No one takes a party seriously who abdicates its duty to represent even the minority who elected you, not matter whether or not you command and control the reigns of power.

Mr. Green, you and your elected member still have a moral and legal duty to represent your constituents. More importantly, it your responsibility to faithfully carry out your constitutional duty.

    December 23, 2009

Wow. I prayed for acceptance of the results…. guess it will come soon. But anyway, I feel for Mr. Green but the way he is going on about it is the wrong way. Elections were as free and fair as daylight in Dominica. Green will have to look at the deficiencies in his party..because having so many less votes this term is frightening. This is a great indictment on the party… so instead of whining and crying now.. the party will need to plan… have a new strategy that will work…unlike the two other terms when they had the same strategy of attacking Skerrit…it does not work. Get some new blood.. and start working now.

For Mr. Green, the most I can advise is to go to court .. not crying the entire election was a fraud (’cause you will lose big time on that) but challenging the La Plaine Seat on the outpour of diaspora voters. But thinking now.. that may be a hard case to win but trust me.. dont be a fool to say, the entire election was fraud. Cause DLP would would have had to bribe sooo many people.. to get more that 22 thousands votes. And if it is not illegal for people who live overseas (not more than five years without visiting) to come to vote then I dont see how that case will be won, because surely these people will not say they were bribed. I dont even think the politicians will use bribes either… some of them too smart for that. A bribe is when there is a consideration… I would like to believe that more than 97% of the people who came down on the chatered planes were already DLP supporters so they would not have been bribed to vote DLP. They got tickets yes… but this is just a way for DLP to transport their supporters. If I were a politican and I knew I have 20 die hard supporters in New York and I had the means of transporting them to come and vote for me.. I would do it. Accepting transportation is not a bribe… UWP will have to show direct bribery.. which may prove to be difficult.

BUt Ron.. do your thing. Go to court.. dont just cry die.. and die. Fight… but you also need to know when you have to put down your sword eh… dont be fighting the air and beating yourself up to death. Learn from ….earlier mistakes. UWP to take out Skerrit and I say Skerrit.. (becuase he is the DLP’s hope and stay at the moment.) you would need some new things. The Man is liked.. he is a celebrity, a star, he is the people’s darling, the people love him. I dont know what to advise except look for fresh blood and start working now… the most the court can award you is a by-elections in maybe (tops) two constituencies. Still cant win on that… the people have spoken. So … just rebuild… there is still much support out there…. try to win back those you lost and gain some more. And dont sit and sulk.. nobody likes a sorry loser. Nobody,.

He is a young man he won he seat he is entitled to represent the people or being the next opposition leader. Give Spraggs a chance in the house and go to the HOuse.

The opposition party wanted the government to call election, that was granted; yet they complain. The opposition party wanted observers for the election, same was granted, yet they said that these observers were paid by the government.
After the election, the overseas observers gave their comments, saying that the election was conducted okay and that if individuals had any problems concerning the election, they should go to court with proofs; the opposition still complain.
Now they decide to boycott the parliamentary sitting. Are they trying to prove something? What about the individuals that voted for them during the election, don’t they have a say? Gentlemen if you all have concerns, take them to court and let the court decide. I do hope that you will accept the decision of the court.

for the last 15 years (3 general elections) the labour party has won the United workers party.
at the end of every election, i notice that the united workers party always claim that the elections were not fair.

its interesting that they haven’t put things/people/devices in place to catch the people who cheat.

i mean if i had a business, and every year on the day of Christmas eve, my business would get robbed, then i would be waiting inside or would perhaps hire someone to wait one christmas to catch the thief.

it is POOR STEWARDSHIP to allow the thief to come in every year and get away. (i mean i know when he is coming,)

and it is even more shameful to even report it to the authorities.

This can only be described as Poor Stewardship.

Isn’t it funny and bordering on ignorance the statement made by the past UWP Opposition Laeder, stating that his party intend to boycot parliament.

According to this article, “Green, one of the casualties of the poll, said that there had been “gross and unprecedented irregularities, fraud and breaches of the laws of Dominica in this general election”.

Itshould be obvious, therefore to anyone, that Green and the UWP are still in a state of denial, and cannot accept the results and the people’s decision. They obviously have not learnt anything from their failures and pronouncement regarding corruption.

Prime Minister Skerrit was judge by the Dominican electorate in relation to corruption allegations levelled at him, the electorate gave their result, it therefore stands to reason that Ron Green is so dissatisfied that he intends singing the same tune, which the elctorate will use to throw out the remaining three members of the UWP who won their seats.

It is so sad once age to see this uncomfortable syndrome back in this beautiful island of ours. LOPS
Lose Of Power Syndrome and it is only affecting the ones who have discovered it. Dame Eugenia is not here to say how she was cured because it was the same UWP candidates that had diagnosed her. Sorry Ron Green. See you in 2019.

Ron needs to be quiet. Accept defeat with grace. Right now the world just laughing at you. Go back re-strategize and come with a new plan for 2015. I have already heard some of your POTO-supports give you 3 strikes and out. So you have more work to win over those who have given up faith in the leadership of the party. All three of y’all, two of whom lost y’all seats.

Mr Charles Saverin, you seem to be taking over Mr Anthony Astaphan ‘s role as spokesperson to Prime Minister Skeritt. Thanks for executing the power that has been bestowed upon you, but that power will be shortlived!

We support the UWP 100% for boycotting Parliament! Was it not what Mr Roosevelt Skeritt aimed for based on his actions during the election process, the creation of a one party state?

    Goodbye Democracy!
    Welcome Dictatorship!

    Good Luck!

The assesment from the overseas electoral missions appeared not to be impartial. Who were they working for? Who escorted them around? What was their method of observation? How long did they observe the electorial process?

The report by the election observers was not a true picture of what transpired during the election process – There are many aspectsof an election process, not just observing that the electorates are well behaved at the polling stations.

The constituents in Marigot, Salisbury and Roseau Central do not want any by-election. We are supporting the opposition 100%. We are fully cognizant of all the blatant irregularities that were exhibited during the elections and we are standing by Edison James, Norris Prevost, and Hector ‘Spags’ John.

Well said, call by-elections in all three and there will be 21-0, that is what they want. these men are not interested in representing those who elected them. they are just a bunch of greedy hateful men who are power hungry. But Dominicans are sensible people, they have been rejected to the political bobol garbage bin, never to get power in Dominica.

The elected PM is likely to rule for the next 20 years, by then ron, eddie and prevost will disappear from dominican politics

Ron, no parliament, no salary. Can you handle that? You need to resign and get out of politics since your lazy attitude seem to be detrimental to your party.
