The Government of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has proposed Speaker of the House, Alix Boyd-Knights as its nominee for President of Dominica.
The term of the current president, Eluid Williams, expires in October and the search is now on for someone to replace him.
He was elected to complete the term of former president, Nicholas Liverpool.
DNO can confirm that at a meeting with opposition leader, Hector John, on September 2, Skerrit made known his choice but this was not accepted by John.
When contacted on the matter, John declined to comment saying only, “I have to discuss the matter with my colleagues.”
Knights for president? well every day is going to turn dark for those who stand for truth righteousness and justice, Skerite should be ashamed of him self, is now the rest of the world going to laugh at us.

The petition should ask the Labour Party candidates to oppose this suggestion and if skerritt fails to withdraw this proposed nomination, then they should return to the people to determine what the next step should be.

The selection of Speaker is really the choice of the Government side and the Opposition always feels that the Speakers is ‘Biased’ towards the ruling party. Would anyone be supprised if he/she was.
Same with the Presidency.
I have not known any Speaker or President who has been accused of being biased towards the opposition. Clearly this would be seeking a way out of the job.
So Ms Knight being ‘Biased’ is not really a disqualifier.
In fact, having served so many years as Speaker of the House, can be considered a major qualifying factor for the position of President of Dominica.
I have always contended that years of service in the public service or any job for that matter, does not automatically translate to experience which counts. If anything her years of service could be considered a major disqualifying factor. She has proven he inability to serve and a total lack of basic legal reasoning.

I agree…. I think this proposal is a joke. The government MUST know that the opposition could never accept Mrs. Boyd-Knights as Head of State. The position warrants someone who is seen as being unpartisan, fair, balanced, and a STATES-MAN / WOMAN. Mrs. Boyds-Knight, with all due respect, does not fit that bill.

But on another note, is the nomination of Alix sufficient proof that Eluid Williams did not impress the ruling party? Which one of our past presidents would allow the PM to declare that the people of Dominica are too free
Which one of our past president would allow a member of Parliament who is suppose to be contributing on the budget presentation to rant about his jungle training in Guyana and to mepwisay someone fro his own party who has challenged him.
Without referencing the constitutional requirements for the President of Dominica – I always saw the president as a person with grace, humility. Someone who can reach out to even his adversaries, someone who can bridge differences and someone willing to do what it takes to unite the people just by giving this presidential speech on DBS.

Well Jimi Hendrix, you say that the position of President is ceremonial in nature! Well it is seen to be ceremonial because we do not hear much from the President (WHO IS OUR HEAD OF STATE BY THE WAY), as the head of the country’s government is the person who is ‘up front and personal’. But really, the position of President is more important as he is the Head of State and is in office on a daily basis doing the work on behalf of the state. He has to sign off many official documents including state laws, which come into effect only with his signature of approval! He is the protector of our constitution and is meant to supervise the way in which the country is run in order to ensure compliance with our constitution and adherence to rule of law. That is where our last President failed us as he allowed for the constitution to be trampled on in order to have him removed and said nothing in its defence! The man who has replaced him has therefore been able to hold the position illegally until now unchallenged by anyone will the power to ensure compliance with the law as it stands. If Madame speaker is moved to the position of President, I am confident that laws will be changed and signed off by her in order to facilitate the continuance of Skerritt in office indefinitely!! Look at the examples in Venezuela where the laws were changed in order to facilitate Chavez serving more time as President than was allowed by law prior to the changes which were made. They were made in order to keep him in office by persons who were supportive of him from within the government. Even the Supreme Court decisions before his death which were made in respect of his ability to hold the office of President despite the fact that he was not well enough to be present at the inauguration on the day specified by the constitution, WHERE QUESTIONED IN TERMS OF THEIR LEGALITY. IT WAS SAID THAT THEY WERE HIS SUPPORTERS AND SO FOUND IN HIS FAVOUR. So we have the precedent there by those whose model of governance Skerritt is copying….wake up folks!! Skerritt thinks that we are too free………hmmmmmmmmmmm
