George not bothered by critics

MP-Elect Ambrose George

Parliamentary representative-elect of the Roseau South constituency Ambrose George has made it clear that he is not bothered by critics of his past stints as member of Cabinet.

“I am not bothered by the critics; as you realise I don’t normally respond to such criticism because really and truly most of the stuff that they speak to doesn’t make sense…I suppose they have their work to do … they try to bring me down but it only strengthens me; it strengthens my constituency and the people react by showing their support for me,” George told a Dominica News Online reporter following Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s swearing-in at Morne Bruce Monday morning.

George won Friday’s general elections on a Labour Party ticket by a vast majority. His seat was challenged by Bobby Frederick of the United Workers Party and Oliver St. John of the Dominica Freedom Party.

According to George, this is a “tremendous feat” and an indication of his constituents’ trust in him.

George, former minister of Public Works and Infrastructural Development, in the Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration was fired in November 2008.

In a statement on state radio that month, where he announced a cabinet reshuffle, Skerrit had also thanked George for his services to the state.

George was initially sacked by deceased Prime Minister Pierre Charles in 2002 following serious allegations of money laundering attempts.

During a trip to the Unites States FBI agents in Puerto Rico, arrested George’s travelling companion Julian Giraud on money laundering charges. While George was vindicated and not charged, Giraud was convicted in a Miami court and sentenced to prison.

After Prime Minister Skerrit took up office, he recalled George giving him a ministerial position in Cabinet. However, George again became embroiled in allegations which indicated that he was requesting payment of thousands of US dollars in attempts to set up an offshore bank here.  According to reports, Government revoked the license of the bank. Another allegation was that  George may have signed the approval of the license for that bank during a period as acting prime minister.

Opposition supporters heavily criticised Skerrit’s move to allow George to contest the general elections after being axed and embroiled in alleged impropriety.

However, George said the people have sent out a message to critics by giving him a mandate to represent them.

“Well again the critics have been proven wrong, the people have spoken again. The same thing was done in 2005; this time around again the people have spoken. So really and truly whatever the criticisms are vented by the opposition because they are the ones doing that, are not bothering the constituency… I still have their trust and they’re satisfied with the level of representation I have been giving them over the years. I mean this is my third term in office and after two terms if things were that bad then certainly I would not have been voted in anyway. I was voted in overwhelmingly by 2049 winning my opponent by 911 votes,” he noted.

Meanwhile his plans for the Roseau South constituency are expected to bring a certain level of development between people and the constituency, according to him.

George outlined the construction of a resource centre in Kingshill, a new health centre for Newtown, construction of the Newtown Primary school among those projects. He noted thatfoundation works for the primary school had commenced.

“The redevelopment of several roads in that constituency, particularly Giraudel and Eggleston as well as Castle Comfort and Wall House, and Leopold Ville; we have a very important feature in Giraudel which is the Giraudel Flower Show. We have started the construction of a new facility, a permanent facility for that area to host the flower show and it is our intention to continue with that project,” he explained.

It is his hope that the Giraudel/Eggleston community will host its flower show at the proposed facility in 2010.

To “Chica”….he looks tired and fatigued because he is an early riser, hard worker, and late sleeper…maybe you should try it sometime….put others and country before yourself because that is the foundation and principle on which Real Labourites live their lives.

It is amazing how people absorb and believe everything they hear with no physical evidence to back their accusations. The FBI arrested Julian Giraud, not Ambrose George. So many mothers accept gifts from their sons who go to Guadeloupe and St. Marteen backdoor to do their dirty deeds and I have never heard of them being arrested when their sons were. So if we are guilty by association, do you want the laws to be amended as such? To reflect that people who are friends with others who break the law should be investigated, arrested, questioned, prosecuted and sentenced accordingly??? It is high time that you people stop wildly accusing people because many of you do not like it when your names are being mentioned in roadside gossip. Why you pointing fingers when someone else is judging you? If Ambrose is guilty of anything, let his God deal with him. The PM proved that even though he was being accused of wrongdoing, Dominicans will still vote him, so live and let live. You so-called voices of reason need to go do something more constructive with your lives. Ambrose George sure is….and will continue to do so till the day he dies!!!

In any other country ambrose would have been forced to resign but in Dominica it is different. God Bless said that if God is for you who can be against you, I guess Hitler, Mugabe and Sadam must have felt the same way. Be careful what you say

If he is made a minister then it is a poor reflection of the government. He is not worthy. He is an embarassment to the government and to Dominica.

Congratulations to Ambrose George for winning his seat. Having been sacked from the cabinet on 2 previous occassions for behavior unbecoming of a cabinet minister, he has proven that he isdefinitely not cabinet material. He should expect no more than the opportunity to serve his constituency from the back seat. Good luck.

It is writ large that this man disdains the good nature of honesty. I’ve always place skepticism on his integrity in office. I just have a hard sensation that he does business under the table( underhandedness). He never struck me as the sincere and candid sort.

Shameless, it is not you, it is a matter of the choices presented to them. Only time will tell on your development plans. There was nothing done for 2 terms, what make you think you will do anything in your third?. You will just be trying to make sure your fatten your pockets this time around before it is all gone. Warning to you domincans, you do not put hungry, poor and the uneducated to run your country.
