Green congratulates colleagues, says UWP will return to Parliament

Ron Green

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Ron Green has congratulated the two members of his party who were victorious at the July 9 bi-elections.

Edison James and Hector John of the Marigot and Salisbury constituencies, respectively, both retained their seats after they were made vacant for missing three consecutive sittings of Parliament.

“The people are saying that the issue of democracy should not be pushed aside and that is what Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has been doing. He has been trying to avoid the issue of electoral reform,” Green said.

He noted that the recently elected members will return to Parliament. He said the UWP awaits the intentions of the prime minister in that regard.

    @One Love:

I have not seen the increased majority you are talking about. Less persons voted for each party and especially in Marigot. Look at the results objectively. Maybe Labourites decided not to vote because it would make no difference while some of the UWP supporters are not in favour of the boycot and so decided not to vote. Or it could also mean that both parties brought persons down from the diaspora to vote in December.

So I would be concerned if I was the UWP.

UWP, Labour, DFP, VFP, VVP, UUP…..Unreal!!! Our political leadershsip and system is in such disarray…The speaker of the house, the PM, the opposition…Leadership is fractured and disjointed; and the citizens are left quarreling amongst themselves regarding the state of the country. How do you hold leadership accountable? It is definitely not by playing political analyst an and advisor on DNO. Ok! Let us really look at what is happening here: Fractured leadership (both UWP and Labour), crime is on the rise, drug dealers are running rampant, universal education is in pergatory, our youth are yearing for guidance, the cost of living is sky-rocketing, a box of cereal cost a zillion dollars, high unemployment, etc, etc…And we are here on DNO throwing trash at each other…When are we going to learn? We will go to sleep tonight, and wake up tomorrow with the same issues. You guys need to stop…

BRAVE PATRIOTIC DOMINICANS HAVE OVERWHELMINGLY DEFEATED THE PRIME MINISTER’S PLANS TO ESTABLISH A ONE-PARTY STATE WITH HIMSELF AS DOMINICA’S FIRST DICTATOR.

On Friday July 9th 2010; the people of Salisbury and Marigot put COUNTRY BEFORE SELF and handed the Skerrit led government a resounding defeat at polls in those two constituencies. Candidates of opposition United Workers Party who had previously been technically denied access to the Parliament by the Speaker of the House; were returned with extended majorities of not less than 300 votes and in one case over 500.

One government supporter was reported to have confirmed that the election was unfair as it had been rigged by the opposition. According to her the opposition UWP had corrupted the process and cheated the DLP out of what should have been a sure victory: A prominent senior counsel is said to be reviewing the matter before filing election petitions at the High Court in Roseau

    July 10, 2010

Well the results are no surprise to anyone. Marigot was always as safe as houses, and so was Salisbury, however Skerrit won because the democracy of Dominica and the legality of the government have been acknowledge. Green is now saying he awaits the Prime mInister intention on the matter, i dont understand, the people chose them they must attend the house. If they rfused to attend, the laws of dominica can be changed to meet that problem, if people do not want to be in parliament then they must not stand for election, they are wasting the people time and the treasury resources, playing childish games. The governing of the country is important, and the opposition have to treat it as such.
Now if the UWP have no money to pay their Trinidadian lawyers, they should consider droping all there time wasting cases. Dominica have no money to give no Tricki-dadian lawyer. Maybe the UWP supporters will make a collection in Laplain to pay the lawyer fees.
It is time we behave as a true democracy, you lost, you are now in opposition, now attend the house to earn your salary.
Work on reforming your party, analyse why you are losing popularity with the people. Some supporters are doing you more harm than good, harness them ,u know who they are.

Bye Elections could not be called in the whole country, Please find the Dominica Consitution and get someone to assist you in understanding,

Yes the people of Marigot and Salisbury showed Dominicans that they are in support of their leaders the men they choose to represent them. They did not go to parliament in order to demonstrate their unhappiness with what is happening in Dominica and this bi-election proves that the people they represent supports their move.

SO who is Alix or Skerrit to demand otherwise.

