Govt’s performance in Kalinago Territory to be scrutinized tonight

Minister Ashton Graneau

The government’s performance in the Kalinago Territory is expected to be placed under the microscope when the 7th People’s Parliament gets underway there tonight.

“We will do an assessment of the then years of the Dominica Labour Party role in the Kalinago Territory, what they have achieved and what they have failed to deliver on,” he said.

Sanford said the performance of the incumbent Parliamentary Representative Ashton Graneau will also be scrutinized.

“We need to look at what he has done for the year and what are some of the things that we need him to look at,” Sanford said.

The United Workers Party, he said, will also look at their plans for that community “as well as the projects that were rejected by the DLP”.

According to Sanford, little attention has been placed on the craft industry in the Kalinago Territory and that too well be addressed.

The only real development happened under the U.W.P and Mr.Francois Barrie, the Kalinago model village, pipe borne water, upgrade of the Atkinson and jolly john playing field.During this short stint of real representation,a glimmer of hope began to appear,as for now,we are being neglected, and mislead by the most lazy government we have seen.we have some many intellectuals, who have refuse to return to the territory because, its a wasteland, where only the strong can survive, long live the KALINAGO NATION !

I wonder if some people really read what they say, i wonder if people really believe in God the creator when they go to church on Sundays. If we cannot make it right with people we cannot make it right with God and its time we ask each other’s forgiveness. Remember folks that there are other people reading DNO who are not Dominicans. Dominica is poor and the scarce resources we have we cannot give everybody. Its either we invest in big capital investments or we give everybody a piece of the cake. The political partyies have no difference ideologically except emotional. We need a peace rally for the political parties. we need to move on, this constant fight is not doing our country any good. and finally remember we cannot get away from God even if we think we fool the people. Its time to get it right with people and forgive the wrongs and let God deal with it. We simply need to come together to make our island the nature isle of the caribbean.

The supposedly discoverers of Dominica have fed us with a bunch of lies. The greedy bastards came to claim what they did not work for. They enslaved and worked the Awrawaks to death. Obviously the Caribs could not allow them to do the same to them, so they resisted, What came out of that, they were branded canibals and savages. We always know Caribs are very shy, but hard working people, I guess it comes from their lack of trust of the other people who always ill-treated them. Dominicans always refer to shy people as “kwayib”, Some people behave as if politics just started 10 years ago. What happened before the year 2000? Who did anything for the caribs? If the others were so good, why wasn’t their standard of living elevated?

Check the history of the north american indians. When the europeans came the wickedness the did to them, after taking their land and way of life. They are the poorest people in the u.s.a on a reserve in a forgotten area of this thriving nation.

That is what happened in Dominica when they took roseau from the caribs. Where was Skerrit when all this was taking place? These people have always been a forgotten group so stop politiking everything and advise them how to empower themselves and better their living cnditions.

For years, I have been buying craft from the Carib area and send to my many friends overseas, lately, the things that I see mostly on offer is craft from China with Dominica slapped all over them, at the bottom, made in China.
I ask you. What has happened to the once beautiful Carib craft? Why, if the China craft has a better finishing touch can the powers that be not ask China to teach the fine art in the territory instead of letting it die only to sell those belonging to China.
If we continue this way, Dog will soon be on many restaurant menus here.
    Watch it.

Lets get this straight. Kalinago weren’t the first. Arawaks were the first and were brutally killed by the caribs.

Secondly, this is 2011. There are about 75,000 Dominicans and many of them poor. Go tarish pit, Fond Cole, in the middle Roseau etc and see all those hungry balck people there that need special treatment. Thos caribs need to use their skills and create money for their community.

There isn’t anything special or different between they and the hardworking poor black people in DA. Oh yeah now I can think of a difference. The black people in DA have been building this country up for years first with the banana industry. Black people in DA have bring this country from nothing to something. Dominica can now boast thats its the nature island because black people who were onced brutally enslaved helped bring it to where it is today. Why do blacks in DA continue to make Carib people think they protect Dominica is baffling to me.

Lastly, haven’t noticed that races or ethnicities who want special treatment seem to be keeping their ownselves back? If you say you are hardworking and equal to your fellow citizens then work like them. Don’t beg for special treatment. This is 2011 all this rubbish is redundant. Work hard Play hard and stop begging for handouts!

partly true, but i donot think we should try to belittle them. To date, they are the most historical part of Dominica’s history, because the Artawacs are no more. They are what we have like it or not.

My paternal grandmother is carib. I have nothing aganist Caribs. I saw my grandmother get her butt out of the reserve and make something of her self. As she always say, ain’t nobody going to make her settle on some “piece of acre” when she deserved more. History is there to tell the story of her ancestors. But we live for today and we can only fix today! American Indians are poor and their stories are similar because they stayed on the pieces of acre called a reservation that the white man men forced them on. They forget Carib people and the only way to remind them is to walk amongst them! Don’t settle if you deserve more! Don’t wait for the majority population to give you! Most likely they won’t and they are quite happy that you decide to stay on the “piece of acre” they forced you on.

I stand by that so next DNO article please !!!