Yes if not for the expense of another bi-election I would say .Boycott again.. ..lets see them call another election and then blame workers for causing them to spend Dominicans money.
Because like spoil t children they did not get their way….even if they have eighteen sits they still so power hungry.

I am at lost to understand why a labourite would call the people of Marigot and Salisbury stupid for sticking to thier party. When the freedom party won by a landslide the people of Portsmouth and Grandbay must have been called fools then or i guess were cosider fools for sticking with labour. But then again maybe the people throwing insults now might have voted freedom and called the laborites who they now support fools or they were just to young and now dont know there own history, poor them. In dominica it seems if u dont have my view u are a stupid person, funny, is that itself dumb since we suppose to agree to disagree but then only the smart people can do that.

The Treasury of the Government of Dominica was the big loser in this election because it had to meet the cost of organizing this election which wouldn’t have been necessary had it not been for the silly behaviour of the UWP. So what was all the force about for all these months??? They finally realize that they have to go to Parliament. I can understand that they may have had grievances but let the courts deal with the matter and go represent the interest of your constituents and rebuild your party after such a massive defeat , go back to the drawing board and do your homework as the youth leader of the UWP rightly suggested. I wonder why is Ron Green still the leader of the party, why do these people persist to live in denial?? The electorate gave the man a big vote of no confidence yet he is untouched as leader of the party and they want to preach democracy!!! The UWP is in need of new leadership and they need to change their strategy to regain some measure of credibility. Dominica is in need of a credible opposition!!!

Labour nvr even went all out with a campaign, not a single major rally where they mobilized island-wide supporters to flood one of the constituencies.

For y’all to be so excited is like Kobe being excited to win a regular season game. Or Serena Williams excited to win a first-round match in some obscure tennis tournament. Or Denzel excited to get a role in some straight-to-dvd movie.

@Engras: The “People’s Parliament” was a monumental failure. It represented only the UWP and a few disgruntled voters, not the majority of Dominicans. It represented maybe 0000.1% of the entire population of Dominica, and that is being generous. From the very beginning the organizers knew it was going nowhere. There was nothing new discussed at these meetings, just the regurgitating of the same things heard during the general election. There were no new ideas on how to move the nation forward. It was kind of sad to see a few tired, old power hungry men spitting out hot air.

Now the UWP has seen declining popularity among the general voting population of Dominica since it won the 1995 general elections. Lets take a look at the facts. In the 1995 elections the UWP won by 11 seats. Not a big majority but a win nonetheless. In the 2000 elections they lost two seat winning 9. In the 2005 elections they lost an additional seat winning only 8. Then Timothy crossed the floor reducing the party to 7 seats. In the 2009 election the party won only 3 seats. Even the leader of the party lost his seat

This shows a clear decline in popularity for the party since it won only one election some 15 years ago. I would hope to see an analysis of this by the media in Dominica. But then again the media in Dominica only report news, they don’t do any analysis of anything. Sad.

When the Prime Minister anounced the date for the bi-elections, the UWP followed, so the fundamental fact is, Prime Minister SKERRIT is leading the country at this time, and we have a third in opposition in parliament, a good balance don’t u think? I am sure that the next time, the prime minister addresses the nation, he will demonstrate the opulence on a new way forward.

Our Democratic system is the looser in the recent bi-election. Two bi-elections, a grand total of over 5183 registered voters, and only roughly 38% voted. Our leaders should step back and ask themselves some serious questions; each one of you, are responsible for the state of our political climate today.

Our Leaders should be focussing on how to get the people engage in the process, it is sad; when all you hear from our leaders is personal attacks. Where is the leadership that is needed to bring all hands on deck to take this country forward.? I if these guys are the best of what Dominica has to offer, then we are not going no where.

It is sooooooo obvious that UWP took that little byelection , bi-election, buyelection , call it whatever election so seriously!!!!

Those people go house to house we!!!

To prevent Skerrit and the Labor Party from taking d lead in the campaign they start to send mix signals: They filing injunction in court to prevent d bybyelction . They want d court to tell dem how d speaker get d authority to make their seats vacant. Then they turn and say during their preliminary court case that Skerrit doh learning and cannot stop himself from bribing people (their heart was starting to beat out of sync and that is when party members from all other constituencies converge on Salisbury and Marigot). And dat is true!!!