    January 27, 2011

KALINAGO brothers and sisters are the FIRST People in Dominica. They fought bitter struggles against the colonialists who tried to decimate them. They tried to destroy their way of life in all aspects. The missionaries came, handed them bibles, introduced them to Christianity, while at the same time they took their land, sided with the colonialists and aided and abetted numerous atrocities committed against the entire Kalinago people. History is replete with the abominable crimes done to those brave warriors.

Because of Dominica’s ruggedness and favourable terrain, Kalinago resisted, living off the fertile land. They were a peaceful people and still are. They consistently fought for their RIGHTS as a people who discovered Dominica. They fought side by side with the ‘NEGRE MAWONS’ our black brothers and sisters. They taught them how to fight against and resist the greedy, murderous Slave Masters.

Dominica could now boast of ‘Dominica, the Nature Isle’ because of their love, protection and conservation of their environment. Kalinago were truly NATURALISTS. How comes today, Kalinago people are one of the POOREST communities in Dominica? WHY? WHY? WE should show more gratitude and respect for our FIRST PEOPLE. They DESERVE IT.

Frankly, Govt.needs to do much more for the sustainable development of Kalinago. Govt.s incompetence has caused Kalinago to be more and more dependent on ‘HANDOUTS. Kalinago Territory was once a vibrant agricultural community, now farmers are bawling. Absolutely NOTHING significant has been done to boost up agriculture, our the Craft Industry and to lift the standard of living of those proud, hard-working people.

While those politicians presently in Govt., while Skerritt and others have amassed massive wealth quickly while in Public Office and through dubious means, an entire Kalinago community becomes POORER and POORER day by day. What has happened to Kalinago beautiful arts and craft works? What has happened to Agriculture in that area? .Dominicans please TREAT KALINAGO better than that PLEASESEEEEEE. Govt. has failed our First People miserably. Stop abandoning the DISCOVERERS of our Land. They are PEOPLE TOO.

It have poor people in newtown, roseau, coulibistrie, st.joe, wesley, possie, soufriere and scotts head, , grandbay. I could go o but I guess my point is you should be fighting to uplift every Dominican not one set. The govt hasn’t only forgotten Caribs (I question that) but have forgotten the mass population of Dominicans. Many who are poor. It bugs me that in this Day people still encouraging people to get handouts. Everyday some race attacks black people and tell them work stop wanting people to give you things. For years Black people work and build this country. It really bugs me when people like you come on here acting like one race should get special treatment because they came here SECOND! Arawaks weren’t treated nicely by the caribs. The Caribs are skilled at crafts. These people should have more than one representative who go and network intelligently with the right people to get their products elsewhere for sale. I go to places like target, walmart, in the airport duty free shops, malls, bed, bath & beyond etc here in the states and see low quality baskets, straw hats and other goods that the caribs can make. I’m not saying they will be able to supply thousands of stores with these products but I believe with the right carib person not sitting down there waiting for handout they can network, create, market and sell their crafts easily for a profit to the right retailer for the right price.

If the Carib people are fighting for education I support them. If the carib people don’t have a primary school and high school available to them I support them in getting this done. If they aren’t being accepted into the State College because they Carib and the carib protests I support those caribs. But anything other than that is a hand out! We should work hard for what we want. There black citizens poor as well. Black people didn’t ask to come to the west. You think black people were on a cruise or something and just ended up here? You talk about the caribs defending dominica like black people hard a chance to do it at that time and didn’t.

You said it yourself “because of the ruggedness and terrain” helped keep Dominica away form columbus. So all this hype right now about the caribs doing this and that doesn’t make no sense because the land of Dominica was essentially what assisted both caribs and blacks.

The next time you commenting why don’t you use black people and not “negre mawons” ?!!! Work hard no bloody handouts!!!!!!

        January 27, 2011

I strongly agree with you Aaaaaa. We all hold Dominican passports and all should be treated as equals. The law is for everyone. It is time for some of our Kalinago people to realise and understand this. No special treatment! If a black Dominican cannot settle in Kalinago Reserve, then Kalingoes should not be allowed to settle anywhere else in Dominica except Kalinago Reserve. This is pure segregation and racism, some of them need to stop this nonsense. I’m a black man and my wife is a Kalingo woman and our child of course is mixed. I pray the day he is educated, he will put some of these racists in their place God’s willing.

All Dominicans involved despite their religion, race or background must work together to eradicate ills from each societies and stop the psychobabbles. Kalinago discovered Dominica FIRST what!

        January 27, 2011

The People’s Parliament will be held in Kalinago territory as the article mentioned. That is why the comments and emphasis was on kalinago. The attempt was not to discriminate or forget the history, the struggles of Black people. The focus was in relation to what happened, what is or is not happening and what could be done to enhance kalinago like putting more into the agriculture and craft industries. You all totally misunderstood the essence of the comments. Were it not the same colonialists who wrote the story about Kalinago being cannibals, eating human beings and they were the cause of the plight of the Arawaks? Relax and take time to read and understand the written word before pouncing with useless enraged emotions. Nowhere in the comments that mention was made of giving kalinago special treatment? So why the confusion and misrepresentation?