Those people start to look up all man name in directory from those two constituencies and start calling to make appointment to visit dem people – people early morning and late night phone call. Ehlas !! People have to go work to pay their bills and need all their sleep!!!!!

D light bill and phone bill of d office on Cork Street even higher than d general election campaign of last December. Budget for toilet paper bust, budget for paracitamol bust, budget for red bull drinks bust, budget for gas bust , money for legal fees get diverted into campaign and plan ah foot to hold radiothon to clear negative variance for d by-election campaign budget.

When king jahjah see d $25,000.00sss finish and July did not reach yet he come up with desperate strategy and that is where Skerrit win him – we will go back to parliament we and we will take our seats …..yes we!!! And that victory BIGGER than getting back d two seats.

Skerrit Administration gets recognized by all you!!!! All you political necks were on d rope and all u cave in!!! Who’s your Daddy now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now d results come out in their favor , papa people voice get back big and strong and dem man start to beat their chest as if it was chack they did had to look powerful. Drinks start to flow (never mind it doh pay for as yet as budget already bust but pretense must to keep up as if things are good) and this morning about 5:30 a.m. dem two man dere realize that Prevost going and vote for himself to be leader of d opposition and so d plan hatch to work on Prevost to give up his personal ambition for d sake of d party!!!!

More vibes to come, till den Earl sen and say plenty howdee.

I would like to understand what the people are trying to prove? Those two seats was one the first time by the same party. Instead of 3 party this time around it was only two the opposition all voted for UWP. So what is the big deal I think it is only fair they regain those to seats but they have to stop playing games with the people. And people stop making feel as if they won something extra they won just what they one in December with the help this time around of the other opposition party. What you need to do is thank the other opposition party for their support. Get your heads out of the sky and come back down to earth and call a spade a spade. I want to congratulate the other opposition party for their support this time around.

Now is time to work for the country and stop the foolish games. Handle the people’s business

Were they not supposed to attend Parliament even from the 1st time around? Mr, Green stop playing blame game and you and your party members, Do what you all were elected that is to attend to the business of the Country and your constituents, Stop making yourselves as children and stop playing games, Educate your people and stop leading the people blindly so we won’t have chaos and conflict in the country, Accept the fact that you are in the minority now and let us work together to move this country to the next level. Skerrit really believed that he could have won these two seats? This is the climax of Skerrit’s ascension to power and the beginning of his end.
The United Workers Party mUst demand the removal of Alix Boyd Knight as Speaker of the House because with this … woman as speaker, there will be no harmony. The next move must be Alix must Go! If Skerrit continues with her then the boycott must continue in a tactical way, UWP comes in, makes their presentation and walk out. No time to listen to the insults of Alix and those other Laba…
How can Dominica produce so many brilliant sons and daughters and then the people can elect so many Jacka**** into parliament and cabinet? This is the worst set of parliamentarians the Caribbean has ever seen. Sam Martin, Ivor Stephenson, Ronald Toulon, Johnson Drigo, Collin McIntyre, Ashton Graneau, Petter St. Jean, the whole bunch is a group of incompetence, who should not lead a youth group.
The UWP boycott served its purpose, it brought the incompetence of the government into sharp focus and exposed Skerrit’s dictatorial tendencies and political ambitions for absolute power.
While Dominica sinks with increase in crime, drug trafficking, a sad minister of agriculture who should be fired, an airport that will never see night landing, chinese who are building roads without a single dominican employed, the list goes on ….. Skerrit was only interested in gaining more seats in parliament. Why?
The UWP boycott could have gone un-noticed. Historically parliament meets just about four times for the year, but Skerrit chose to convene parliament four times in three months, to achieve what?
The biggest loser in this bye-election is Roosevelt Skerrit. His Ego is bruised, the people of Marigot and Salisbury have taught him a lesson which he will never forget.
I would like to see UWP continue the boycott for another three sessions of parliament and challenge Skerrit to call another bye-election, but for the respect of the people of Marigot and Salisbury, I will advise otherwise. But Alix Boyd Knight MUST GO!!!
